  1. Suggest to all involved to read the ENTIRE report in full before rebutting selective quotes.

    http://www.hrw.org/

It might make for a more informed and civil debate.

Good suggestion. It's the first article I've seen which not only condemns the government & army, but also clearly the UDD and other protesters.

I assume the suggestion the army torched CWT can be laid to rest now?

  2. "If someone automatically makes the connection between ridiculous ..." at least they are thinking about possible connections rather than inserting head 2 feet under and wondering why it's so dark.

    ...

We're drifting a bit off topic here I'm afraid, but maybe a last remark on semantics will be granted :ermm:

'automatically making a connection' may result in further thinking, but not necessarily. The 'automatic' part suggest a foregone conclusion, something about which there is no need anymore to think about. The 'obvious' which somehow always needs pointing out.

Now I don't want to suggest you should try this, but inserting your head a few feet under seems much more of a conscious action than 'automatically making a connection' ;)

  3. Sure a lot of blather about something we will never know.

Lese M charges can never reveal the actual root cause of the charge to the public, for in revealing it you are committing LM. Like the rest of thaivisa members I take it on faith this charge was made in the fairness, honesty, and vast integrity that characterize the Thai legal and Police organizations.

In line with the above, "a democratic movement called for the LM law to be repealed. The call was made at the office of Red Power magazine at the red-shirt headquarters, Imperial Lad Phrao, in Bangkok. According to Red Power editor Somyos Phrueksakasemsuk, the Democracy Network, made up of groups and individuals supporting the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship, are campaigning to abolish the lèse majesté law, or Article 112 of the Criminal Code, as it has been politically abused."

  4. OK, Jayboy is being a little harsh, but to be honest comments like "what has the border dispute got to do with the current politics"?, are pretty staggering. It's like saying what's the connection between handing out computers to students and vote-buying?

If someone cannot make the connection between ridiculous, unnecessary border squabbles and attempts to influence/delay/cancel upcoming elections due to a fear of who might win, that person has to be a candidate for the George Bush Stunning Levels of Perception Award 2011.

If someone automatically makes the connection between ridiculous ...

BTW with that ? at the end, should it be 'it's like "asking what's the connection ... vote- buying ?"'

  5. My source of information is of course the Robert Amsterdam site on Thailand. Always good for some sound bites, clips, 'solid' government bashing. Next I depends on k. Prompong as PTP spokesman and the lovable k. Jatuporn. With all that I don't need to think too much, k. Thaksin will do that for me :)

  6. ...

Alternatively rubl could have come across as smug and condescending "a la" ( this is me being ironic here - couldn't find a smiley for ironic)

    ...

I prefer rubls approach even if I don't agree with him often..........

Smug as in self-satisfied, complacent ? Condescending as in patronizing, kind to inferiors ? Me, the wondering type ?

My dear chap, as a genuine Dutch uncle I'm just providing the well-meaning, unwanted advice you should not only be bound to expect, but almost be entitled to by law ;)

  7. Please excuse me if I'm a bit late joining this discussion. Holiday, I was in soi Cowboy for a moment, till they suddenly had to close about 2AM.

So red-shirt radio stations raided, closed ? I must admit I didn't tune in for months now. After watching PTV broadcasts last year, with lots of 'claiming in a loud voice' I tried to stay away from it all.

To be fair, if someone could tell me the frequencies to listen to yellow-shirt broadcasts I would give it a try and if necessary tell the police to shut them down :ermm:

  8. VAT cut will only be profitable to high incomes....no need to say that a reduction of 2 points is only interesting if you buy cars...high ended products....no need to say who will be happy

Assuming VAT is put on daily necessities a reduction will help the poor and common people. A higher VAT could be put on luxury items.

  9. This man is an embarrassment. He was never elected, but shamelessly accepted power, because of his links with the army & yellows. He has ruled ineffectively for 2 1/2 years and now he is going to be voted out. Thankfully!

    There we go again :(

    K. Abhisit is an elected MP who was elected by other MP's to be the PM. Just like the late k. Samak and k. Somchai before him. As PM he had to lead this country through the global economical crisis and the red-shirt protests.

He may not return but not because people vote him out, it would be 'not voted in'

Wait and see, two months at the most :)

  10. ^ ^ Not included in the above broadcast is whether foreign ex-pats living in Thailand are eligible to enlist.

The use of foreign 'mercenaries' would be frown upon by UN, ICJ and other international organizations. Still some here may like to be there if I understand some posts on the Thai-Cambodian border skirmish ;)

  11. It's about revolutionary context. And for the proposed extensions beyond them.

It's just lefty agitprop nonsense which is ignored - or at least tolerated - in most civilised democratic countries (ie excepting North Korea, China etc) just as is the reactionary cheerleading for repression which others are associated.

In the examples you give (actually pretty harmless anyway) there's actually nothing directly linking Somyos although as usual you have found him guilty in advance.

    K. Somyos as editor / publisher can be directly linked and made responsable for the contents of the magazine he publishes.

As for the 'lefty agitprop nonsense which is ignored' you probably mean 'which should be ignored' even if it's published in the Voice of Taksin :ermm:

  12. I was told in another thread that this is what is known as "ironic speculation" - mind you I was also told by the same poster that my viewpoint was, "absolute propaganda". It's yer double standards, innit!:coffee1:

Just to clarify a wee bit, another poster described my post in another thread as 'ironic speculation' and PPD's post as 'absolute propaganda' ( ).

I merely observe that opinions differ ;)

    ( )

  13. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) arrested Somyos after being notified by border officers at Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaew province that Somyos was leading some 30 or so red shirts on a fund-raising tour for the magazine to Angkor Wat.

    This needs some explanation.

    - did some 30 red-shirts pay to have a tour to Angkor Wat?

    - will funds be raised in Cambodia?

    - remember when a few years ago a Thai actress or singer suggested 'Angkor Wat is Thai' and a few buildings in Phnom Penh were torched. What does k. Somyos think he's doing? Trying to incite a full scale war?

Your response, or least the logic of it, also need some explanataion. How did you get from to OP of a fund-raising tour for the magazine to Angkor Wat to trying to incite full scale war?

Why you think I started with 'this needs some explanation'. A red-shirts fund-raising tour to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Till now no further information provided. May I speculate a bit and wonder a lot more? May I, please Mr. Rreddin ?

  14. Yep,buy them votes mister, give em a 25% rise, then tax them 30%more after the election... .

Assume THB 300 per day, you get to about 110,000 per year. With some standard deductions and the tax free bracket of 100,000 that means still no need to pay taxes :)

What to do, what to do

  15. Visiting Ankor Wat and cheering on the Cambodian Army no doubt.

While I am no fan of the LM law, if anyone is guilty of it it is Somyos, with his glorification of such regicides as Cromwell and Lenin and his repeated references to the fates of the Romanovs and the Nepalese royal family.

Surely, even in these twisted times, references to Lenin and Cromwell do not constitute LM and if they do, what hope is there...........????

Red Shirt publications often feature articles about historical revolutions against monarchies. Pure coincidence of course, but somehow it suggests ........
