Utter carp, 898 mill! "The cost of detaining and accommodating people under the UK government’s controversial plans to tackle Channel crossings could amount to more than £9bn in the first three years". That is only detention and accomodation cost over three years, it doesn't include the cost we paid to France to police the coastal towns to prevent crossings, UK legal defense costs, social security costs, repatriation costs etc etc etc. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/22/channel-crossings-scheme-costs-could-top-9bn-in-three-years

BOT is buy baht again.
nigelforbes replied to Adumbration's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Unless I have misunderstood this post, it seems very silly. There is no evidence whatsoever that Thailand has house price bubbles, except in a few very popular locations, why would they, it's a closed market. There is also no evidence that banks here have failed or that their meagre social security scheme or pensions system is unaffordable. -
Ah....vital information emerges! If you had joined an umbrella company, in Hong Kong for example, you could live in Thailand, receive your divi. income in HK and there would be no UK connection. As it stands, that income has been paid into the UK company so you can't change that. Presumably you will not pay any Corp Tax also? I can't say for sure but I can't see HMRC letting you get away scot free on this, it just doesn't smell right.

Is your income from the UK Ltd company solely dividends? What is HMRC's view of you taking 100% of your income from YOUR limited company in this way....it used to be that this was not allowable and was seen as tax evasion. Presumably you intend to try and skirt the two points above, by becoming not UK resident for tax? That doesn't pass my sniff test, I doubt that it will pass the HMRC sniff test either.

You have a UK company that pays you dividends etc, that income arises in the UK hence you are taxable on that income in the UK, regardless of whether you are UK tax resident or not. Your personal allowance of GBP 1.5K will give you a tax free cushion. Not being UK tax resident means that you don't have to declare any income to HMRC that arises outside the UK, you still have to pay tax on any income that arises inside the UK. The Thailand tax part is a red herring, you don't earn income in Thailand although you do remit income from the UK to Thailand, in the year in which it was earned so technically you are taxable here on that income. Personally, I would ignore that aspect and just pay your UK tax in accordance with the above.

As I recall (and it has been a while) , you need to ensure that your phone number of record at HSBC, on your profile, is your Thai mobile number....mine is. -
Prime Minister faces questions about energy costs
nigelforbes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Once again, Thailand operates a fuel subsidy scheme, whereby high consumer prices are temporarily subsidised, until such time as energy costs fall when consumers overpay to replenish the fund. During covid it was a one way street and government had to borrow to fund the over extended fund. The idea of the fund is to smooth the peaks and valleys in the price of energy and fuel.....it does work quite well and is responsible for keeping inflation lower than if the scheme wasn't in operation. https://www.nationthailand.com/business/40016379 https://finance.yahoo.com/news/thailand-steps-inflation-fight-subsidies-081001693.html https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-approves-support-measures-cope-with-high-energy-prices-2022-03-22/ -

Many Asians don't view things as divided as you, have to say I don't and I don't think the Thai's do either. Trade is trade, relationships are relationships, trading with you doesn't mean I have to be in your gang. -

If you only stay for a short period of time, yes, it does revert to what it was when you arrived. But if you remain, and/or, if you inform them of a change in status (as I did), then no it doesn't revert. -

Flights from Malaysia would require little extra facilities yet it would still qualify as an international airport. Hat Yai airport in the South used to be very similar. -

People still have to drive from home to the airport and from the airport in HH to their hotel etc etc., door to door home wont be any less but the carbon foot print is massive and so much bigger. -
I have to say I am guilty of those things also but it's got nothing to do with an attempt to silence anyone, the other party os always free to continue without me.

Exploring the cost of living for retirees in Thailand
nigelforbes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I'm happy to share with everyone, feel free to PM if any point not covered. I bought a small retirement flat in the North, near the Lakes, back in 2018, until then I had been an overseas expat since 2004. The day the flat purchase closed I wrote to DWP and said, "I'm back for good, returning expat", uprate me". And they did. They would uprate me anyway because I was in the country but making it permanent is a second step. I transferred some money from my Thai bank to the UK, signed up for my utilities, registered for council tax and registered with a doctor. A week later a form arrived from the DWP trying to assess my lifestyle and established way of life. I wrote back and reported that everything necessary for my UK return was now in place and that I was no longer permanently connected to Thailand, I had even bought a one way plane ticket (important). I said I was married to a Thai but that I would be spending at last six months each year in the UK and that my wife would visit, her business workload permitting, she did indeed do that. After a month I heard nothing so I wrote to my MP and also copied the then Home Secretary and said I needed their support to uprate my status with DWP and set out all the things I've described above. A week later another letter arrived from an investigations unit which acknowledged my letters to the Secretary of State and my MP, it very quickly confirmed that my status had been changed and I was now regarded as a permanent UK resident. The key issues were, address, bank account, plane ticket, funds transfer and doctor. I spent the next three months painting my flat, and enjoying the Lakes in the summer, by September it was getting nippy so I employed an estate agent to let my flat and manage my tenant. I had changed my mind and decided I would take a "holiday" in Thailand. People are allowed to change their mind, had the weather stayed above 70n degrees I may not have. ???? Next year in the Spring I shall likely return, not just to uprate my pension but because after 4 years of covid I want to see the UK again. I'll probably stay for the summer, my wife will visit for part of that time. Somewhere in there I'll get uprated again and will go through the same process once again. The DWP does not make their decisions based solely on where you spend the number of days each year, it is based on your settled and usually lifestyle, which can change over time.- 74 replies

Tourist arrival ‘tax’ postponed, foreign arrivals drop
nigelforbes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Give us an example of what those first world plans and decisions might include or look like, things that would change the face of tourism in Thailand that they allegedly are not capable of doing themselves?.
