I'm the latter, just high school, and still retired at 45. Was quite surprised at how many co-workers had college degrees, and didn't utilize them. Self employment & investing made early retirement possible, not my salaried job, 13 yrs @ NWA, now Delta airlines. All the folks I knew that were self employed, and better off financially, barely made it out of high school.

Yea, 10 more yrs will be a stretch for me. Having kids, new born, when older than 50-60 yrs old, and good chance you won't be around for them, and they'll need to deal with your death .. and lack of financial support, when needed. Irresponsible and an unnecessary situation for all involved.

If camera is a priority, then Google Pixel or one of the newer iPhone. A good camera is not inexpensive, and why phones are so expensive. I chose the POCO X3 NFC just for that reason. Uses Sony sensor, and has large, replaceable battery, not easy, but doable. Though depending on price, I'd just let them do it. Editing software, I have on computer. Doing anything, editing, on a phone is just annoying to me. Best if you simply learn how to take a good photo, then can clean up with the limited software on inexpensive phones, if needed. LightRoom has a free app for phone, and good in a pinch.

Same as most places in TH, play games & watch vids on their phone/device.

Keep all IDs the same. I had an issue changing my last name, Simply because one paperwork, separated my first name, from LA to a first & middle name, L A. Yea, that silly. Now have to go to embassy to get notarization, stating that both names are 'me', then get that translated, Then get new name change form, in Udon Thani, then back to PKK to change name. More than few thousand baht more, with a couple road trips, instead of <100 name change few.

oh well ... I like it. Need more news like this. Might act as a deterrent to dopers to stay away.

At Uni level, yea, on campus, kid was going through ฿35k a month, we were living on ฿30k a month ... ???? Krap Unis in Udon Thani, if we stayed there and she lived at home. No Uni at PKK, A. Muang. Pays for itself though, good job resulted from getting degree.

I consider that, kid @ 79 completely irresponsible. Kids need more than financial stability, and almost guaranteed the kid will feel the loss of his father at a very young age. Or watch his mental state deteriorate even more than it already is ????

My dog fills the void of daughter, since not living nearby, PKK vs BKK. Got to have someone/thing to talk to and make you laugh. Heading to BKK next week, daughter having free time. Try to squeeze in a visit monthly. Chit chattin' on FB is fine, but not the same, like having dinner or lounging around, watching a movie together.

Don't know about filling a void, how about just doing something good, if financially and mentally able to. Retired, so had the time and the money. After I threw the kid's (2yr old), mother out, I kept the kid. Mother never came back for her, and MIA all the time. Either keep the kid to fill that void ???? ... Or get a dog, and since the kid was already house broken, seemed like a no brainer ???? While I played single parent, grandpa/ma would take for the weekend, so I could get my freak on, not knowing they were mentally abusing her, and for some reason, enjoy telling her "nobody loves you" until she literally cried. No wonder she cut all ties with them, and adopted us last year. Anyway, after I stopped letting them watch her, she still would cry herself to sleep, since nobody 'loved her'. Of course I did, told her so, and told her, I always will and would always be there for her. Damn ... how do you break that promise to a wee one. 22yrs later, Uni grad, and definitely the best thing that ever happen, or I ever stuck with. Anyone that is that intelligent, and can make me laugh that much ... ... I'm keeping ???? Never wanted kids, and definitely had no plans on having one, prior to or after retiring at 45 yrs old. Now 68 and wouldn't change a thing. Am glad I never had one before, as selfishly enjoyed my single, irresponsible, extra money in the pocket life, without kids. Never had the maturity, time or money to raise a kid properly in the USA IMHO, or would consider any women I knew, mother material. Inconvenient disaster waiting to happen, so best avoided.

Not sure how I could love my daughter anymore, simply because she has my DNA. Aside from being there for the birth, surely an amazing experience, but not seeing how the rest would mean more or less, birth vs not. Did you adopt also, to come up with that analysis ?

Opposite of OP, and my immigration experiences have been at Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Hua Hin, for marriage, retirement, Thai national support visa extensions. But I do know ahead of time, what they want & show up with everything+ what they ask for. After the first time, I even make a point to put them in the order I see them assemble. All copies/signed before handing over, with originals handy if asked for. I find the legal paperwork part of staying in TH quite easy and inexpensive, though nothing to compare it to. Have never been asked for a 'tip', during the visa extension process from any officer. Pay with exact payment, which gives them small bank notes for those that don't. It's TH, and I don't expect everyone to speak fluent American, as I certainly don't speak fluent Thai of even close to it. I've enjoyed the ease of processing with all gov't offices;, land / auto transfers, DL by simply knowing what they want & providing it. Did the OP seriously state: "at the last counter, they asked, in THAI ONLY, for this residence paper... never heard of it" Does explain a lot, and IOs have my sympathies.

I always found the place around the ring rd, and other neighborhoods better for relaxing, munching, music, sipping socializing. Only went night market in late afternoon, very early evening, to beat the crowd & get easy parking spot.

Correct you are, brain freeze. Best music in town though, and I used to walk over from Preecha Market as my preferred munching & sipping area. Used to be able to cut through BKK H. parking area for a <500 meter stroll. Been more than a few years since party mode. Was at Preecha last year. edit:
