Silicone is not the thing to use, just buy the plumbers putty/semi liquid pipe joint compound. It is easy to find once you know the magic words (probably American) and look in the correct places or use Lazada. FWIW I virtually never use it and I don’t know if the can I bought from one if the big suppliers a few years ago is still liquid. NB I just checked and though it has volatile solvents, it is still useable. Your plumber is as good as most Thai sparkies ????

Taking my thai phone to Europe.
sometimewoodworker replied to jack71's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
You have incomplete and wrong information you are correct that airplane mode does stop cellular data connections. You are correct that airplane mode does stop Wi-Fi. Airplane mode does not stop Bluetooth so you are wrong (at least for the largest single maker of devices) How do you think that users can connect to the planes data services. As an experiment I enabled airplane mode. As you correctly state data and Wi-Fi are disabled Bluetooth is not disabled I then connected to my hotspot, this connected via Bluetooth and enabled a hitherto unsurfaced wireless Ethernet via Bluetooth interface So why you think that Bluetooth is automatically disabled I don’t know, it’s certainly possible that Android devices may do that, but the largest single supplier of devices (Apple) does not. It is extremely likely that other Android devices do not disable BT or lie to you, as the need to connect to airplane data services easily will mandate that BT is switched on in AIRPLANE mode. -
All Skype to non Skype calls cost, absolutely correct that they are inexpensive, calling a U.K. landline or USA one is less than $2 per hour. If you regularly call specific countries there are subscriptions for a few dollars that mean there are no extra costs.

That is certainly likely though the fuse in that version is almost certainly completely non standard, if not actually against the relevant regulations. -
Office Table Top - Acacia vs Teak vs Rubberwood vs Other
sometimewoodworker replied to creative1000's topic in DIY Forum
The hardness of the wood may make little difference to the ability to work with the wood. Teak is quite a soft wood (note not softwood) at a Janka of about 1,000 while acacia is between 1,700 and 2,000. The difficulty of working with teak is that is has a large amount of silicates (1.4%) so it will dull the tools quickly, so it isn’t really so much the skill but the ability to sharpen the tools so it is actually quite an easy wood to work with, it isn’t the best choice because of its softness. conversely acacia Will make a good desk top as it will not show marks easily but it’s more difficult to work with due to the hardness. -

as the title “A particular maker of Android phones that maybe be wise to avoid ” at a minimum if you have one of these please make a visual inspection, you are likely to be able to see if there is a problem. There is a YouTube tech journalist whose video has just come across my feed he is Mrwhosetheboss his channel is one of the larger ones and the video that caught my attention has had over 4.5 million views in the 6 days since it has been posted, it will be easy to find as at the moment it’s the second newest. I will not be naming the company due to the draconian laws in Thailand and I certainly have no ill will towards the company. They make a verity of excellent products, I have a few and will continue to consider them in future. The problems effect many different models though the causes seems to be similar. Don’t think that because your phone is old or brand new that you can be sure that you are immune to this. I actually have one of this company’s phones and have had the problem part replaced, though I will now be taking it apart to check the maker of the replacement. The problem can be remarkably serious and has caused the most serious of deadly consequences , though only a relatively few in the 300 million devices sold.

Here's a mystery ,for me anyway
sometimewoodworker replied to worgeordie's topic in The Electrical Forum
OK that is more clear, though it is far less than certain that it is sure that it is made in the U.K. There are quality products produced in China for U.K. companies. There are also c*r*a*p products that exactly copy the U.K. quality products made in China but use c*r*a*p materials and manufacturing. There are very few products actually made in the U.K. It will be educational to see pictures of the rear. It is also possible that it has been miss assembled or even miss wired, but is actually a quality item, or that there is something else going on. -
Here's a mystery ,for me anyway
sometimewoodworker replied to worgeordie's topic in The Electrical Forum
@Lantern That that terminology I understand, however the characterisation of it as a U.K. unit and mention of “the socket” means that exactly what configuration is meant is unclear. the “UK 3 pin gang switch” is unclear as exactly to what it is, there are several different possibilities. -

sometimewoodworker replied to worgeordie's topic in The Electrical Forum
I’m not at all sure exactly what is meant by a 3 gang switch, your description seems rather individualistic ???????? so a picture might help. Also that it is U.K. format (I assume socket) doesn’t mean that it is actually compliant with the relevant BS numbers on it. It could easily be a c*r*a*p*y Chinese knock-off, so an investigation of the back of it may show why there is a problem. FWIW BigClive on YouTube has taken apart a significant number of products like this and you would be amazed at the corners cut and dangers lurking. -
Postpaid SIM with marriage visa?
sometimewoodworker replied to stoicccc's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
I have an extension of stay based on an old Non-O visa. I have both a pre-pay and a post-pay account with AIS. You may well find it helpful to be accompanied by your personal long, black haired interpreter when you visit the mobile phone provider’s store. -
Office Table Top - Acacia vs Teak vs Rubberwood vs Other
sometimewoodworker replied to creative1000's topic in DIY Forum
No. Because whatever wood you use will have a finish coating all of it. You certainly would not want to finish just the top, as if you did it would soon become a banana. ???????? The stronger the aromatics in the wood the sooner they will off-gas. The only wood’s that are left unfinished are the cedar lining of drawers and cupboards and they will loose their effectiveness in time FWIW the grade of rubber wood illustrated is rather low, unless you like defects you want AA grade. The AC is cheap stuff. You generally pay for the quality you get. There are no bargains in wood, unless you get off cuts that are too small to be valuable. -
there is no 1 rate. You will probably be on 1.1.2 there is an an additional FT charge that is around ฿1 per unit though there is a sliding scale discount at the moment, if you use a lot, no discount. the 4.5 /5 Baht is roughly correct. The reason that nobody can be precise is that your consumption could be using 1 meter for more than 1 place but a private meter to calculate your charge.

The difference will be in the resolution available, pretty obviously, however you may have a need to distinguish fine detail in a small part of the image, in which case the 5 is better. So the benefits will be absolutely dependent on exactly what you want to see. If you just want to see if a person is in the building 2Mp cameras may be good enough, if you want to see if he has shaved then 5 or 8 may be needed.

Sim only package-12 months
sometimewoodworker replied to Gabe H Coud's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
No it isn’t. It is your reading or comprehension that is sadly lacking as the detail you say are not there are. Also as different packages have different limitations, as I noted the precise details are in the T&Cs. -
Sim only package-12 months
sometimewoodworker replied to Gabe H Coud's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
“All network calls” specifically means mobile networks and has nothing to do with landlines. It also means that calls totalling 30 minutes are free (it is unlikely, but possible, that individual calls under 30 minutes are free) again the details are in the T&Cs of the contact. Landline calls are separate from that and may be charged (most likely are) but that is in the T&C of the contract so they may be free. There is no monthly limit to call length, just a monthly free limit. -
Breakdown and deterioration of materials.
sometimewoodworker replied to phetphet's topic in General Topics
No tangent. The post topic is Breakdown and deterioration of materials. The post gives examples of items that breakdown here that do not breakdown in other climates. I replied to a quoted part of your post. There is no obligation to quote and reply to all of a post. Though I didn’t “go of on a tangent” going of on tangents are common features of fora like these. -
Many offices accept a yellow book/pink card as proof of address, some don’t.
-
Clearly you haven’t done both. There is very little difference between a renewal of either a 2 year temporary license, 5 year permanent license or a new 2 year temporary license with an IDP Also you can apply at any DLT office. The documents under do not mention the need in some offices to have viewed the Thai video and have a certificate showing this. Other offices will have the video for viewing. Many offices require an online appointment, some do not.
