  1. I changed to 1meg/512k at the beginning of the year - the price of the internet was reduced 200 baht ,but I got a true dish and phone sim card ( 400 baht a month worth of calls ) and all up it costs me another 100 baht more than I was paying originally.

I was also told that my phone line could only do the 1meg - I was happy to get double my speed so I did not bother with trying to argue , maybe in a few months I will push the issue - see what new packages they put on the market in the future.

  2. In the main it is the dam_n fund managers managing the assets on behalf of Joe Public in the pension schemes, or other funds.

    <snip>

at the expense of the long term investors.

it has been a ponzi scheme with all the 401k investors as the mugs - I don't know that they have woken up to the reality of how they have been scammed yet though.

and 20+% unemployment means markedly less for the ponzi bucket.

  3. the report looks like it centres around the expat package of the full wife and kids and international school type.

with the decline in the financial services industries I don't think you will see many of these in the future and it will be back to the standard salary, accom , transport , expenses/per diem and a couple of flights back to your point of origin package.

    as ballpoint said

I'd have to say Thailand. I also like Vietnam, and parts of China, Indonesia and the Philippines

    singapore :o

  4. I don't know if it's admissable as evidence in a UK court, but this is most certainly not the UK but Thailand.

most times the footage is shown to the person and they then confess .

From the footage, it's easy to recognize faces and tattoos if the person is less than 10 meters away from the camera.

with well located D1/4CIF , I would say out to 15 metres - also think about the camera field of view and some cameras can be fitted with a wider angle lens , though that shortens the range.

A bigger problem is contrast: camera's pointed at open, sunny spaces will not properly record things in the foreground (which appear too dark on screen).

this is a very important issue with camera placement - a well lit background ( sun or floodlight ) will cause problems if the camera is not placed correctly

  5. the info below relates mainly to IP cams which give their output to ethernet LAN cable - the link you provided , the cams output is to co-axial cable to the DVR.

not sure where to buy in Thailand , but some things to decide.

camera image sensor - CMOS or CCD ? - CCD is more expensive but CMOS seems to be catching up for image quality.

compression codec - MJPEG or MPEG4 class 2 or MPEG4 class 10 (H264 ) - these compression codecs are important for how much bandwidth your cameras will be using when sending their video streams to your storage medium ( not so important with 4 cams on 10/100 ethernet ) . The worry you will have is storage of the video files as video at television resolution ( D1 or 4CIF ) and 25 frames per second can use up alot of space. H264 encoding adds to the price of the IP camera , but cuts down the space needed for storage. you need to calculate how much storage you will require for the amount of time you want to be keeping the recordings and high motion requires more space than a mainly static image - a basic free storage calculator here http://www.imakenews.com/kin2/e_article000...5FDQ,b25tl0b3,w

also what happens when the power is off ? unless you will have backup power at each cam ( and 12 VDC plugpacks are very inefficient ) you need to think about PoE ( power over ethernet ) routers connected to a decent UPS.

Infrared illumination on cheaper cameras may not be enough and you may need some extra IR lamps - though they are cheap.

resolution , camera placement and fps are very important as many times when the video footage is reviewed it turns out to be useless. there are some UK guidelines about what is required from video footage for it to be admissible in court ( sorry no link , needs googling :o ) - I realise this is not a setup for legal/insurance reasons and is in thailand , but they are good guidelines to be aware of.

last bit of ramble for this morning :D - internet security - I don't have my home IP cameras directly accessible via the internet as a brute force password attack is quite possible , I run an openVPN server which I connect to and then connect to the cams.

  6. Last September, protesters upset that elections had ushered in a pro-Thaksin government, even took over Bangkok's international airport for a week,
The TIME reporter either incredibly doesn't know some of the facts, or was reluctant to bring them up (oddly) as is standard in professional journalism.

this was organised by his PR firm.

  7. I like routers that will take open firmwares

Hi Stu. I remembered you mentioned this and the idea of having better firmware appeals to me so I had a look for compatible Linksys routers, but it looks like the more recent versions aren't compatible with tomato anymore. Can you still get them? I would kill for a router that supported openvpn or something like that (not so keen on the proprietary vpns).

when I was last at Lak Si plaza there were still 54GL's on the shelves for between 1800-1900 baht

Tomato is the slicker interface and if you don't want to tinker too much it is the way to go - the SGTPepperSKU openVPN GUI firmware is the one to get if you want to run an openVPN server ( GUI supports 2 servers and 2 clients )

openwrt seems to support many more System on a Chip units and I have been using x-wrt with it - if you want to get really radical with your router check out http://www.ubnt.com/products/rs.php , you install openwrt on it :o and add whatever you want to the 3 mPCI slots. there is supposed to be a distributor on chang wattana road and I was going to see if they had them and how much.

  8. I like routers that will take open firmwares

just put what ever modems you use into bridge mode and control your connection from the router.

I have a couple of setups with openVPN servers and clients running on the routers so there is just a transparent VPN tunnel between all the sites.

my home 54GL is tomato 1.23 with VPN server , so it is connect via VPN , use the router to issue the WoL to the machine I want to access and then VNC.

I have a spare 54GL which has the SDHC mod done and running openwrt - it is a testbed/learning box.

  9. the number just refers to the plug type

the computer on which when you open up network connections and there is nothing but "add new connection" , is the networks socket on the motherboard ( ie - a socket near the USB and sound sockets ) or is it a network card in a slot further down.

it seems as if your network adapter on the computer has not been installed.
