Sounds fake to me. I worked with a Vietnamese "boat person " who ended up in a camp in Thailand. He had no love for the Thais. He said that Thais robbed them at sea and were brutal in the camp. He and the other Vietnamese former refugees warned me that Thais don't like foreigners at all, and implored me to be very careful here.

In my youth I worked in a restaurant that served fish and chips. The challenge with other white fish was with how well they withstood being battered and deep fried. Some fish went to mush and became inedible. Cod worked well, halibut very well, snapper less so. The other fish that are sold today were bycatch back then. That was 40 years ago. Today you'd have to be on crack to ruin a piece of halibut, so I'm very distrustful of people who are selling it for less than twice the price of the other fish.

I have no doubt that the proprietor acts in good faith and purchases it as such. The people farther removed from the end buyer have a lot to gain and zero consequences if the wrong fish ends up in the right box. Kind of like Subway with their "chicken " sandwich that turned out to be mostly something else. It doesn't make sense to have a ship catch cold water fish half a world away, process + freeze the fish, and ship it thousands of miles to be thawed out, battered and deep fried when white fish can be obtained locally at a fraction of the cost.

I'm not familiar with the establishment in this thread, but that assumption is incorrect more often than not. W5 (Canadian investigative journalists) tested white fish being sold in Canadian stores and found that it was misidentified almost 70 percent of the time. Still, 250 baht seems fair for decent quality deep fried fish - if they change the fat in the fryers regularly and give a decent portion of fish along with the batter.

Thanks for pointing this out. I've been craving mushy peas of late and didn't know where to find them. I can do without the deep fried mystery fish, and chips, whilst no longer cheap, can be found anywhere.

The interesting part is that if all of the middle aged white men called in sick for a week society would collapse. I'm not seeing a lot of competence from the youth and import sectors of the workforce these days. Though I've known plenty of competent white women who are highly conscientious in their work, there aren't enough to keep the lights on or maintain infrastructure.

A few years back I was in a tiny gogo bar on one of the Soi 13s. I was the only customer and in walked a couple from the UK, probably in their 50s. The woman was all over one of the young dancers, really playing it up but it was easy to see that her heart wasn't in it. Her husband looked disgusted with her, like he would rather be in one of Pinochet's dungeons getting electric shocks to his balls than be seen with his wife kind of looks. I got it, she was a gross pig. The woman got her fill of groping the dancer and dragged her husband off to God knows where.
