  1. kat- "And by the way, I'm from a low-income background and have made poverty alleviation my life's work. I have plenty of warm relationships with poor stateless migrants and the average working Thai. Maybe they appreciate that I am real, and treat them as real people in return, with real interactions, and not as sacred, idealized, romantic concepts from colonial-era ideals of the poor noble savage."

Unless one is your waiter right?

  2. ummm yeah I do "get it"

The Democrats are a political party .... Amazingly enough all political parties have the goal to win. The Demos never have come right out and asked for intervention and a Royally sponsored PM to the best of my knowledge. <<bet they sure wouldn't mind getting one though!>>

The PAD is NOT a political party ... they are a coalition of groups that as a whole do not have political aspirations <other than to see a Government without Thaksin> and Have called for a royally sponsored PM.

    They are different animals.

as for Giles ... I don't know what axes he has to grind with whom ... nor does it matter to me :-) I don't get a vote anyways! But to insinuate that someone is "anti-thaksin" from that article you quoted is assinine. I don't see a point saying the guy proves that .... he is anti thaksin at all. He just says he doesn't approve oof the way the 2 DIFFERENT groups you talk about .

Using an insinuation that someone agrees with you from a quote that doesn't state that ..... sad

I could dig back and point out articles that have been posted by respected people in Thailand that say a Royally appointed PM would be a good move for Thailand's democracy ...

  3. got it .... even though Giles is making the same mistakes that many on this forum make .... making PAD and the Opposition parties out to be the same people.

then again some people think that everyone involved has an axe to grind ... so maybe that is it! not to mention that i missed the article quoting Giles as being anti-Thaksin.

  4. h,,, a bit of facts or speculation from the first page in the press SRJ

Pol Maj Gen Krissasda Phankhongchuen, deputy metropolitan police commissioner, said the man, who suffered severe injuries on his head, was barely alive when police arrived at the scene, which was on the opposite side of road from the Police Hospital.

He said police later arrested two garbage collectors and found an iron bar which one of them used to beat the man.

  5. My wife is a poor ignorant Isaan girl. Darned glad you said that Gary ... had anyone else pointed out the obvious, someone would have gotten in trouble!!! If you think for a minute that the village headman is going to tell her how to vote you BETTER think again. What I see is a bunch of ignorant farang know it alls interfering with the people who will eventually do the right thing. Exactly which "ignorant farang know it alls" <sic ... wow both ignorant AND know-it-alls> are interfering ... and interfering in what way?

The learned academics had a large input in writing the constitution. It came down to Let's vote! Now the vote doesn't please them so they want to revert to mob rule. What if Thaksin resigns tomorrow? Who is going to replace him? Doesn't really matter to PAD who replaces them. But imho just about anyone that's not gonna privatise the whole country to generate funds for populist spending ... but frankly it doesn't matter what I think ... I don't get to vote :-)

So gary ... what do you object to? People having an opinion that differs from yours?

  6. koh hong in the morning .. nice swimming .. great fish to snorkel with ....

skip the 4 island tour ... since you only go to 2 ... and on land at one (for lunch) (though that furthest out little island had great snorkelling

the other 2 islands .. koh gai (the chicken island with the funny rock face like a chicken head you just cruise by and the last one is a stop at Had raileh ...... a) not an island ... and :o you'll go there anyays

  7. tourists beware! Locals ... get used to the bacteria!

I've gotten the crud* about once every 90 days for the first year when I moved here and not since the 15 month mark ....

but the only time I have had full blown food poisoning I got it from KFC!

frankly the only thihng in this report that bothers me is the water ... they didn't stipulate "substandard" inwhat way!

  8. Air Asia has kiosks in many cities ... or you can get a TA to book it for you if you cannot use a creditcard online for some reason ....

there's a place at Saladaeng Station in BKK that does last minute bookings and can often get good rates

  9. :D JDIA: luvin ya giving 'em heaps..insightful.pithy,intelligent,informed,direct, and this litany of applause to an American Abroad...WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE YOU SIT AT MY TABLE!! :D Dukkha

:D Thanks .. appreciate the compliment .... the guys on the receiving end of my wit and pointed remarks sadly never rise to the challenge! :o

  10. Where are you getting these ideas from!!!! It is not just Thailand. It is normal for a foreigner not to be given bail as he has no ties to the region and is a higher risk to flee than a local.

Foreigners are a higher risk than locals. Where is the logic behind this? Why are foreigners higher risk than Thais'? Are Thais' better than Foreigners? Explain yourself?

Fancy walking around cities in the US at night...or is that TIT as well.

I have many times mate even the bad areas. Many Thais' would die to live in American. Did you forget that? I forgot you must be a retiree.

Yes foriegners are more of a flight risk than locals ..... and yes in most western countries you are more likely to be mugged than in Thailand .....(not counting thise 'fines' i keep paying right to the police)

  11. C'mon, get realistic. The problem is with jealous rivals. A couple of weeks ago I forecast a backlash against the malcontents and here it comes. I just hope no one lights the fuse to this powder keg. I really can't understand farangs getting excited and trying to interact. It is none of our business and we would be best served to keep a low profile and NOT run our mouths. I live up country and Thaksin's support is overwhelming. What are the malcontents planning to do after the new election? They have already told the country that they were going to take their ball and stay home. They don't want to play ball so they should stay home and not bother other people. Thaksin may not be the most moral politician but he is certainly the smartest.

Oh, and I think Siam Paragon might not be very popular place to protest. On the other hand, they promised to put more pressure on Thaksin and as with any protest some people will be inconvenienced. Wait until general strikes.

The root problem lies with Thaksin, not with PAD.

So true... here in America, we have people in America illegally forming govt. policy by demonstrating. For those that are citizens, we find it a bit offensive. They are chanting phrases such as "We are America, We built America" blah blah blah. It gets old, and tiresome. Keep your heads down folks, you don't want to become a target under mob mentality. At least that is my 2 cents.

Huh? when is protest NOT protected (and thus legal) by the US Constitution?

But then again this is Thailand and not the USA

  12. Hmmm the PAD again ... is not running for office. It is possible that some people involved with the PAD have other reasons behind their push to oust Thaksin. I for one wouldn't hazard to guess* what people's motives are other than what they state.

on a side note I was unaware of any protests the other day at Siam Paragon.
