  1. Most of what you write is exactly what we have so many times read in this site about Thai hoodlums. Same applies to them fleeing the scene, But when standards are so low in Thailand this kind of scum is drawn to the country like flies to s***. Almost daily stories about the riff-raff that rolls up on these shores. To any Singapore-based members - do they show up there too? I think I know the answer.
  2. Bless..... Yes. It's not really up to him, is it. He doesn't decide if he will serve the sentence handed down, whether it was politically motivated or not. Incredible arrogance.
  3. A few years ago a top cop said they would stop, but well, you know..... A bit like another top cop saying foreigners carrying a photocopy of their passport info is okay while other cops demand the passport. Rules mean nothing in Thailand. Everyone, including the police, just do whatever they want. It's deeply ingrained into the culture.
  4. Does it really matter if a Thai has a genuine license or a fake one? In many cases the driving standard would be exactly the same.
  5. They can also defy physics. One even sailed his car through the top of a tree opposite my house. Exceptional talent.
  6. That's called learning from others. We used to ask friends or colleagues about a place they'd been to, but now there is a wider audience and word travels further. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it even warns people not to go to Phuket because they'd have to deal with the taxi hoodlums (I refuse to call small-time crooks mafia). As for adverts, I'm largely okay with that because it is still my decision whether I buy or not. And it might even suggest something I've been wondering where to get it. And as far as the idiot who is the subject of this thread goes, he needs to be locked up for causing criminal damage and distress to the owners of the property he damaged for fun. And he needs to have his social media account blocked - after he films himself being taken to a police cell.
  7. It's just one of the 'delights' of living in a country where there is so much bureaucracy and so many rules that no-one actually knows what is needed. I saw my local IO consulting his rule book and it had hundreds of pages. I used to think the IOs were being difficult, but now I think often it's just that they are ignorant of their rules. Same as your True experience. The person who said no didn't know, whereas the engineer who would do the job did know. Same happens in banks when they give you the "Cannot". Ask, politely, to speak with someone else and you'll often get a different answer. You have to accept that many Thais are not very bright and they lack initiative. Their IQ level is reported as 88, whereas in nearby Singapore which has a functional education system it is 105.
  8. Reading the headlines we are offered each day is like Groundhog Day. Mini-van crashes, many injured. Speeding driver hits power pole, several killed. Monks behaving badly. Rejected man assaults/kills former partner. And record tourist arrivals expected.
  9. They were dancing on the tables and were abusive and refused to leave. A good thing the party were not a tooled-up group of law enforcement officers. We know how that would have ended.
  10. Nice that the driver was severely injured. He might have learned a lesson. Might have.
  11. But but but I want it!!! Just as a child would act.
  12. Reminds me of someone I heard of who bought a new car to leave on her driveway to impress the neighbours. She didn't know how to drive it though so never actually used it except to gain face. So many Thais have the mentality of a child.
  13. It is? Really? A pity the monks don't do that. I read a story today of 80 million baht and gold bars buried (read: hidden) behind a temple, found during an investigation of a monk stealing millions in donations for himself. https://aseannow.com/topic/1294395-80-million-baht-cash-found-buried-at-buddhist-temple-in-thailand/#comment-18072473
  14. Anyone that donates money to a temple is an idiot. So many stories over the years of monks acting like criminals (because, as mentioned above, often they are) and mis-using funds or indulging in other un-Buddhist behaviour. How Thailand gets away with calling itself a Buddhist nation is beyond me. It isn't even close.
  15. True, lets wait for the autopsy report. And we'll never be told what it says, will we. Never any follow-up.
  16. Thinking there might be a pothole involved is very, very British as the number of them in the UK is a national and long-standing scandal. So it's natural that his sister might think that.
  17. They just like to show tourists the real Thailand, as opposed to the TAT Land Of Smiles, so they have a story they can take home and tell all their family and friends as well as post around the world on social media. All part of the Thai Experience.
  18. How about Summer Storms Forecast, hmm? No nationality needed as they affect everyone. I think my headline is better than your suggested headlines, but I'm sure you disagree. Some people like to see things done correctly and that's the way I was brought up and was taught, while others don't give a rat's fart. I don't really care what you think. I simply mentioned that stating a particular nationality, and only one, is improper and unnecessary. My work is dealing with language and ensuring accuracy at all times, but I accept that standard doesn't matter to most. If you or anyone else is happy with lower standards, fine. But there is no need to come on here criticising me for pointing out what was a poorly written headline.
  19. its amazing what kind of offence you can find when you are looking really hard for it, get over yourself It is, as so often, poor journalism. Some are clearly ok with that. Others have higher standards.
  20. What a strange headline. THAIS are warned. No-one else? The weather app I get with Windows has for the past two weeks shown cooler weather and cloud with rain on some days, ongoing as from today. And it's spot on. Ready to enjoy the temperature plunging from the high 30s or above to the lower 30s.
  21. Interesting to read all the outraged comments and how it sounds the death knell for Thai tourism (again), But does anyone, really, seriously believe it will make the slightest difference and that people will refuse to come to Thailand because of it? Really?
  22. I'm a dinosaur and if I want restaurant food I go out to the restaurant. I don't have to fiddle around/fight with an app and hope the food arrives as ordered (when it doesn't in a restaurant it's easy to correct it - try doing that with a driver). I also know it will be hot, and if it isn't then see above. Sometimes, it's good being old. Makes life simple and easy instead of gambling with new world stuff. Like having to use a screen to order in McDonalds as I've done at DM airport in Bangkok. Takes 20 times longer than it used to by just going to the counter and saying what you want. Jeez. That's progress?
  23. Making it illegal for crowds to form has never resulted in crowds not forming. What caused the most recent protests to end was that they had absolutely zero effect, as you can't fight water cannons with mobile phone lights and rubber ducks. The government knew it just had to wait out the storm. Happens everywhere. Let's see what happens in Paris next.
  24. I agree. I mean, we've only been married for 32 years, but they treat me as if I've just come over here last month to marry a local so that I could live in their self-proclaimed paradise on Earth. As for the neighbours, they don't mind crossing the road to see the IOs. Probably makes their day more exciting. Someone different to natter with. I can see that it might be a problem for others.
