I think you have no choice ... updates protect your PC. Most of the time, the updates are done when the computer shuts down. So you can shut down before bed. I think on some rare occasions, the updates continue again when you start up? I am guessing you haven't done updates in a very long time. And in most cases in the future, the updates will be done when shutting down, not when starting up. Sorry, that's all I got.

my understanding is you need updates because it will protect you from vulnerabilities/attacks/viruses etc ... click "update and shutdown" before you go to sleep. should be ok to boot up next morning.
