  1. Watcharaphon Update, last one for awhile!

Water increasing and closing in to the 5 Yaek and outside Wattanakosin School.

My village is closing things up at midnight. They got word that they are releasing water from HokWa right through our area. Almost everybody is leaving and they have a big team staying back in the village to fend the water off as long as possible. As I have a place to stay in Bangna, am heading off shortly...would stay on and help but then again don't want to get stuck or get my car stuck here.

BTW, has anybody heard about this water release from HokWa? I haven't seen anything about it anywhere....but most of the guys here know about it.

Take care! I will call the Village Mgr. once in a while to get updates....hopefully I won't be away from home for long....

I guess this is what they are talking about:

  3. A few pics from around Watcharaphon.....good reason to play with my Canon Powershot G12.....

Showing W. Road about a kilometer from the 5 Yaek, and then Suk. 5 and the shortcut to Foodland. The dry one is my village, thank Buddha! Note how high the klong is...that's on Suk. 5, about a kilometer or a little less going west from the 5 Yaek.

Such a beautiful day today, too!

  4. I just returned from my Saphan Mai recon mission.

Great Pics! I used to live right there, in a village next to Tesco....lived in that area actually for about ten years before moving to Watcharaphon. It was always prone to flooding during strong rains, but would drain off fast.

  5. Watcharaphon/Sai Mai Update!!!

--- Quite a bit of new water since yesterday finding it's way into the low points of W. Road and Suk. 5 road going towards Sai Mai.

---I only went as far as the 'lake' after Palm Lake resort and then turned around as it was quite deep. Probably could make it through but didn't want to risk it.

---Almost made it to Hathai Rat Road down Suk. 5, but was pretty deep close to the intersection so turned around. Lots of pooled water on the roads, nothing more than 30-40 cms. I reckon. Couple of villages down there off the road that have some water, but not much.

---Ruam Mit Phattana road is clear and dry so far - went down to the end to get some breakfast, business as usual.

---Suk. 5 towards Foodland has pooled water right after the 5Yaek, nothing much. The 'lake' right behind the shops there is breaching a bit I suppose.

---My village is quite dry, they have pumped water out to the canal, which had gathered after that quick but ghastly storm last night.

All in all, where I'm at, if things don't get much worse, I'm staying put. Two more days and the tides start going down, maybe more water can be pumped out faster and things will start drying up. Just hope Hok Wa can hold on a few more days!

  6. Why can't someone in Government or a reliable spokesperson just communicate the situation:

    1. Flooding in......................................
    2. Water is proceeding to................................
    3. If......................happens, then ..........................will happen
    4. Your district is expected to flood to ...................meters because your land elevation is.................. and the water level will be............................

If this info is out there, then I apologise, but it would help for people in monitoring the situation and preperation

Far too clear and logical for this band of morons.

  7. Watcharaphon:

---Just had a ghastly but quick rain/thunder storm. Some pooling of water in the village, but they are draining it now and it is going down. I am in Narasiri village by the 5 Yaek.

---Water has risen considerably since early afternoon, large pools now by Wattana Kosin School, the sports club, and by the 'lake' after Palm Lake Resort.

---Still, could make it as far as the restaurants, water is getting deeper though.

---Army truck stationed at the 5 Yaek for emergency measures.

---Everything ready to evacuate at a moment's notice, will wait until the last minute, but ready to go if we have to.

  8. I just got an email from the german embassy, saying that tomorrow, at 6 pm there will be the worst floodings and possibly also into the inner center.

That would fit very good to our predictions here, and... I trust the embassy more than the government in moment.

Probably I will hit the Londoner later for some "Flood survival drinking" - I guess not much people left in BKK to do so

    Good luck to all :)

Lots of predictions, thankfully none of them have been true yet. I wonder where the German Govt. got their intel?

  9. We called to someone we know in Khu Bon Rd (Ram Inthra soi 71,km.8). He said that water is coming up through the drains at Wat Khu Bon. Also at the end of our soi. Khu Bon soi 27.

I guess it is just a matter of time until it floods. I guess this water is coming from Minburi side.

Looking at GE it seems you have canals on both sides of you (13°51'9.06"N, 100°39'57.65"E). Best of luck!

  10. Watcharaphon Update:

---Little bit of water coming out of drainage just past Wattanakosin School - the small canal next to the school quite high, but still OK...up about a centimeter from yesterday. They are pumping water from my village out to the canal, under control so far.

---Pockets of water along the road going North. the 'lake' on the right going North, past Palm Lake Resort has taken over 2 1/2 lanes, grown a bit. The area where they are constructing the new road is turning into a lake.

---I got as far as just before the German restaurant (Shcweine, or whatever it is called - good pork knuckle there!), and turned around. Water has crept up a bit since yesterday, but not much, just deeper now where it was before, and not moving too fast South.

