Long stayers probably spend more in the long run and are much more stable spenders because they are set up for the long haul. Many policies here lack a long term perspective. So, a flush tourist may seem to contribute more if you have a short sighted view, but not a long term view. Lots of things here are like that if you look closely. To give a few examples. Shoddy construction that's done quickly, but does not last. Superficial relationships. Kickbacks that make a problem worse. Many others... Now, this behavior stems from a lack of something. It's a survival instinct in societies as well as individuals. Grabbing (snatching) something immediately because you fear it disappearing, even if it means you will have less in the long run. -
Thai-ed up: British man’s terrifying prison ordeal in Thailand
JimTripper replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Could have to do with what others said rather then an outright crime. 'Entangled' means he was associating with the wrong people and got mixed up in things. That could mean being around people who were doing illegal things, being in the same places as them, being associated with them, being in a car that was pulled over where illegal stuff was found, etc... -

Are there designated seats? Most transit here have them, especially at an airport. If not posted, it's commonly understood people in need get the seats by the door. If nobody outright moves you just linger by the seat and someone gets the message pretty quickly. If you have a cane able-bodied people would move right away.

People that work teaching jobs here are usually skint. Those jobs don't pay much and for most people it's not worth it as an enjoyable occupation. They were probably coming to your place for the free food. I had a soiree in Chiang Mai and that happened. People showed up for beer, song and music then just left at the end of the night. Nobody offered to chip in. Not surprising, people don't typically offer unless you ask with the invite. They just assume you are wealthy enough to cover it if you don't say anything.

I don't notice much except when I was packed in close with them in Pattaya. Undesirables were kind of unavoidable because it's a much smaller city and not as many people, so I would get approached or come into contact with them and kind of be "stuck" there in a strange way in that situation. In other cities, there's much more "space" so I don't notice their problems. Bangkok is fine, I just don't engage people who I'm not interested in knowing and they get lost in the crowd. I just step away and they are gone. As to why they are here, I stopped caring. Not my problem. My old theory years ago was it was people who were running from something in their home countries. In other words, if someone was very successful in their native country they would not move away. No need too, since everything you desire is available no matter where you are if you can afford it, with just some small exceptions. I include myself in this category, unfortunately. Another theory I used to entertain was that the undesirable behavior was enabled by the new culture. People who were morally restrained in their prior country came into a Buddhist country where police enforcement of conduct and restraints on behavior were not as enforced or expected (or at least not in a way a newcomer would understand). Over time, these individuals develop a lack of boundries. For example, ongoing alcoholism or sexual behavior (like the utilization of prostitutes) that society just ignores and nobody says it's not acceptable. It just gets worse with time. After many years some people can't reintegrate back into their countries or families because the moral behavior that was there before has broken down. Others have a strength of character that ensbles them to maintain who they were back in their native countries. They may maintain their original religion, values, dress code, etc. They don't "go native". This was an issue with early explorers and colonization. There were always a few who lost themselves in the new culture, while others maintained who they were. It's hard to say why some do and others change.

Well, you would need to go through the trouble of registering a shell business and get a business license (if you don't already have one, or a legit one). With that comes tax implications in your home country, depending on where it's filed. For example, possibly having to file quarterly or semi-annualy even if the business makes no money depending on where it's based. In many areas the license is not free. That adds to costs. Also, you would need to setup a virtual office for mail and as a business address in that juristiction. Possible, but costs can add up. -

Notification of residence for foreigner
JimTripper replied to steph83's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I had the new TM30 for a Bangkok address. They wanted an in person visit to CW for the first 90 day report after I re-entered the country. Or, so the message online stated. Maybe they have been tossing out your mail in reports and you owe a fine. Sorry, man. -

My recent experience was with CW. The address report attempt online was in Bangkok. They wanted me to report in person for the 90 day report the first time after a new entry. Are you getting a receipt back when you do it by mail? If not, you may be fined. -

You will be reporting in person for the TM47 the initial time if you left the country. It gets rejected online. They will probably want a new TM30 as well if you are in Jomtien. (not certain if Bangkok requests a new TM30 or not, but they want the in person report). That's exactly what happened to me. I had the TM47 for Bangkok also and a new TM30. Still had the request for in person reporting given when I tried the TM47 online. -

One wonders why that's the case. Was it meant to shake up & confuse like so many other immigration matters? -

No set age, but when incontinence sets in it typically reduces your ability to do long trips. You always need to be near a bathroom that's immediately available. Add in mobility issues getting to the bathroom quickly and staying home becomes a more comfortable option. That's when you know you can't travel well anymore and do long flights, bus/train trips, etc. It starts with frequent urination, not being able to 'hold it' etc and gradually gets worse. When you start getting the bodily function issues that's the time you need to find a place to settle down and not be on the road all the time.
