I think that's probably the best idea. However, it needs to be kept away from mainstream events like the Olympics/World Championships as it would add many extra days to the event. Plus once you had a trans category they'd want a non-binary category, an androgyne category, xenogender etc. By the time the event finished it would be time for the next one to start.