---If you take a right, on the road that goes to Foodland, there is a little bit of water seeping out from behind the shops, just after the expressway overpass. I went in a bit, it's another 'lake' back there, and is pretty much at capacity right now.

Sorry I can't go further down North than the restaurants for you guys, I know you must want to know what is happening there. Don't want to risk the car unless I have to. If anyone has updates further North than I went, let me know.

Let's see if when they finally start draining the canal it will ease the water creep.....

  11. Thanon's : Hat Thai Rat - Sai Mai - Nimit Mai - KLONG SAMWA

27 Oct today, drove up HTR from Hat Thai Mit. HTM lock gate still closed, and now the water up about 30cm from yesterday. Seems they are only letting it go down stream to Minburi at a very slow pace.

No flooding along HTR left and right until almost near the top where the bridge crosses Kanchanapisek Highway. Here, villages on the right are starting to flood. Crossing the Highway, the water has started flowing across Sai Mai Rd (right outside the Western University). Straight on towards the bridge over Klong Phraya Suren, all villages on right were flooded about 1m or more. Lock gates at Klong Phraya Suren were opened at 80cm, but the water is almost up to the road level, so I guess it wont be long before the water comes and closes that road. Some officials were there to take photos and notes, but they wouldnt give any answers to local's questions, oddly........

But all this water is coming down from Klong Hok Wa.

Nimit Mai Road - no flooding until you get up to the 3-way junction at Lam Luk Ka - about 500m before, alot of water on the road, so I did a u-turn and came back. Still alot of cars and trucks traveling up and down even this evening (in fact more than usual!)

Finally, they just completed laying sandbags from Suwintawong right up Nimit Mai Rd (in the middle raised reservation part) until junction with Hat Thai Mit (where the lock gates seem to be closed on Klong Sam Wa) - seems they want to try and box in water and push it to the east of Nimit Mai.

Nimit Mai may well get flooded heavily in 1-2 days time, blocking off any escape route from Lam Luk Ka area towards the airport.

    cheers

Thanks Andy, very useful! I can see why they want to push the water East of Nimit Mai, looking on Google Earth there is a lot of farmland and not too much habitation there, so I guess it would make sense.

You think the water will make it to the 5 way intersection on Watcharaphon/Sai Mai Road?

  12. Fellow Watcharapolians, we have left our house. We couldnt stand the stress of waiting. The water was pretty high in front of the 7-11 near Laddarom when we left. I don't think my Altis could have made it through without a little bit of damage. I'm pretty sure you guys live south of me on Watcharapol, so you may not have water yet coming to your village. We wish you the best. Stay safe.

Good luck Staggerlee! We are hanging on, as the water makes its inexorable journey south.....

  13. Just checked and the water is higher than yesterday for sure. I don'[t think I would abe able to get out of my village on a motorbike. The water is up to the sand barrier of my village, and I live on the perimeter. tHe water is coming from the canal into my garden. I think it may be time to flee, after I silicone up some loose ends.

    Good luck!

  14. 22.19 Water fastly overflows Klong 2 water gate in Sai Mai lockerz.com/s/150445809 (via @Kitti3Miti & @momtum ) #thaifloodeng

those living at south of Sai Mai and the Watcharapolians, my mo baan security just informed that water would come after midnight :-( they will close the gate of the mo baan with sandbag, if anyone considers to leave, RUN NOW.

it matches to the TV live update #171 quoted above, and I checked the road drain ( sewage drain ) water level just raised from -20cm below yesterday to -10cm below now.

let's prepare and good luck !!

Hi, did the water really come that much? It looks a bit more but not a lot more.....

Somebody told me there is a water barrier somewhere in Sai Mai....how is it holding up?

  15. Last night i saw messages posted from the few people around Watcharaphol. I live in that area near the 5 way junction, but abandoned ship already one week ago as luckily I hve a condo downtown.

Any updates from the Watcharopholians would be greatly appreciated. Has the water arrived yet?

Good luck to all of you and especially my fellow Watcharapolians.

From the 5 way up W Road to the next intersection, i just checked:

---some spillover at the first 'lake' on the right, about 1.5 kilometers in, the one they have put the corrugated tin up to hide...

---some water a couple kilometers in caused by overflow from the standing 'lakes'....in that area where all the restaurants are (you know, that Shweine German restaurant, etc).

---some water on the roads here and there where villages are draining their sewers

---water gets deep just past the gas station on the left (PTT?). Just yesterday I could drive up to the 7-11 on the left, across the street there is an old crone who makes great breakfast food. Today just an hour ago I got as far as the gas station and made a uturn, cars were barely making it through there, but they were getting by from the intersection, just risky. I would say water on the road after the gas station and after to the intersection is about 30-40 cm. deep.

