Death of Gene Hackman and Wife now Investigated as 'Suspicious'
Qman replied to CharlieH's topic in World News
From recent news, a maintenance worker called security when no one answered the door. Security could see a body on the floor and called 911 who came and entered the home. The dead dog was in a kennel in the bathroom (did not mention if kennel was open or closed) and two other dogs could go in and out through a pet door in the home. A search warrant was obtained so authroities could collect items and documents to further investigate. All does seem odd and the autosopsy and tosicology reports should identify the real cause. So far there is not evidence of foul play. As GH is desceribed as frail and had a cane with him he could have easily fallen but you would expect his wife to respond but she was in another room. The dead dog makes the whole thing more strange and would seemingly indicate something like a gas leak or carbon monoxide. The date of death is unknown but appears to have been a while. Also odd that as a 95 year old none of his children seem to have been in recent contact or alerted aurthorities to do a health check. Sad that his memory may be more associated with his unusual passing than his career. -
Electric Toothbrush in Carryon Luggage?
Qman replied to BillStrangeOgre's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
I always take mine in carry on and in the plastic cover which also holds spare brushes. As it is rechargeable there could be issues in checked luggage. I have not travelled through HK but never an issue in the countries through which I have travelled. -
I owned a 1980 BMW 323i which was the top model of the 3 series at that time. Had nice dual exhaust and was fast for that era. Sadly was stolen while I was at work in the Netherlands one day and police made you come in to their station for auto theft. Police said it was probably already on a ship in Belgium never to be seen again. Only had it a few months and was heartbroken to lose it.

Australian expat donates van to Pattaya children’s home - video
Qman replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
Daryl purchased and gifted the van to the Foundation as a pure act of kindness in the memory of his deceased wife. A decent man just doing something nice for others. -
I like NyQuil which is an over the counter cold and flu medicine with some sleep aid medicine while DayQuil does not contain the sleep element. I take the liquid version at home but it will be too large for security at airports so the capsules would be better. As a decongestant it clears sinuses which can help if you have issues with equalising ear pressure on flights. While it helps you go to sleep it is not so strong that you would sleep through emergencies. On a long flight you might take twice as it has six hour intervals between medications.

(Not) paying tax for my motorcycle - consequences?
Qman replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
Biggest risk is being stopped at a checkpoint and not having registration/tax up to date. Fine and possible confiscation until fines paid. I like to stay legal in all things here as when caught violating a rule/law you are at the mercy of the police at that time. Not the same as for Thais. As noted by others go to one of the inspection shops (Yellow gear shapped image) and they will do inspection as over five years old and handle paperwork with DLT. Just need Green Book. I had registration expire while gone for covid and when I returned I took bike to have inspected and registration paid. They charged for the duration of the expired term and it went to the usual expiry date, not a year from the date I did the renewal. Luckily I noticed one day and then had to do another renewal. If your official expiry date is slightly in the future it may be worth waiting until near that date to have all extended for another year so as not to do again in a short period of time. -
As stated by others you must go through probabe to appoint an executor of the estate who has the legal right to dispose of assets of the decedant. If there is a will this should be followed by the executor. Applies to physical assets, bank accounts, personal items, etc. In the absence of a will I am not sure how the executor identifies beneficiaries.

This brand makes a variety of coffee styles and I drink the Espresso and the Caramel Macchiato ones. It takes two packets for a larger style mug. While this brand is available most stores, the Caramel Macchiato is not available in many stores although Big C usually has it available.

I ate there many times as a nice store with many seats comapred to the small shop on Pattaya Tai by Tukcom. Never seemed crowded but lots of Grab drivers picking up orders. They also had a drive thru window. I preferred Texas Chicken to KFC as not nearly as greasy and they offered a lot of combos along with rice bowls and wraps. Sorry to see them leaving Thailand.

Is this plan of action ok.
Qman replied to Issanraider's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
No reason to wait until 20 days before the visa exempt entry expires. Just go shortly after arrival and start the process to ensure there is plenty of time in case there is an issue with anything. Also when you get the Non-O they can do the extension based on retirement immediately after. This is the typical process at Jomtien immigration. Note the retirement extension is timed to start at the end of the Non-O 90 day expiration even though all done as part of the same filing process. It is beneficial to have the all these visas approved as it supports the Residency Certificate which is necessary for drivers licenses, buying car or motorbike, etc. Again, no need to wait as the earlier the better in processing the visa changes. -
ATM withdrawl limits?
Qman replied to StandardIssue's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I use Kasikorn and this is the same as my account. Of course you can take whatever you want inside the bank in person. If someone is using a foreign ATM card at a local bank the rules will probably be different. Also local use with Kasikorn is free but when traveling around in Thailand there are fees when using branches outside your main location. -
New passaport and transfer visa
Qman replied to Mika78's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
As noted by others new passport details need to be informed to bank and phone provider and also on your car/motorbike licenses. -
Office romances are not necessarily an issue but romance relationships between a boss and subordinate is a very slippery slope. The MeToo movement was built on such things although usually with the boss being male rather than female but both situations occur. Using taxpayer funds to hire a romantic interest adds another dimension to the situation. It was a poor decision under the circumstances and could have easily been avoided.

