Thats fine, I take the position in life that preparation is the key. It cost me nothing and took up no space to take my old passport along to avoid any potential hassles or questions from a stressed or ignorant or confused or racist IOs at the border. I offered my suggestion as a help to the OP or anyone else in the same situation. People can do as they chose. My experience has been over the years that it avoids hassle, as about 17 years ago, I was also ASKED if I had my old passport with me (and I did) at Swampy. They didnt look at it though.

Well the last time I switched US passports I was asked for the old one at Thai immigration. I believe it was because my new passport was clean except for a Extension of stay in Cambodia, and showed no ins and outs. Whatever, they took both passports, typed for a while, stamped my new one in and gave them back. It costs nothing to carry the old one one more time.