---I live in the first village on the left past the 5way, on Watcharaphon. Still dry as a bone, the small canal on the other side of the wall at our village is normal level, about a meter to spare. they are not draining any water from the sewer, think it is fairly dry as well.

My conclusion is that so far, in places that it has been flooded since last Saturday/Sunday, it is much deeper and nearly impassable. However, it hasn't really spread South, except the spillage from the 'lakes'. I think a lot of the flooding problems up by the villages where the gas station and beyond has been caused by the villages draining out tons of water from their sewers. If they didn't do that quite so much I doubt it would be so bad (though I understand why they are doing it).

    Any other Watcharapudnicks with updates?

Sidenote: The 'shortcut' to foodland (you guys know what I mean) still has that small flooded area on it, but it has not increased significantly. I'm still not ready to abandon my pirate ship, though everything is set to evacuate in 15 minutes' time if need be. I've given up on government and agency predictions....I figure my own eyes are the best way to judge. I will give an update about four hours from now, when I go out on my next regularly scheduled scout.

  16. I'm in Watcharaphol, mo baan 1km east of the 5-junction. still dry here but not for long :-(

18.30h taxi home via expressway and Sukhaphiban 5 road, still dry. but there are A LOT of military trucks with soldiers ( about 10 plus )heading Sai Mai direction. not looking good.

Probably going to try and reinforce the floodwall there, man if that thing goes we are all royally frocked!

  17. I'm on Watcharapol closer to the Peom Sin end, about 4 km from the 5 intersection. I live in a village right near the village you referred to pumping the water into the street. Today I drove my motorbike through the water on the road there to go to Thanom Mit market, and was thinking that it won't be long until I won't be able to drive through. I can understand why people are panicking. Sai Mai Rd is flooded in parts, right? Peom Sin rd is flooded in parts also I think, although I haven't driven that way in a week. They say a lot of water will come tonight. I heard that our village might be on higher ground, and maybe the flooding won't be too high. I think you are furthur on down the road, so your elevation might even be a little higher, I"m not sure. We're packing our bags tonight just in case. My car is in the shop getting painted and fixed right now, so at least it might be safe if they put it up on a jack in the shop. I havent' bought any sand bags yet, but if the water rises a lot tonight, I may buy them tomorrow.

    Hey there

My village mgr was out tonight, and we had a chance to talk with him. He says there are 2-3 days left before real flooding might happen, but he wouldn't guarantee that. We're all packed as well, going to see in the morning what things look like. Thanks for the input! Us Watcharaphonians have to look out for one another! :)

  18. I'm in Watcharaphon, very close to the 5 way intersection. Further up W. Road, almost at Sai Mai (about 4-5 kilometers up the road) they are having some flooding, a lot of it as a result of the big villages in that area pumping water out onto their street. All that is still about 4 kilometers from my house, and since this morning hasn't really seemed to be getting closer, though a couple of watersheds are spilling over on the road in a couple places.

Anyone else know this area and have any info on what might happen around here? I drive over to the flooded area at Sai Mai and do a check about every four hours or so to see if it is getting closer to my village. I definitely have a point in mind on the road about 1.5 kilometers away that if the water got there I would probably abandon ship, but for now I'm just doing the waiting game. Lots of people with lots of panicked warnings, but judging with my own eyes seems to have the best results so far for me. At any rate, I am ready to evac from the house in ten minutes time if I need to.

  19. As long as Thaksin and his Red Shirt cronies are breathing, the division in Thai society will continue to grow.

What about the converse: as long as there are parties refusing to accept the results of a free and fair elections, the division in Thai society will continue to grow?

    2 sides to every issue.

By the way, I am neither a Thaksin fan nor a fan of the pre-Thaksin status quo.:jap:

Pray tell, who hasn't recognized the results of the last election?

Last time I checked the party that won the elections is in power now.

He's still living in the past....

  20. How shameful of an NGO to abandon the effort because they don't like the way they are being treated. I have little respect for them at this juncture. They need to rise above the situation and do the work that needs to be done.

There will be plenty of time for fighting after the crisis is over.

Shame on FROC for kow-towing and attempting to create positive propaganda for the PTP......they need to understand that all Thai people deserve those supplies, not just red shirt sympathizers.

  21. Beware that any donations you make to FROC will be repackaged before distributed to the needy with a picture of Thaksin (or other red-shirt superstar) on it. If you have no objections to that, then by all means proceed. Otherwise, find another worthwhile charitable organization to donate to.

Are you just venting or do you have evidence of this?

I have seen pictures of the relief goods trucks with the PTP banners and have read the rumours that the relief bags are distributed to Red Shirt people only, some as far as Chiang Mai.

    So, you have proof?

I have seen 4-5 pics of donations labeled with thaskin or other PTP pics on them, with wording to the effect that the donations are provided by said person. Big Thaksin posters are also showing up in areas that are in distress, that he will help them.
