Hong Kong policeman’s fatal fall from baht bus sparks safety outcry
Korat Kiwi replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
From the video it looks like the driver possibly wasn't aware that either the passenger wanted to disembark or simply fell off. The baht bus didn't stop to let him off, that's quite evident. -

Question on full faced helmets for women
Korat Kiwi replied to WingNut's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
LS2 make great helmets and have very good safety ratings. I've 3 of them back in NZ and currently have an old one here that's due for replacement. About the only brand that fitted my head comfortably... Maybe I've a strange shaped head! -
Methylated spirits absorbs or mixes with water... It can be used to 'extract' small amounts of water in a fuel tank. Otherwise as previously stated, if your machine can run on E10 fuel then a tank full of that can do the same job. Regarding plugs and batteries, I now always go the iridium type of plugs. Cleaner burning and virtually last a lifetime. I've been looking for Lithium iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries here without much success. Back in NZ I put LiFePO4 in all 3 bikes that I had. They have a way lower discharge rate compared to SLAB ones, heaps lighter, smaller and often more CCAs. Sure they are more expensive but I like the insurance gained by knowing when I hop on a bike, it will start anytime and every time. Generally they will last about 10x longer than sealed lead acid batteries. OK that's my 10 cents worth to the discussion...

Sky-high tourism boom: Thai-Chinese flights to double
Korat Kiwi replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
About 10 years ago in an area of Baan Tawai, Hang Dong, Chiang Mai there were thriving businesses of woodcraft. Many different types from wood carving to high quality cabinet makers. Life was good for these craftsmen, turnover and profits were on the up. The level of skill and imagination to what could be made from wood had no limit. Then the Chinese tourists turned up, by the bus load. They didn't buy much but took lots of photos. Roll on a few months and sales started to decline, why? Because the Chinese had gone back home and copied all those photos they took while on holiday. Factories were set up, prices were made to undercut those at Baan Tawai. Many businesses in Baan Tawai closed as they could not compete. The Chinese 'copies' although appearing similar were of poor quality. This is the way of China, and yet the current Thai Government cannot or refuse to see it. I pity the average Thai... life is going to become more challenging. -
In 30 years I've never had a problem. That all changed 2 days ago. I have a small amount in a NZ account ($3400). Monday morning I checked to see what the balance was... $1.31 WTF! Straight onto the banks website and urgent email sent to them. A lot of emails later and they rang me yesterday to go thru the normal security questions. There were 2 online transactions to a well known NZ appliance store. 1st transaction was $2750, apparently they tried a $3000 transaction but as there were insufficient funds it was denied. The other transaction for $1650 went through. The bank called me yesterday and have arranged for a new card and have put in a charge back onto the merchant shop. Today I got an email from the bank saying the charge back will take between 7-30 working days. But at least I will get my money back. I hope the shop chases up the a hole who placed the orders... Invite the police to attend as well. All in all it was quite a shock, but mastercard has in their T&C that if you can prove fraudulent transactions they guarantee 100% refund of your money. I'm using Wise card here and don't have a problem but will check out their virtual card.

Irish footballer fights for his life after bike crash in Thailand
Korat Kiwi replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Road bicycles (for racing) normally have an open face helmet... It's part of the rules. BMX or MTB are generally full face helmets. And will give your face more protection. In NZ it's now mandatory to wear a helmet on bicycles. Growing up in my day it never was. Too many insurance claims and ACC (Accident Compensation Commission) - government payouts bought this about. Don't even think about getting on a motorbike without one. Cops will pull you over so quickly. -

Rental companies (for scooters) are just after a quick buck. They don't give a damn about licences or insurance. You break their bike, they come after you. And you can guarantee the cost will be higher than actual. Until the RTP smack the rental companies for non compliance with big fines, nothing will change. Stupid young tourists that think they are 6ft tall and bullet proof will continue renting bikes thinking they can ride like Ivan Mauger. Lives will continue to be lost and if some are lucky, only injured/aimed. This guy was just unfortunate on a bicycle it seems. Thai roads are dangerous and you need to be prepared. -

I've always had some form of insurance too... sometimes only 3rd party to cover me if I damage an expensive vehicle. Luckily I've never had to claim.
