Road bicycles (for racing) normally have an open face helmet... It's part of the rules. BMX or MTB are generally full face helmets. And will give your face more protection. In NZ it's now mandatory to wear a helmet on bicycles. Growing up in my day it never was. Too many insurance claims and ACC (Accident Compensation Commission) - government payouts bought this about. Don't even think about getting on a motorbike without one. Cops will pull you over so quickly.

Rental companies (for scooters) are just after a quick buck. They don't give a damn about licences or insurance. You break their bike, they come after you. And you can guarantee the cost will be higher than actual. Until the RTP smack the rental companies for non compliance with big fines, nothing will change. Stupid young tourists that think they are 6ft tall and bullet proof will continue renting bikes thinking they can ride like Ivan Mauger. Lives will continue to be lost and if some are lucky, only injured/aimed. This guy was just unfortunate on a bicycle it seems. Thai roads are dangerous and you need to be prepared.

I've always had some form of insurance too... sometimes only 3rd party to cover me if I damage an expensive vehicle. Luckily I've never had to claim.

With all those facial and cranial injuries, I suspect he wasn't wearing a helmet let alone a quality one. Unfortunately if you come off, your head is always prone to serious damage when it contacts something. Luckily no one else was involved. If he survives it's gonna be a long road to recovery. Yes the Nazis used Zyklon B which has hydrogen cyanide as an ingredient. Also used in pest control. Nasty stuff Cyanide has a slight almond smell. I used to smell it in my neighbour's shed as he made up a cyanide paste to kill possums.

Back in the day when the fur trade was alive and kicking, cyanide was one way of 'trapping' oppossums in NZ. It was in a paste form and usually had a flour mixed with aniseed lure sprinkled on top. Very effective. Once the possum got a whiff of the cyanide, all over red rover. They would get no more than 10 feet and be dead. My friends dad use to have a block of bush that he use to spend a few months in each year. He helped his dad make up the paste but I'm sure he got a bit of poisoning himself. We were waiting for the school bus and he complained of a real strong headache. At one stage he sneezed and this really long blood clot came out of his nose. A few days later he was ok. Lucky lad.

If the police suspect the driver had been drinking... Then conduct the booze test to confirm. It's not rocket science! In NZ and probably a lot of other countries it is mandatory for a booze test when there is an 'accident' involving injury.
