Think about this : Have you ever seen a cod swimming in the ocean, sporting a codpiece? Please don't continue to provoke me by pretending that you know not. (sorry for the emboldened text. Not of my doing) -

Do you believe in Magic and why
GammaGlobulin replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Sorry: There is no evidence that Festinger ever engaged in Magical Thinking. Indeed, he probably never did. Magical Thinking has nothing to do with this Topic. And, Festinger was, and is, one of the true GIANTS walking among us who shed light on human behavior. Sorry to you, Festinger. You are one of the few social scientists deserving of great respect. Festinger deserves a place on Hollywood Boulevard for so many valid reasons. -
Do you believe in Magic and why
GammaGlobulin replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I think this great video was, actually, somewhat of a parody of the original TM movement, many decades ago. Be this as it may, the topic at hand is about belief in magic in the broader sense. Just as an example, Steve Jobs, so the story goes, believed that fruit, and not necessarily green apples, might cure pancreatic cancer. Magical thinking is all around us. Sometimes, people feel the need to believe. But, blind faith is always a killer. We humans tend to always see reality as we need it to be. Even Leon Festinger was subject to bias and magical thinking. Probably, he was not unaware of this. What about you? -

I meant TM levitation. Everybody knows this. -

Levitation, by age 90, must feel like a miracle. Wait for it. -
Dear Friends, How superstitious are you? Do you walk on cracks in the pavement, for example? Or, dare you not do so? Are you a scientist, one who demands proof? Are you a skeptic? Or, are you like many of us, those who believe in levitation through the power of TM? And what about other magical beliefs you may be unconsciously guided by throughout your day? Do you understand bias? Surely, you must believe in something which cannot be proven! Most of us do. What do you think about your magical beliefs? Some believe in levitation, for example. What about you? Can you say, for sure, that you are immune to magical thinking? This is the question of this topic. Some people can levitate. What about you? After all, it's Sunday. Sundays are best for levitation. All things under heaven are possible. One only requires a bit of faith.

Intelligent conversation is really nothing that you might want, if you want a more harmonious and long-lasting male-female relationship. If you want to find a girl who will not bore you, then you might try visiting a large factory. When I was young, I often visited factories in order to check product that I was shipping, abroad. Some of you might not know, but when you visit an Asian factory you will see hundreds of young women bent over their workstations. And, these women often seem to blush if you stop and inspect their work. Actually, being an exporter and a buyer provides one with a bit of power, anytime one might visit a factory. Hundreds of girls bent over their machines, daring not even to make eye contact. So, what I used to do was to prepare about 10 short notes on slips of paper. And then, while walking down the factory production line, presumably for the purpose of inspection, I would inconspicuously drop one of these notes, anytime I came across an attractive factory worker. The odds were good. If I dropped 10 slips of paper with my telephone number on ten workstations in the factory, I would often receive at least one callback. In my opinion, both factory girls and farm girls are the very best. Not only are they more intelligent and hard working, but also they prove to be kinder, as well. Why do you think Jagger sang about factory girls, so many years ago? He knew that factory girls are special. Not all factory girls are the same. Therefore, the more slips of paper you drop, the more likely it might be that you will find the love of your life. She might not be educated. She might not know the name Winston Churchill, in English. But, if you treat her well, then she will love you forever. Most factory girls are just waiting to be rescued from their factory machines. She will love you, forever, and treat you like Prince Charming, if you don't mind the stains all down her dress. Anyway, if you want to find a nice girl, this is one strategy you might consider. I love factory girls. They are the best. Factory girls are great. But, be kind to her, please.

How many copies of Madame Bovary have you found in a Thailand used book store?
-
This topic is near and dear to my heart. Almost 50 years ago, when I was living under martial law, one would search used book stores, hours on end, for any book that might strike one's fancy. Many of the books I found had been taken out of the garbage, or out of hotel rooms, or off ships docked at places like Keelung or Kaohsiung. You never knew what you might find. Just a box of chocolates. Most books were dirty and dusty, having been abused, yet still readable. I read a few titles written by obscure authors, and these were the best. At that time, the books were under a dollar. Still, if one were a fast reader, then one needed to haggle. If you read two books in a day, then the cost of reading mounted up. Used book shops did not look like what they do, today. There were no aisles to walk. Mostly, just stacks and stacks of dusty books. There was one book, out of the many, which I wish I still had; the title escapes me. This was a book dustier and dirtier than the others, yet memorable. This was a book about a sea captain who had destroyed his life through drink. Far better than the similar book, Under the Volcano. Such a fetching tale. Such a depressing tale, too. These days I do not read. I am too distracted by TikTok. I would dearly love to, once again, find this book about the doomed sea captain in some dusty used book store. Yet, nevermore, I fear. The days of reading books is over. Now, in truth, it's just Fahrenheit 451, all the way...
