  1. If you are concerned then perhaps you should hedge your bets, perhaps make a retirement visa your Plan A, just decide what your Plan B is. FWIW my plan A is continued retirement in Thailand but I've just bought a small flat in Somerset which I will use as a base for two or three months each year. The holding cost of the flat is negligible, community charge and lease/ground rent charges, about £140 a month which is offset by other gains - it offers a fallback in case the Thailand wheel falls off but also provides for new experiences and travel opportunities.

I'd have trouble limiting myself to only 2 months in Somerset!!

last time I visited it was a bit wet.biggrin.png

  2. The OP is wrong - the minimum pensionable age in the UK is thirty-five.

You are wrong. A serving member of the UK Armed Forces, Police, Fire Service etc can and do receive pensions at any age if they get injured in the course of their duty and are assessed as unfit for continued service.

Depending of course on the extent of their injuries, not all receive a pension. More and more are being fobbed off with a lump sum payment.

    Slighly off topic, so apologies.

  3. Reading these posts day after day have made me come to realize that there are so many foreigners here in Thailand that really have no place else to call their home. They just continue to complain. They don't even have the sense enough to leave. We too are tired of your complains. We too would like you to be happy with yourself, your life. So please, take the next few days to figure out where would you best fit in this world. You could pack your things or sell them and then just quietly leave. Believe me you will not be missed. Look at it this way, the new PM is cleaning-up all the problem areas, and you are included as part of the clean-up.

Rubbish - farangs are not even on the radar.

  4. For the sake of God where do all of you guys "learn" to use the word "retirement-VISA" It is completely false most of the times as there are NO such thing as a Retirement-VISA, the closest you get to that name is probably "Non Immigreant O-A" which is a VISA that is directed towards retired people.

But for you and all you other people using this faulty word (retirement-VISA), that has absolutely no bearing here in Thailand or elsewhere for that matter. You are talking about getting an extension of stay - based on retirement, and that is NOT a VISA. It is an extension of stay from that permission to stay you already got via your "traded" Non Immigfrant O. As you are going from a touristVISA via a Non Immigrant O that the immigration will help you with, and than applying for an extension of stay based on retirement.

    So forget that Retirement-VISA....

    Glegolo

good post but can you now tell me what is a visa shop?

  5. As a 'but, but, Thaksin' ranting do-gooder coup-lover (as is obvious people tell me) I'm really surprised at all those posters who want to go back to the situation we had barely three months ago. A situation which got more and more violent and might have erupted into a civil war type of chaos.

To just say, but that the fault of the others, is ignoring the other side of the story. To simply 'know' the NCPO will 'only' allow reforms which confirm the 'elite' in their position to the detriment of the 'poor, disenfrancised masses' is like hearing a political speech.

To continue to verbally obstruct the chance of reforms without political games but with the Thai people providing input is like agitating against progress. And for what? For a situation where politicians 'take care of' corruption? For politicians using pressure groups in coloutful shirts? For country where a criminal fugitive is said to legally order his Pheu Thai party's government and PM around as if that's normal in a democracy? A government which sneakily handed out a shiny new passport while the country was wading through floodwaters? A government trying to push through a sneakily modified blanket amnesty bill absolving Thaisin and even his little sisters two years in office?

    Democracy anyone?

    you are confused.

no one wants to go back to scene 1 of "how to stage a coup".

Suthep's end game is here today. When you speak of 'chaos', you say/imply that the chaos came from the government when the reality is that the chaos was generated on-purpose with a specific goal in mind. And that chaos served it's purpose to land Thailand in the current situation.

That said, it addresses the rest of your comment about reform. The military is not here to reform any more that reforms are what Suthep wanted. They are here to finish the 2006 job.

Fantastic---pro PTP propaganda. Your last sentence sums you up. give it a rest it's all finished and done with. Arguing the toss page after page in defense of what---Thy style democracy ?? PTP......army---coup"s---Suthep----2006-2010- Thaksin what about this clown, it was down to him to run the country fairly and democratically--He ran it for his self importance, he was removed, PTP removed, but it was not their doing it for other reasons ????

You guys go on and on like a 78 record, attack me---attack anyone who does dare to mention anything against......YOUR version of "what the people want"..............what the people want NOW is different than 3 years ago Surprise -surprise.

Duh, everyone has moved on, its you who gos on like some proverbial cracked record, every frigging day. Take a break, go have a hol on some secluded beach.

  6. At that price I would go the Volvo V40 Cross Country. The interior is light years ahead of the xv and the T5 engine is sweet.

3 year warranty and 5 years free servicing.

But the Volvo V40 Cross Country here is only 2WD.. the XV is AWD
Not a deal breaker. The xv isn't a real off road vehicle and would opt for a local made car for that purpose.

Having owned a couple of imprezas here I would not go that path again without a proper service division.

Motor images warranty program isn't worth the paper it's printed on and parts are comparable with Mercedes Benz parts in price.

Service is bad, lack of service divisions nationwide and parts availability here is a joke.

Subaru Thailand (Motor Image) never again.

Save yourself the headache and buy something with service and warranty and a good dealer network.

motor image is the only dealer here?

Good post though, its only through members experiences posted here that we learn.

  7. Who is Abhisit ?

I've now been in Thailand for almost one year and I'm probably not the only one who have now idea who that Abisit fellow is and what he stands for.

Suggest you get off your bar stool sometime and do a little investigative research - you might well be surprised.

suggest you just ignore this advice, your not missing much. Just let the junta carry on running the show.

