Explaining Thailand to people that have never been

"Boiling 90% humidity (my least favourite thing), food poisoning, mozzies/dengue, soi dogs/rabies, rip off merchants everywhere (thai & foreign), no rules driving." I live on Samui right on a beach so the Sea-Breeze means the humidity doesn't bother me.....Also, I have aircon in my house and cars......If you are now living in the UK which is not entirely clear from your answer then how did you cope with the rediculous Heatwave in June this year???...Do you have Aircon in your house and car? "Food poisioning".... You can get anywhere in the World....Depends where and what you choose to eat as to your chances of getting it! "Mozzies"....No Mozzies in the UK then???....Try a so called "Summer Holiday" in Scotland and please report back on the insect bites you get up there if you manage to venture out on the rare occasions when it isn't P!ssing Down! "Dengue".....Had it once......Not pleasant, but less bothersome than Flu or Covid in my experience....Had Covid twice. "Rabies"....No reported rabies cases on Samui for years.....If you do get bitten then a simple course of injections is available very cheaply at the Government Hospital or at other Private Hospitals if you want to pay more...Same as everywhere in Thailand! "Rip Off Merchants everywhere".......Welcome to the world!.....So they don't have Scammers in the UK???...Also try getting an Electrician or Plumber out over there...Particularly over The Christmas Period! "No rules driving".........Prosecutions for drink driving have increased 16 per cent from 2020, rising to 33,099 cases in 2022 in the UK. "I've weighed these and the benefits up against UK winters and paying council tax and have decided to stay put for now. Each to their own though." "UK Winters"...No thanks!......."Council Tax."....No Council Tax here if you rent! I lived in the UK for 46 years...I have lived on Samui for the last 15 years. I know where I want to stay! Taken from my back garden...... Sunrise.... My place again...Afternoon in January UK Women... Thai Women... Enjoy your trip to Scotland or maybe Blackpool if you can afford the petrol, food and accomodation? -

And whilst we're on the subject do African Elephants have to pay 10 times the price??? No wonder you never see them in National Parks over here!

Depends on how much you like the "Extended Family".... Golden Retiever if you do....Pitbull if you don't! -

Like I said in a post the other day....I don't understand how Big C makes a profit? They always have a handful of customers, but huge stores and fully stocked........At least the ones I have been to.....Maybe a "Money Laundering" Oufit?? This is the Samui Outlet....At least they had the good sense to put their store upstairs and rent out the lower floor to the less intelligent "Entrepreneneurs"....

Kids will always want Sweets/Candy so they need to be educated to make the right choices. When I was a kid we always got TV Ads for Maltesers ......"With the Less Fattening Centre". Or why not try Polo Mints.....With the even less "Fattening Centre"? -

If you want to walk "Good" after your visit.... Best not to use the travelators...Well at DMK anyway! -
"Check your change. I did a bike trip there a few years back. Filled up the tank around 20 times. Got shortchanged about 17 of those 20. By the end of the trip, it was getting a bit tiring pointing out to them that I could count." Yeah!...That's what I figured might happen! Thanks for the warning! Pain in the DONG!

Thanks for the info. On this trip I will be enetering and leaving via HCMC. I will probably stay South and Central...I have heard it can get cold up North at that time of year. Maybe do Hanoi another time. As for Ha Long Bay it looks great for Honeymooners and I have seen loads of Youtube videos about the cruises, but a bit too touristy for me!

You can enter without Visa for 15 days as a tourist currently with UK passport.....After August 15th this will increase to 45 days.

Thank you for the Heads Up! I love Thailand, but just fancied a change!

Dear All, I am planning a trip to Viet Nam in November for 3-4 weeks starting with entry at HCMC (or Saigon as I believe the locals still call it). I will be travelling alone at first....Thai GF to join me later.... and would welcome any tips you have such as good travel locations, etc., The other thing I was wondering about is the Cash/Payment scenarios. I live in Thailand and have accounts with KTB and Bangkok Bank, but I only have Debit/ATM Cards from them (Never wanted credit cards here). I also have VISA Credit Cards from my UK Bank. I know that in VN they will take US Dollars more or less everywhere.... I don't want to get ripped off by not understanding that a burger can cost 1 Billion Viet Nam Dong with all the extra Zeros they use! I welcome your input. Please be gentle!
