  2. In an early morning incident on October 13, a passenger van collided with the rear of an 18-wheeler truck on the Mittraphap-Khon Kaen road, heading out of Nakhon Ratchasima towards Khon Kaen. The incident occurred in front of a convenience store in Ban Bing, Non Sung District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Upon arrival at the scene, rescue teams from Hook 31 Nakhon Ratchasima, Non Sung Station, discovered the passenger van, registered in Ubon Ratchathani, with its front completely wrecked and wedged against the back of the truck, which is registered in Udon Thani. There were 10 people in the van and several passengers had already managed to exit the van with multiple visible injuries, prompting the rescue team to provide first aid. One passenger remained trapped in the front passenger seat. Rescue workers quickly deployed hydraulic cutters to remove the van door and successfully freed the individual, who was still conscious. The injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Preliminary reports from the rescue team indicated that none of the six injured passengers sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities suspect that the van driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash into the truck, which was traveling normally on the road. Police are continuing to investigate the incident by interviewing the passengers and the van driver to determine the exact cause of the crash. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-14

  4. More than 200 vehicles were damaged after the Trang Municipality resurfaced a road with asphalt without putting up any warning signs. Many affected motorists have filed complaints, prompting the municipality to finally install warning signs and offer compensation. The incident occurred during a road improvement project conducted by Trang Municipality on the parallel railway road (South). The contractor was awarded a budget of 6,030,000 baht for the project. On October 12, starting around 15:00, the contractor began applying asphalt over the entire road surface. However, the resurfacing process was carried out without closing the road to traffic or providing any warning signs. Drivers, unaware of the fresh asphalt, continued using the road, which led to the asphalt sticking to the tyres of both cars and motorcycles. The sticky asphalt was flung up onto the undercarriage, wheel arches, and paintwork of the vehicles, causing damage to nearly 200 cars. Many of the affected drivers have since filed police reports at Trang City Police Station, as previously reported in the news. In response to the incident, the Facebook page PR Nakorntrang News posted a message from Dr. Sanya Sriwichien, Mayor of Trang, who ordered immediate corrective action and compensation for those affected. He confirmed that instructions were given to the contractor to install “Road Closed, No Entry” signs at three key entrances: Kantang Road, Khlong Nam Jed Road, and Wang Tor Road. The municipality has also pledged to coordinate with the contractor to ensure that any claims for damages will be compensated. Affected individuals are encouraged to contact the Trang Municipal Public Works Office for assistance. The mayor emphasised that contractors have been strictly instructed to install clear warning signs and lights to prevent similar incidents in the future. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. -- 2024-10-14

  13. The Commander of the Chonburi Provincial Police, Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatchakiat Jindakornsanoong, has signed the order on October 12, to transfer Police Sub-Inspector Aisoon Dathong, Deputy Investigator of Najomtien Police Station, to Chonburi Provincial Police headquarters amid allegations of orchestrating a major theft. The move follows the arrest of four suspects in a theft case involving the stealing of heavy machinery worth nearly 10 million baht. The case, which surfaced on October 12, 2024, involves a group accused of stealing large industrial equipment, including a transformer and a vibrating roller, from a scrap yard in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi. The arrested suspects reportedly implicated Pol. Sub-Inspector Aisoon Dathong as the mastermind behind the operation. Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatchakiat has initiated a formal investigation to determine the officer’s involvement. If evidence of wrongdoing is found, he vowed to impose severe disciplinary measures. Criminal charges will be pursued if necessary, to set an example for other police officers who may engage in similar conduct. National Police Chief, Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet, has ordered further scrutiny into the case, instructing Pol. Lt. Gen. Somprasong Yentuam, Commander of Region 2 Police, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatchakiat to report on any disciplinary or criminal actions taken against the accused officer. A deadline of three days has been set for a detailed report. Investigations are ongoing, and additional legal action is expected as evidence continues to emerge. This case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting concerns about corruption and misconduct within the police force. 19. UPDATE Rescue Workers Shocked by Lightning Strike That Killed Goalkeeper on Field, Ball Boy Miraculously Unharmed Rescue worker Tussanah Suraphap, 42, from Ban Chang Phutthatham Foundation, shared his account of the tragic lightning strike that claimed the life of a goalkeeper during a football match. The incident occurred on October 12 at around 14:00 while a seven-a-side football game was being played amid heavy rain, which eased as the match neared its end, just before a corner kick was to be taken. Tussanah described how the rain had almost stopped when, suddenly, two bolts of lightning struck behind the goalposts. It was unclear whether the strikes hit the ground or a nearby tree, as the players and spectators were focused on the corner kick. No one was paying attention to the goalkeeper at that moment. Moments later, the goalkeeper for Pluak Daeng United collapsed unexpectedly. Though he wasn’t hit directly, he appeared to have been struck by the tail end of the lightning. The strike caused the goalkeeper to fall with symptoms resembling electrocution. Rescue workers immediately rushed to administer first aid and performed CPR from the football field to Ban Chang Hospital. Although the goalkeeper briefly regained consciousness and tried to speak, he quickly lost consciousness again and passed away at hospital. What made the incident even more baffling, Tussanah noted, was the presence of a ball boy standing close to the goalkeeper, behind the goal. Despite his proximity to the lightning strike, the boy was completely unharmed. -- 2024-10-13

  24. A 55-year-old Scottish tourist, Ms. Henderson, experienced a severe reaction after consuming an excessive amount of cannabis, leading to a public disturbance that required police intervention. The incident took place at a resort on Jomtien Beach Road in Chonburi on October 12, after hotel staff were unable to control the situation and called for assistance. At 12:40, Pol. Lt. Sontaya Khonsap, Deputy Inspector of Pattaya City Police Station, responded to the call. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Ms. Henderson in a state of extreme fear, crying and shaking inside her room, which was left in disarray. A jar of cannabis flowers, paraphernalia for smoking, and prescription medication were discovered in the room. Officers attempted to calm her down and escort her to the hotel reception area, but her behavior quickly escalated. According to a Danish man, who had been friends with Ms. Henderson for over 15 years, they had been in Pattaya for just two days to enjoy their retirement. The previous day, Ms. Henderson purchased cannabis to smoke, after which she began exhibiting unusual behaviour. She became paranoid, fearing that someone was out to harm her, and isolated herself in her room. Concerned for her safety, her friend alerted hotel staff, who then contacted the police for help. As officers attempted to escort Ms. Henderson to a police vehicle, she became increasingly agitated, fearing she would be harmed. She resisted their efforts, sticking her tongue out and making faces at the police and passersby. Police eventually managed to take her to a medical facility for treatment. It is suspected that her erratic behaviour was triggered by a combination of her pre-existing medical condition and an excessive amount of cannabis. Police are continuing to investigate the incident and ensure the well-being of the tourist. Picture courtesy of Sattahip News. -- 2024-10-13