Given the time and effort to visit immigration for documents I would suggest getting two to be safe rather than being told you need two later and having to repeat the process all over again. I recall the certificate of residency is only good for a certain period of time (maybe 30 days) so do't get too far ahead of your planned transaction. My issue may have been related to getting a drivers license and the time elapsed between my first visit there and then returning on the day of the appointment.

Worth checking a few stores as someone usually has a sale on. Makro on Sukhumvit in Jomtien also tends to be competitive whenever I looked for electrical goods.

I may have been described more as cloudy or a film but although not really noticeable to me it was cleared or cleaned with a laser. No issue whatsoever. Glad they have an easy solution if necessary as it only takes a few minutes in their office environment. Not sure why it may happen but so far only one eye needed the procedure.

My surgery was done under anethesia but a little presence of mind as I had to respond to some instructions during surgery. One eye followed by the other at a later date. I had an eye patch until the next morning to avoid any scratching during the night while sleeping. Also a follow up visit the next day to inspect the surgery and status. How painful can it be? No pain whatsoever. What are the best practices in choosing an intra ocular lens? I had distance vision. Readers are widely available and only use for computer and closer. Can read most things six feet away and further. Still have eye exams with good results. Is this a once in a lifetime operation (under normal conditions)? You can have lens yellowing or discolorization. They did a lens "cleaning" in their office by laser with no anethesia which took about 15 minutes. No issues and was walk in and out. Recovery time (under normal conditions)? Essentially immediate. I recall there were some restrictions about bending over with head below waist, no lifting heavy things, etc. for a little while. Nothing really that restrictive. After full recovery, what precautions are necessary - eg is swimming OK Pool or sea? None. Any other... They gave me antibiotic eye drops to use for 30 days and another one to use for a week. Worth adhering to the prescription as not worth any risk when it comes to your eyes. Glad I had the surgery. The first thing you notice is how bright everything is compared to the old eyesight. You should feel comfortable with the person doing the surgery and their professionalism.

Medical Certificate essential for Driving License application
Qman replied to Delight's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
There are many clinics around Pattaya and Jomtien which do the medical certificate for 100-150 Baht. Not much evaluation but necessary piece of paper to submit for a license or renewal. There is a clinic next to 7-11 at the Machanu statue intersection where Thrappaya Road turns right down to Jomtien Beach Road. Can go and get the certificate while waiting for Immigration to prepare your residency letter. As they are cheap I always get two (car & motorbike) as you never know if one original is enough and not worth wasting a day to do over again. -
Changing your passport number on a Thai driving licence
Qman replied to Guderian's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
When I renewed my passport I went to Land Transport and changed my drivers licenses for car and motorbike. While it may have been unnecessary I made the decision to have all documents correct. Probably not a issue in most situations but if there is a serious accident or something else it possibly could be used against you for not being in compliance. My preference is to avoid situations where the authorities have an opportunity to catch you in a non compliance situation. Was worth it for peace of mind to me. -
I went to see her in 2019 as was having an issue with one eye. A one person clinic and you just que up and wait. She ultimately was able to diagnose a hole in the macula which requires surgery to repair. I was leaving in two weeks so waited until returning home and had that diagnosis confirmed by a specialist with surgery shortly thereafter. While her office and equipment seems basic compared to western clinics she was able to make the correct diagnosis which is a credit to her skills. As for the top Opthmologists the Rutnin Clinic in Bangkok is considered the top eye clinic in Thailand. I did go there with a friend about 10 years ago and they have a large clientel with many from Arab countries who come for eye care. Depending on the severity of your issue they would be worth a visit as well.

There are some shops on the outside of the big market on Theppasit Road selling hats for farm and out door work. I bought some at a shop on right hand side when facing the market from Theppasit road. Don't remember the cost but there were not very expensive.
-
As mentioned by LosLobo, Rutnin in Bangkok is the top eye clinic in Thailand. I took a friend there once and noticed they had a lot of international patients, especially from non-European countries. Worth a visit for a second opinion. Regarding eye surgery I would consider quality and safety over cost as a bad outcome is forever.

We have game cameras in the US for hunting which take pictures and upload via phone providers but seem to be aligned with US companies. Not sure if they would work here or can be adapted for Thailand providers. Moultrie brand which works fine. Uses batteries and uploads every three hours or you can set to instant upload if you want real time pictures. They have other models which do not upload so you can go download from the SD card whenever you want. If used where you live can be daily. Happy with Moultrie products. There are a number of similar brands. Suggest you mount a bit high so that people do not steal or notice them easily.

I purchased a used bike from a reputable shop that does service and repairs and sells used bikes. In that case you can take same day unless they need to do service or make some changes on your behalf. You do need the immigration letter for green book transfer and registration. Note you can drive the bike while the paperwork is being done as it can take a while depending on the original registration of the bike as many come from out of this area. Since the bike has plates, current tax and registration it is not an issue to drive while the paperwork is being processed by the selling dealer.