  8.

my income is derived from government benefits.

does the Embassy inform the UK authorities as to what I am doing?

I believe in a need to know and they don't need to know.

Well as long as you are entitled to the benefits whilst living outside of the UK all should be OK.

In the last month I have had letters from the Pension dept in Newcastle and my government pension provider asking to confirm I am still alive or my pension could well be stopped. The b*ggers always want to know what you are up to.

I'm trying to get my head around the OP's post.

The OP needs to understand that most Thais do not have a Western-style relationship with their pet dog. The Thai dog, a completely mongrel breed, is allowed to run free and breed indiscriminately, is never disciplined, is rarely petted, and frequently has an untimely demise in collisions with motor vehicles.  It's main value to the owner is to serve as a burglar alarm. Using a leash, walking it, grooming it , teaching it tricks, being attentive to its healthcare, letting it into the house, or developing a strong emotional bond with it are all alien concepts to the overwhelming majority of Thais. While some Thais have adopted Westernized standards of caring for and interacting with their dogs, they are few and far between.

It has been my experience that veterinarians in Thailand do not consider disposal of pet remains to be part of their job description. They expect the owner of the pet to come pick up and dispose of the remains themselves. Those Thais who cremate their pets are only doing so because they live in an urban area where disposal is problematic. I have never heard of a dog being cremated out in the countryside. In most cases the carcass is dumped somewhere where the odor won't become overwhelming and allowed to decompose, a process which takes just a few weeks in the tropical heat.  This may sound barbaric to some Westerners, but economy and pragmatism are the driving forces here. The concept of keeping a deceased pet's remains in an urn most Thais would find bizzare, if not downright comical. It should be noted that this isn't even a common practice in the West.  I strongly suspect this is why an urn was not provided to you. 4500 baht for the cremation service, especially when the dog's remains have to be shipped to and from the crematorium does not sound unreasonable to me for a service located in Bangkok. Also, I do not believe pet euthanasia is widely practiced in Thailand, perhaps for religious reasons.

Because the cultures are so different, it is unrealistic to expect that veterinarian and pet cremation services will conform to a 'T' with the standards and expectations you may have become accustomed to back home. You might as well expect the vet hospital to have available grief counselors, a Julliard trained organist to play your favorite hymns, and a grieving chapel on premises. It's simply not realistic. I also think the OP needs to be more understanding of the fact that English isn't the first language for Thais. Mis-spelling of a pet's name, at the risk of sounding horribly insensitive, hardly constitutes a traumatizing event.  Once the OP has recovered from the stress of losing his pet, I hope he will give some thought to finding ways to prevent inevitable minor aggravations such as these from mushrooming into major irritations.

it was just another excuse to denigrate thais

I agree with the OP - it was appalling service.

Forget Thai or western, to receive the remains back (especially from a veterinary business) in than manner is disgraceful.

I would suggest that it would not happen that way in the west.

that is exactly the point. it didnt happen in the west and thais do not have the same ideas about the bodies of dead animals that western cultures do

you are talking out your hoop and do not have a clue about Thai people.  We lost our Husky 3 months ago to either a snake bite or poison. We found him dead in the garden after coming back from a shopping trip, our other dog a female Bang Kaew was next to him.

He was only 5 years old and my wife cried for days afterwards.  Two burly local boys come and dug a big hole in the garden and my missus placed his lead and dog bowl in the ground with him.  There will be never be a Moo Ping again - terrific dog.

  10. You have every right to voice your opinion on this forum but get your facts right before engaging your typing finger.

If you read somewhere in my post that I believed I was "the fountain of all knowledge" then you have a vivid imagination. And if you look up the meaning of a throwaway remark you may not use the term so freely when describing my comments.

Believe me, anything I say about "red/PTP groupies" are not throwaway remarks, I believe them wholeheartedly and put a lot of thought into them. Also I do not try to blanket cover anyone who dares to disagree with me by sh#tcanning the red/PTP fan, I just really don't like that particular group of people and have no problem saying so.

And to quote Charles Bukowski - "

"The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote first and take orders later; in a dictatorship you don't have to waste your time voting."

Reading your painful babble worries me, to think we come from the same set of Isles too. Just proves a good secondary modern education is wasted.

We all have a quote or two as well, "We are here to defend democracy, not practice it" - Clint.

  11. If you are leaving Thailand from Suvarnabhumi you can get your re-entry permit at International Departures lounge No 2, it is manned 24 hrs a day and you do not need to have paperwork or photo as they do it for you..  The charge is 1200THB for a single and very good service.  Did it in May, used to always get a single re-entry when I did my extension at Phitsanulok but most of the time never used the things.

  12. I always thought the standard petrol Vigo was 163hp, nethertheless I have driven the 2.7 Vigo in two door form and its quick.  If they did an auto one I would be interested. Meanwhile I slog along with my trusty but noisy D4D, until the new Hilux arrives.

Come on, you know you can get 25,500 posts by stumps drawn.whistling.gif

  13. Sooooo, tell me cos I don't know. Does LPG fitted to a 2.7 petrol up the TQ and HP...?

with 25k posts to your name you appear to have plenty of spare time on your hands, so be a good chap and pop off to your nearest Toyo dealers and ask.

Better still have a test drive on the latest Tuners or arrange some stop light drags with the local lads and came back and tell us all.

    We wait with baited anticipation.

Ace of Pop, over to you______
