  1. I have a moveable dish, J-sat box and TOT broadband internet connection. I mostly watch the Multichoice bouquet (about 95% reliability - depends on the internet connection) and Australia Network. I have trouble with picture quality and reliability with Dream TV. Quite a few lesser known Thai channels available and some XXX sites. I got a local guy to install the dish and the controller box. You have to get in touch with the nerd side of your self to get it all working initially.

Can't say anymore here but PM me if you need more info.

  2. Beardog,

Just to sum up for your future reference before your mate Derek does drugs again and tells you porky pies about his water well:

    1. Although there are some artesian wells in Thailand, they are extremely rare (less than 0.1%). Most are sub-artesian however i.e. there is sufficient pressure for the water to rise in the well higher than the depth at which it is encountered but not to the surface.

    2. Anybody drilling a water well for less than 40,000 baht is not going to have the equipment or know-how to control a flow from a 35 metre well with 8 bar surface pressure. Slapout will confirm that the deeper the well, the easier it is to control.

    3. Chownah is spot on in that your mate can probably get all the water he needs with a conventional household pump. If he wants to control the pump he has, it is probably easiest done with pressure controlled electric switch the same as you will find on the household pumps. The regulating valve mentioned by Somtham is probably not the best. These have an inlet, outlet and return line. The obvious place to dump the return is back in the well which will eventually cause all kinds of crud to grow in the well. The pump will also keep running.

    4. Class 13.5 PVC pipe manufactured in Thailand has a 13.5 bar working pressure. If he is blowing up his plumbing, he is using lower grade pipe or has faulty connections.

    5. Thai power is 220V single phase and 380V three phase. Your pump will be on the same power as Derek's.

    6. Red Adair died in 2004. You can take him out of your address book.

I have attached a couple of crappy photos of artesian wells in Thailand to show they do exist. One shows a well being drilled and the other shows a well being flow tested. Hope all this helps.

  3. I was chit chatting with an old timer the other day, and caught a really weird (to me) idiom - "18 mongkot". I asked a friend what exactly it means, the best I could gather was something to the effect of if someone is 18 mongkot, they are all the way 100% bad to the bone. But another friend disputed this definition. So it doesnt make much sense at the moment. Any thoughts on the true meaning and implications, as well as etymology (mongkot has something to do with 18 parts of your spirit I think??) would be awesome. Thanks!

Oh yeah, the first time I repeated it to the friend I got it wrong and said "18 mongkut" i.e. 18 crowns. Not sure if that makes any difference to you guys, but keeps me humble :o

I'm disappointed you didn't get any responses as I would also like to know. I have heard the term used often, usually to describe an untrustworthy spiv or con man or a gangster without the honour sometimes attributed to such people. I have never heard a reliable description of the origin of the term though.

  4. Boksida:

Not Kipling. Actually Robert W Service (1874 - 1958); Known for his works in the Yukon in the gold rush period. He is the guy that collected his poems and, when he had enough for a book, paid a publisher $100 to print it.... (poemhunter.com)

My apologies, you are quite correct. Isn't he the same guy who did the one about The Shooting of Dan McGrew?

  5. I googled around and found this concerning the suction lift limit for shallow well jet pumps:

"Shallow well jet pump: The jet assembly is located on the suction side of the impeller. Water is supplied to the nozzle under pressure from the pump. As the drive water moves through the nozzle and venturi a partial vacuum is created drawing more water from the well up the suction pipe. A portion of the water is directed to the discharge outlet for the distribution system, the rest is recirculated to the ejector.

In driven wells (sand point wells) the check valve can be installed in-line near the well head or pump and the well casing can be used as the suction pipe.

The shallow well jet pump's suction lift limit is 25 feet at sea level. "

    I found that at:

    http://www.aquacosm.com/articles_detail.asp?ArticleID=14

This is consistent with my approximately 10 metre limit for suction lift as a theoretic limit....25 feet being about 7 1/2 metres and definitely less than the 10 metres I mentioned. It seems like the centrifugal pumps I have bought for my domestic water supply all seem to call out a max suction lift of 8 metres but I could be mistaken....if this is correct then this would put them roughly on a par with the shallow well jet pump installations for suction lift....I guess. I'm certainly willing to hear other information on this.

    Chownah

You are quite correct that the theoretical unassisted suction lift for any pump is 1 atmosphere (1 bar = 10 metres). This is not practically possible and is more likely to be closer to 6-8 metres. The jet gives some assistance to closer approach the theoretical possible. Even 2 metres at these depths is 20% improvement which is quite worthwhile. The other advantage is that it is easier to recover "prime" if the suction has drained.

The deepwell jet is more efficient but, in my opinion, not very practical in these days of cheaper submersibles. Running the eductor with two pipes down the well is a pain in the butt.

Oilfield jet pumps, where a couple of thousand psi pressure loss across the jet can be achieved, are impressive but are also losing out to submersibles because of the low efficiency.

