100 year old Buddha statue unearthed from mango tree in Chon Buri
Foxx replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
If the Buddha figure was within the tree trunk, it wasn't "unearthed". Untrunked, or unboled possibly. Definitely not "unearthed". -
Motorway project linking Nonthaburi and Ayutthaya set for 2029
Foxx replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
This doesn't make sense. Bang Pa-in to Bang Bua Thong is 55 km on highways 32 and 9. How then, can one have a "34.1 kilometre motorway project, linking Bang Bua Thong in Nonthaburi and Bang Pa-in"? It sounds like this is, in fact, a partial renovation of bits of highway 9. Not a bad idea if it increases capacity. The road gets very congested at peak times. -
Trump aims to sue London firm over dossier alleging sexual perversions
Foxx replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I simply can't believe that Trump wrote that statement. Writing "the data are false" is a level of grammatical understanding that is way, way above Trump's third grade level of English. -
Almost total tosh. Following the sacking of Angkor the Siamese brought all the court dancers back with them. Thai dancing is a direct descendent of Khmer dancing. And the gestures do have meanings.

Computer glasses. Are they nonsense or do they work?
Foxx replied to JeffersLos's topic in IT and Computers
The Skeptoid podcast covered this subject and concluded "My favorite source for authoritative visual information is the website of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It's a source regular Skeptoid listeners might remember from episode #740 about blue-blocking glasses for people who work at computer screens, their data was very clear that all such products are completely worthless scams, and computer screens do not harm your eyes in any way unless you give yourself eye strain — which blue blocking glasses don't help with." https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4740 -
One of the fallacies here is that religion and ethnicity are closely associated. Hinduism is not the sole preserve of Indian people, and you can't conclude "there is a big genetic contribution from India". It's a bit like saying that Europeans are descended from Semitic peoples because they are Christian and Jesus was a Semite.

Long term (10 years) saving account.
Foxx replied to JeffersLos's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
(1) To get the best rates of interest you need to lock up the money for a number of years. You can't pay into an account monthly. (2) A compromise might be something like Krung Sri Bank's Mee Tae Dai account which has limited withdrawals, but allows frequent deposits and pays a higher rate of interest than a savings account. Other banks have similar products. (3) Why are you doing this? By keeping your money in cash you won't be getting enough interest to even cover the cost of inflation. -
Thai Police dismantles 4 Hubs of Escort Websites Serving Foreigners
Foxx replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
It's spelt "felons". -
Given the possibility of tax on money coming into Thailand, I'm contemplating moving a significant lump sum here before the end of the year. I was therefore wondering whether anyone had any experience to report of Krungsri Exclusive, and particularly whether they give you a credit card without having a locked-in deposit.

It's a bit more complex than there being a tax agreement in place. The UK Double Tax Agreement (DTA) does not cover state or pension income, so even now it would be possible for someone to pay tax on their pension both in the UK and Thailand with no relief. Of course, the UK DTA does cover government pensions - pensions paid to former civil servants and the like. Funny that the civil servants cover themselves, but are perfectly happy to screw the little people.

Are you sure about that? The email says "However, you will need to register again at our new website."

Samitivej Sukhumwit and Samitivej Sri Nakarin both have laser removal of warts. However, you'll need to be insistent. Doctors at both hospitals are much keener on liquid nitrogen. And if you email them asking about laser treatment, the reply will be (or at least was in my case) "don't have - we use freezing".

Each font file contains a limited range of characters. If it doesn't contain the character you want to display, it'll substitute an alternative of its own choice. You need to (a) install a Thai font file, and (b) select that font for the Thai text after it's pasted. If you go here you can pick your favorite font and download it to install on your device: https://fonts.google.com/?preview.text=สวัสดี&preview.text_type=custom&subset=thai¬o.script=Thai

Can't be that because you're not allowed to spend the money. More like a scheme to prop up Thai banks, or a scheme based upon a general loathing of foreigners. If they were concerned about foreigners having sufficient wealth to sustain themselves here they'd look at the person's global investments. I particularly loathe the 800K in the bank because it's money wasting away. It doesn't even come close to matching inflation, let alone making the sort of gains I could get through stock market investments.

Not Isaan food. It's Northern Thai.

Because they understand exchange rates change. The GBP interest rate may be higher, but that suggests that the value of Sterling is likely to fall relative to the baht. You may get a few more coins in interest in Sterling, but against the baht you'll probably lose capital value. Keeping surplus cash in baht also means that (assuming future expenditure is going to be in baht), there is no exchange rate risk. And given that exchange rates frequently swing by 30% in a year, one's avoiding the risk of losing a substantial part of one's wealth. Of course, if it's only interest rate you care about, why not invest in Zimbabwe with a deposit interest rate of 110%, or Argentina at 74%? Makes Santander's 5.2% seem pathetic.
