  1. I can understand why he did it- to divert Russian troops from the real war in the east. He just failed to understand that Putin isn't an idiot.
  2. I'm guessing, but IMO it's a fight over the women, and probably her in particular. I suspect she had a special guy, and someone didn't like that. Like I said, it was a situation that was going to end in tears. What numptie put a woman like that into that sort of situation? Madness. My opinion, but based on actual experience. We had 2 permanent females on base in summer and 100 guys. It was an interesting time. Remember we are talking about alpha guys.
  3. Then the other people blockade themselves into the module with all the food, and wait for him to get weak from hunger. There is no food in winter, except what is sent down. It's not that cold where they are, so if they take sleeping bags it doesn't matter if he cuts the power. Scientists live outside for months.
  4. Greenpeace IMO tends to go too far. I applied to them to work at their proposed Antarctic base, but during the interview the Greenpeace guy was advocating for really dangerous activities against McMurdo. When I pointed that out to him, rather than accept advice from someone actually been there, he ended the interview and I did not get the job.
  5. ??????? Apart from a spot of insomnia, no one got disoriented while I was there. I enjoyed everything about being there, and I spent most of my time outside. It wasn't till it got below - 30 celcius that it got really cold. Once I acclimatized, I was able to go outside in a track suit, as long as it wasn't windy. Wind is the killer, not the temperature.
  6. That movie had the base armed to the teeth with weapons, which is not reality. Weapons are banned, given the complete absence of threatening species. Even the US icebreakers had to remove their deck guns.
  7. I loved the Antarctic more than any other place I've ever lived in, but some people should never, never, never be allowed to go there. The problem is that the people that they need have to be experts at whatever they do and everyone is highly skilled. Such people are not necessarily wanting to spend a year there, so if push comes to shove, they'll take a less than optimal character. Our leader was one such- a complete Richard Cranium.
  8. That's way less than the first group photo. 3 women and 6 guys I can't think of a better way to cause ructions in an isolated base with no way out. It's not like the space station where everyone is in each others face all the time. Plenty of space on that huge base for a spot of naughtiness, which leads to jealously, which leads to ..... I don't have to spell it out. There have been previous expeditions which suffered from that scenario. The Ice Bird expedition was a classic case of why it's not a good idea for one or two guys to be having happy endings and the rest get to look on bereft of such. Seems they haven't learned much since.
  9. No way it's 10 months. Someone didn't do their research properly. Scott Base is waaaaaay further south and we only had 2 months of total darkness. The sunrises were spectacular.
  10. ?????????????? You mean have security guards down there? That'll fly like a lead balloon. Still doesn't deal with what they do with him- do they have to build a jail too? Whom is going to do his job- the security guard?
  11. Seriously, early warning systems? Does she have shares? Given there are no safe areas to go to, safe areas with food, water and medical care, what are we supposed to do when the early warning system tells us a storm is coming, run down to the beach to see the big waves? "mitigated", LOL. As usual the numpties never say what is needed to "mitigate", or how much it's going to cost US. As usual they never ask us, the people going to pay for it, what we think would be a good idea- only those anointed from above are clever enough to know what to do, even though they haven't actually done much so far. IMO just another scam by rich people to fool the peasants into making them even richer.
  12. 100% correct. If all humans were to vanish tomorrow the planet would be far better off. IMO humans will do nothing till it's too late and then moan about it. That's what we normally do. In any event, there is nothing we can do to stop it, and as long as the population increases rapidly, the end will come sooner. We exceeded Earth's carrying capacity at 3 billion IMO. Short of nature really doing a job on us, or nuclear war, that's not going to change. Sooooo, let the easily fooled carry on driving an expensive battery car, while the other 8 billion drive ICE vehicles and burn the forests to grow hamburgers.
  13. Feel better now? We don't think that, it's corporations who's god is profit that are pumping the s***e into the atmosphere, corporations run by middle aged people. Of course all the posters moaning about it on here would be livid if they couldn't get a plane to their favourite destination, or drive a car and have to take a bus, etc. Hypocrites IMO. So, tell us what you are doing without to stop climate change- not flying, not eating meat grown on cleared forest land, not having children etc?
  14. Apologies, the photo I was looking at ( top of the page ) is from 2014, so I have no idea how many men/ women are there now.
  15. There has been at least 3 movies. Which do you think was best? I only saw the first 2 and liked Kurt Russel version better.
  16. Brainwashed or just ignoring reality? Israel tried to change the terms of the ceasefire, not Hamas. Had stage 2 happened, the hostages would have already been released. Why don't you go and tell all the thousands of Israeli protestors demanding Netanyahu abide by the terms of the ceasefire that they are wrong?
  17. Trump is looking increasingly desperate as he flails about trying to get a win in the US, and failing. Luckily the US has a constitution and federal judges that are not contaminated by the president. Here's to Trump losing, again.
  18. Looks like loser Trump is getting owned by the courts and the loser is hopefully going to see this particular travesty make him look like a fool.
  19. Scandinavians don't arrive via the Darien- fatuous comparison. Given this is a predominantly Thai based forum, a comparison with Thailand is appropriate. The US should learn from Thailand how to deal with illegals.
  20. Cue the plod interrogating everyone. They should have not sent any messages, thrown him off the cliff and claimed it was an accident. Of course with that many people there is no way it wouldn't leak out anyway.
  21. That means nothing if no one is trained. It would turn into a disaster. Assuming he was restrained, it would be very difficult to keep him segregated. No jail cells and he is only there to do a job, which might be a problem if he was an essential worker, like base engineer.
  22. Doors don't have locks. In event of a fire we had minutes to evacuate. A locked door would have resulted in dead people.
  23. I'm here. I do have a life that isn't on AN. I just logged on, and I've replied. I do have to say though, that our pre training did not cover how to deal with bad guys. I guess that back then they assumed some of us would deal with it. No woke people on base. No, we did not have a psychological evaluation before departure.
  24. Fireaxe to the back of the head solves that problem. I guess there are no military trained guys on base, or it wouldn't be a problem. Easiest solution would be him ( I assume it's a him, though I count 8 females in the photo ) wandering off in the night or a white out and falling off the cliff. However, had they done that after their silly call for help, the obvious conclusion would be that it was not an accident. It was a silly call, because in winter no one can hear you scream you are on your own, unless working for a very rich country like the US. All of us ( I wintered over ) knew that if it went bad for us, there was no ambulance service coming. As one with an interest in the psychology of teams in isolated situations, I'm intrigued about the relationship between the 8 women and the 21 men. Luckily we had none overwinter, but the Americans had one female and 100 men. That was "interesting" to say the least. We did have 2 permanent females during summer, and as Spock was won't to say, "fascinating". PS. There were one or two that were lucky to survive the winter on our base ( 11 guys ).