  6. I read it and I think that they were vague in their description of what was actually being done. They said that if a jet pump venturi was placed at the inlet of a centrifugal suction pump that its suction lift would be increased.....they don't say, for instance if the jet is installed right next to the centrifugal pump which they are boosting or if the jet gets installed at the inlet of the suction pipe at the bottom of the well which is what I expect they are talking about. I think they are trying to say that water can be brought up from a deeper level with this arrangement but I'm not convinced that the way they describe it is entirely accurate as far as saying that the suction lift of the centrifugal pump is increased.

    Chownah

The only reason I know for using a jet pump is to increase suction lift. The textbook from which the attachment was scanned is kind of a Bible in my industry and you are the first person I have come across in 40 years who has the technical expertise to dispute the basics. Jet pumps have always behaved exactly as described in the book for me. The suction lift is increased by the amount of pressure reduction at the venturi less friction losses etc.

  7. One more note: A jet pump does not have appreciably more suction lift than a centrifugal pump...both are limited to being able to suck to the height equivalent to atmospheric pressure....the jet pump's big advantage is that when the venturi is place down the well it does not have to suck...it can push the water up and pushing the water up does not have the same atmospheric pressure limitation.

    Chownah

Apparently you were unable to download the attachment explaining how suction lift is increased. Would you like me to pm it to you?

  8. The information at Grundfos does however say that it is a centrifugal pump and not a jet pump.

    Thanks,

    Chownah

Every household jet pump I have seen has been centrifugal. The alternatives are progressive cavity or reciprocating and these are rare.

The difference between a jet pump and a centrifugal pump is that a centrifugal pump's action is to spin the water in a housing creating "cetrifugal force" which creates the pumping pressure....while a jet pump's action is to force a small stream of high pressure high velocity water from an orifice and into a venturi sort of a setup (I don't know if it is properly called a venturi or not) which converts the energy in the high velocity stream into a stream of lower velocity but greater volume. This is sort of a brief and sketchy explanation but I hope it is clear that I am trying to indicate that the pumping mechanism which pumps the usable water is quite different between these two types of pumps....a better explanation could be found on the internet I'm sure.

    chownah

A jet pump is a centrifugal pump with the device you mentioned to give greater suction lift. On a "shallow well jet", the venturi is on the surface and on a "deep well jet", down hole. The attached file may help.

  9. On the subject of making sure the pipes can handle it, is there rated information printed on the pipes themselves or how else is this determined, as I am determined to have a shower with far more velocity and force than what I have at present.

    Thanks,

    Dr. B

The blue PVC pipes made by Thai Pipe are marked Class 5, 8.5 an 13.5. The number refers to the rated working pressure in kg/sq.cm.

  10. A question:

I hold my permanent residence status since 2002. Now I might go back to Europe and work there, however my plan is to spent my "old days" in Thailand and for that reason I want to try to hold onto my PR. I could be working in Europe about 10 to 15 years before I return to Thailand permanently again :o .

Is it correct that when I make sure that before I leave Thailand I get my re-entry (endorsement) stamped in both the PR and my passport and then return to Thailand before this re-entry expires. Next to that I would have to do my local police station reporting every 5 years.

I think you are correct. I once spent a few days over 12 months on an overseas job and lost my Permanent Residence and had to go through the whole process again. As far as I know, you can only get a re-entry endorsement valid for a year so you will have to make a trip back before each expiry. If you pay in advance you can get your Alien Book updated every five years.

  11. hi, I'm german, since 18 years on a non-imm."M" visa as I'm female and married to a thaiman and heared about this ใบต่างด้าว but the local imm.officer couldn't give me any informations how this permit differs from the general permanent resident visa and what requirements are asked for. Anybody who's got it? Thanks!

It is issued at the same time as a permanent residency and has to be re-validated every 5 years at your local police station rather than the immigration department. It is generally called "Alien Book" and has a red cover.

  12. The information at Grundfos does however say that it is a centrifugal pump and not a jet pump.

    Thanks,

    Chownah

Every household jet pump I have seen has been centrifugal. The alternatives are progressive cavity or reciprocating and these are rare.

  13. O NO! Are you sure about Oliver? O no, what horrid horrid shame. I thought Horst was lovely, grumy and scrowly, but such a kind big bear, and now Oliver. So sad.

Ceremonies are at Wat Phra Singh. Prayers started at 7pm last night so will probably be the same for the next few days.

  14. More bad news. Have just heard from one of our sons in Australia that Oliver Fruchtenicht has been killed in a motorcycle incident in Chiang Mai. Oliver is the son of Horst Fruchtenicht (also mentioned in these pages) and Warunee and did his schooling at CMIS. He and his sister Melanie were, are close friends of our kids. A lot of you may remember Horst from the Gymkhana and around town. If anybody knows details of funeral arrangements could you please let me know as we live out of town now.

  15. Wheres the best place to get a tattoo in pattaya ?

Or is it safer to stick with a palour at home.

On Khoa San road, which has a lot of very crappy tattoo parlors, YMK half way down in a arcade on the left, is VERY good. I've bought 7 tatoo's there, all free hand jobs, for friends,

    Center Point Plaza, 02 629 1027

The best place is on your forehead and JimmieBlonde might give you a free hand job.
