  1. Anyone who 'agonizes' over bars not legally being able to serve alcohol for 24 hours should probably see a doctor. Just nonsense that the author made up, based on no facts at all.
  2. But only for five days a year, the five religious holidays. On all the other days, no problem, despite abstaining being one of the Five Precepts. Anyone able to explain the logic of that hypocrisy? Religious nonsense.
  3. Then why didn't it say that? Bizarre :) Bizarre, and now corrected.
  4. Didn't you read 'family audience '. CHILDREN Edited 50 minutes ago by SAFETY FIRST I suppose it's a cultural thing. We in the west see sex as sordid and not to be spoken of in polite company, a relic of the Victorian era, whereas many other nations and cultures often see sex as a normal part of life. Well, it is, isn't it.
  5. Then why didn't it say that? Bizarre :)
  6. And jailed for assault. But this happens over and over and over again in Thailand. Part of the culture.
  7. In Thailand it is always, always someone else's fault. It is impossible for them to take responsibility for anything. It's part of the culture. In my nearly three decades here I have seen it happen only once, when a dog ran out from a house and bit me and the owner took me to a clinic and paid the bill.
  8. Is this a new phrase that doesn't mean what it says? It's hard to keep up with changing language, such as bad now meaning good, wicked also meaning good, and so on. Words meaning the opposite of what they used to. Who even begins these changes?
  9. How do you know that? The thief could have said it was his phone that he wanted to sell. I doubt that, instead, he asked if they would buy this phone he'd stolen.
  10. I've never understood why a natural act that everyone does during their life (and hopefully hundreds of times) is considered 'shocking'. And, while on the subject, we always say 'slept with' instead of had sex with. We're a strange race.
  11. Same thing happened at the airport a few months back. Whenever anyone I know tells me they are thinking of coming to Thailand I tell them to avoid Phuket.
  12. They have also summoned the neighbour from room nine for questioning to determine if he was behind the attack. Yet again, the police invite a suspect to pop along to the station when he has the time, instead of doing what police everywhere else do and going out to arrest him.
  13. suspend without bribes would really be painful.... pay is just chump change That is what an inactive post is. But it hasn't reached that stage yet in this case.
  14. She was consistently good throughout the competition, which is rare. Most have a bad day along the way but scrape through. Some of the things these contestants (not just her) produce are incredible. I'd quite like to have been a chef myself, but spending a couple of hours to produce something that is eaten in 10 minutes?
  15. Yes. Her story is hardly unique. But so many Thais live in their own little bubble and have no idea what goes on outside of it.
  16. That has never worked, has it. They protest with mobile phone lights and rubber ducks and the army responds with tear gas, tanks and guns. Closing down the airports and the ports and sticking it out no matter what is probably the only way to get change. Setting up platforms on traffic intersections will not.
  17. Thailand has a corrupt police force, corrupt local government (hence this report), corrupt immigration officers, corrupt everything, really. In what way isn't it a third world country? A few tall, shiny glass buildings in Bangkok don't change that. As long as people are allowed to operate with impunity, not only in Phuket, with absolutely no action by the authorities and sometimes even assisted by them, then Thailand will remain a third world country.
  18. Doesn't leave you with much choice left. I once asked a Chinese colleague, in my diplomatic way, why so many products from China are such cr*p, and he was surprised. He'd had no problems with what he bought there. I think it's another example of Thailand selling the lowest quality of goods from there for the lowest price, and that quality goods are available in China for a higher price. It's like the Chinese tourists that Thailand attracts - bottom of the barrel, and the better quality ones go elsewhere.
  19. Gorgonzola, perhaps? My father loved it but it stank out the pantry. This was in the 50s/early 60s when no-one in the UK had a fridge. That put me off it for life. A good strong cheddar suits me.
  20. Plastic 'cheese' is okay to have on a burger, but not for anything else. As for the price of real cheese, yes, it's expensive as are other quality imported foods. You want western standard, you pay a western price. The good thing about Thailand is you have the option of paying that, or 80% less for local produce.
  21. What about the yellow shirts who took over the airport?
  22. It is truly extraordinary how, every day, we read of drivers going into power poles. Mini vans, motorcycles, cars, lorries. Anyone. I can only assume they're magnetic.
  23. Facebook allows anyone to advertise on the platform with no checks whatsoever. I was caught out once but PayPal got my money back for me. Never again.
