  1. I don’t understand why anyone would use Wise to hold currency. Why not just leave it in a real account in USD/GBP/EUR or whatever?
  2. I don’t have a pink ID card. I submitted my passport and bank book.
  3. I went in to Bangkok Bank yesterday and and got the face “scan” done, as well as some more details on how it’s going to work. Apparently starting soon, anyone using the mobile banking app to transfer more than 50,000฿ at a time will have to be verified through the phone’s front facing camera. Amounts less than this are unaffected, as are ATM transfers. People can opt out but they won’t be able to transfer amounts larger than 50,000฿ using the mobile app. It was done quite quickly at a local branch (a different branch in a different province from where i opened the account), though I am skeptical that the low resolution webcam they used to “scan” my face will provide a clear enough image.
  4. the 4th and 5th were holidays and the 6th and 7th were the weekend
  5. The Bangkok Bank website says this is for Thais only. I’m worried that foreigners won’t be allowed to use the new system and will therefore be unable to make large transactions, by default. It may be another way that foreigners are walled off economically and legally in society.
  6. often they’re working alongside teachers who are actually being paid to work. So the agency is being paid by the the “volunteer” AND the school, keeping their entire salary!
  7. To avoid the hassle of changing large notes, I take cash out 400 baht at a time. That way it has to give me hundred baht notes. So If i take out 2000 baht, that’s five withdrawals right there.
  8. I don’t know if there is a limit but I’ve used it probably 60 times in a month and never been charged anything.
  9. Thank you. I emailed that email address and they activated roaming.
  10. I need to receive an OTP (one time password) from Bangkok Bank but I am currently outside Thailand. How can I receive the OTP or enable roaming at least? I can’t login to the AIS app because it requires, guess what, an OTP.
  11. Typically commercially produced beer in most countries in Europe for example is just pasteurized and doesn’t have other preservatives. It’s commonly said however that Thai beer has preservatives in it to keep it from spoiling when left in the heat and sun. It’s also said that this is the origin of the bad hangovers from Thai beer as well as the odd flavor, even for “international” brand like Heineken. There’s an obvious difference between the taste of a Thai heineken and one from the Netherlands or anywhere else for that matter. Anyway…are there in fact preservatives in Thai beer that are uncommon in Europe? If you have not heard about the preservatives, that’s fine, but I’m interested in getting to the truth of the matter about whether they’re in there or not.
  12. There’s no way the fed can fix its mess without raising interest rates higher than inflation.
  13. All fools that thought the US Federal Reserve was done raising interest rates are now realizing that rates will be north of 7% in a year.
  14. Assuming someone already has a degree in their respective teaching subject (but not education), What is the cheapest, easiest, fastest course that satisfies the ministry of education and krusapa requirements for a full teacher’s license? I realize that may be three different answers, but I think you see what I am getting at here. I hope this won’t devolve into a discussion of the educational merits of such a certificate in general. I have had enough school. I just want the certificate with the least possible difficulty and expense. Thank you
  15. I am not aware of any US bank that will do an international ACH transfer. Only domestic ACH and wire transfers. Bangkok Bank will reject domestic ACH as per their new policies to comply with stupid new laws.
  16. Indeed. You don’t just “wear nice shoes” or “bring a Thai.” That doesn’t change the requirements. Also, if you have an account you expect to be unused for awhile, you can cancel the debit card so that there is no fee for the account. You still have to maintain a minimum balance for the account to not be considered inactive. I think that’s 3000 baht. But I think in principle if you have no card on the account and say a 4000 baht balance you can leave the account for 5 years and it should be okay.
  17. I would like to know of a single bank that does international ACH for retail customers.
  18. I like to stand at bars for my own reasons. Why do bar staff INSIST that I sit down? They will stand next to me telling me to sit down, over and over and over again. “You can sit down.” “I know.” ”Sit down.” What is the deal with this? I hate explaining it over and over again, I’m thinking of making up cards in Thai to hand to them so I don’t have to do that. Why do they lose their <deleted> if don’t sit down?
  19. I’ve been turned away from about 7 branches and told I cannot open an account there on a tourist visa, only a “one year visa.”
  20. Is there anyone on this forum under 70? Learn to use technology, without it you’re basically crippled.
