Why is it banned? Cuz the govt said so. ☺️ Why does the government ban it on such days? I have no idea and personally I don't really care but I assume that it is some kind of compromise between differing Thai thoughts on alcohol consumption and Buddhism: Thai Buddhists that say Buddhists shouldn't drink alcohol at all, Thai Buddhists who say Buddhists shouldn't drink alcohol on Buddhist holy days (wan pra / วันพระ), and those Thais who want to drink every day. The government position seems to be to impose quite a mild inconvenience and only ban the selling (but not consumption) of alcohol on 4 of the most important Buddhist special days: Makha Bucha, Wisaka Bucha, Kao Pansa and Asala Bucha.

We are not banned from drinking alcohol, only from buying it on Monday. As others have suggested, buy some before Monday and thank Webfact for warning us in advance so we can navigate this minor inconvenience without too much, err, inconvenience. ☺️

And interestingly, if you watch the video in this BBC report, as the reporter is making her report from the exact same location as the woman was killed, a cyclist whizzes past her in the opposite direction, and he is travelling quite fast, certainly faster than the old woman who was killed. Skip to 30s into the video. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-64824436

Is it okay not to wear underwear for a man?
asf6 replied to topswijaya's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I prefer to wear underwear because it feels more comfortable that way. My nuts feel sweatier when I don't wear them. They probably aren't sweatier but they stick to the inside of my leg and it it feels sweatier. But do as you please. I haven't been approached by an underwear checker for a number of years now so you might be as lucky as me. But be careful when you wear shorts. Sitting in public underwear-free with your legs open might cause some backlash. I mean, you wouldn't want to be the focus of attention of irate Thai netizens in a social network posting frenzy. -
Well done, Goat. Very diplomatically put. I'm sure you'll be the first non-family member invited to the wedding. ????

The cost of getting your ears cleaned out depends entirely on where you get it done. I've had it done 3 times in Thailand. The first time (very many years ago) it was very cheap (50B?) but they only used a metal thing to scrape out some wax. The second time it was about 150B at a small private hospital. The doc used water to try to blast the wax out and suction to try to suck it out. The last time was last year at a private ENT clinic. It was the most expensive. I went twice and paid 500B per visit for each consultation (that was standard for all patients) and about 100B for some ear drops to put in my ear for a week between visits. That clinic used suction to suck out the wax and a metal scrape tool to try to loosen the wax from the ear.

On Valentine's day, I told my wife that I wanted to go out for a romantic meal with the most caring and lovable person I'd ever met, but she said no. She said I had to go out with her instead.

^^ Yes, Indian Roller. I see them often. Interesting birds. Here's one taking a rest and admiring the view.

^ There may have been conditions to their residency, agreed by the late monarch. I'm sure the press will find out in the fullness of time.

I didn't imply that, no. I just read on the BBC that Frogmore Cottage was a gift to Harry and Meghan from the late Queen and I initially read into that they might have owned the property, but it appears not. I suppose all those in the royal family involved in past and present discussions about the property actually know what the intricacies of the legalities and technicalities of ownership and residence of the property are.

The "random title" idea was just a suggestion, not one I expected anyone to take seriously. ???? The Prime Minister being head of state would be fine by me.
-
I just edited my post above, Ozimoron, to add that the property is owned by the Crown Estate.
-
It will be interesting to see how this "eviction" plays out. According to the BBC, Frogmore Cottage was a gift to Harry and Meghan from Queen Elizabeth II. Perhaps they omitted to change the title deeds over to the Sussexes and the property has now been legally passed on to Charles! Edit: The property is owned by the Crown Estate.

No "President" would be my choice. Keep the Prime Minister. But perhaps the head of state role could be given a random title and chosen by lottery every 4 or 5 years.

In my experience, the restaurant bill goes to the one who reaches for it. In my family, sometimes it is me, sometimes it's my wife, and sometimes it's an in-law. But if there is a Mr, Ms or Mrs Big in our company, they will usually pay it. Occasionally, if there are lots of us eating and the bill is quite large, several of us will contribute to paying the bill.

Why would there need to be a replacement for it? Dissolve the monarchy, make a few adjustments, tweak a few laws and carry on much as before.

Which compares favourably to the general population in the US and is about the same as the general population of the UK.

I think that's probably right for many cases. Some foreigners look and act like newbies here, so why would the Thai person try to speak Thai to someone who can't speak Thai when a native Thai speaker is standing next to them? Especially so if the Thai person can't speak English /French /German /Spanish/ Greek/ whatever foreign language. Not so sure about handing the money back though, unless their Thai wife is sitting or standing closer to the cashier or waitress. I've never encountered that myself. I must be one of the lucky ones.

Hi SenorTashi, I'm not sure I understand all of your post correctly. Your wife's brother in law had just paid for a meal but then: (a) Did she tell her BIL that you should have paid for the meal because you are a farang? Or (b) Did she tell you that you should have paid for the meal because you are a farang? If (a), did she use the word farang instead of your name?
