From one of the linked articles: According to Jonathan, he was walking back to the condo sometime in the afternoon when he suddenly fell into an uncovered drain into the sewer. However hard he tried, he couldn’t climb out. I'm amazed it doesn't happen more often. One of the first things you learn here is never to step on any kind of drain cover. In this case it didn't even have one. Not unusual in Safety First Thailand. He's American so maybe he'll sue someone and everyone will deny all responsibility for everything. Also not unusual.

I've been here for 27 years and can't recall ever experiencing common sense. It is remarkable how a society can develop and exist without it, but ... My favourite tale, from years ago, is when a shopkeeper refused to sell me today's Bangkok Post because he hasn't sold out of yesterday's yet. It is impossible to communicate with these people.

Maybe they travel the world to experience things in addition to their comfort food from back home?

I agree that British restaurants are a rarity. I do know that there are quite a number of traditional English food restaurants in London though. Rules is one. Simpson's in the Strand is another. I have family there who even frequented a place in Spitalfields Market called The English Restaurant, but it appears from their website they are now having an identity crisis, with one name for the site and another name on the photo of the restaurant.

I don't recall anything like the Thai immigration hassles when I got my new UK passport. All very straight-forward, apart from a large queue to use the lift to the passport office. The two visits is a hassle as they refuse to mail passports (why?), but in my case they coincided with trips I was making to Bangkok anyway.

Thai senators come under pressure over PM vote
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What happens in Thailand affects everyone, not just Thais. We all live here. And that is why we comment. Not too difficult to understand, surely. Yet you expect us here to shut up and not comment on things that affect us? Okay. -
Thai senators come under pressure over PM vote
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Isn't that the reason his party has been elected? To upset the establishment. Yet the senators still don't get that they are yesterday's people, and they still want to retain the old order. -
You've described why I avoid people, much of the time.

Despite his background as a general contractor in construction, Masters’ suggestions for a simple and cost-effective solution were dismissed. Instead, the civil works officer advised Masters to alter the gradient of his driveway at his own expense. How typically Thai. No responsibility, no interest in repairing their damage. Your house, you sort it out. Many years ago my in-laws lost the entire ground floor of their house after dirt roads in the village were tarmacked and it raised the road height. Of course, as anyone with a brain larger than that of a Thai, and there are many, would have known that when the rains came the yard would be flooded, and that destroyed the house and it returned to its previous status as a place on stilts. I offered to get them a lawyer to fight for compensation, but they weren't interested. Amazing Thailand - Land of Apathy. Similar to the neighbours of the OP?

Facebook also allows scammers to advertise unchecked. Every day I see ads for things that are being sold at 10% of the normal price. Anyone with half a brain knows it's too good to be true, but there are always many dozens of people responding by asking for details. I bought one item a while ago, it was not as advertised and PayPal got me my money back. I reported to FB who responded with their usual useless 'we endeavor to ..."

Thai woman escapes abusive mafia ex-boyfriend
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
I think it's often a primeval urge. They want a macho-man and then find out it's more than they can handle. It happens so often, women choosing an obvious low-life, that I can think of no other explanation. Either that, or they're as dumb as f***. -
And whose fault is that! They themselves make what would be not much more than a formality in most other countries into a huge form-filling exercise. Especially after being granted the first extension. I've just had to 'prove myself' again with 15 steps including a home visit despite being married for 32 years, after I needed to let my previous extensions slide for a few weeks due to complicated travel arrangements. If they don't like it then they should maybe change their draconian rules. And abolish the pointless 90 day report at the same time.

Road Rage Incident Leads to Shooting, Leaving One Injured in Bangkok
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Note that the gunman's car had no license plate. Which is illegal. But, as usual, no-one cares. Certainly not the police. -
The OP asked about Thai beef. Wagyu beef is Japanese. But yes, it is very good. Just not Thai.
-
I believe it's what they're fed on. Pork can be tough too. Thais don't know their meat is of such low quality as they have no experience of anything else - unless they go and pay western prices for western quality at Tops.

Everyone is writing as if the result is a done deal. It isn't. From an earlier Webfact report: The key question now is the fate of both the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties which are facing disturbing probes by the Election Commission and the attitude of the Thai Senate or upper house which still retains 250 votes in the selection of the next prime minister when parliament convenes in the coming months.

Road Rage Incident Leads to Shooting, Leaving One Injured in Bangkok
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
A very dangerous practise, as you cannot hear emergency vehicles, or someone honking legitimately to warn you. Totally agree. I tried wearing headphones once while 'cruising' in the USA. Lasted less than five minutes. I very quickly realised that you need to have all your senses working, not just your eyes when driving. -

Read the report again. The victim was 18. The gunman is unknown. -
And his overturning a democratically elected government to seize power for himself? Did any journalist ask him? And did he threaten to tape their mouth shut for asking inconvenient questions?
