  1. A friend of mine here died in what I think were suspicious circumstances. He was elderly and his wife simply wanted to get rid of him, I think. She visited him only once during the week he was in hospital, crying out in agony before he died. I suspected poisoning after he survived 'falling down the stairs' at home, and the (state) hospital claimed he was tested for poisons. Which I very much doubt, and for which poisons anyway?
  2. The Thai mentality often is that the person is dead, nothing can be done about it now so let's move on. Saves taking responsibility, saves having to work to investigate thoroughly. It's their way of thinking and in a way it makes sense (different culture, different attitude to death) but it can, as we see, have consequences.
  3. And her English still leaves something to be desired. Many errors that Thais regularly make.
  4. Not really, just locations to go and pay for a new licence. A nonsense post. There are driving schools in Thailand. My wife used one in Bangkok and is a near-perfect driver. It constantly amazes me how good she is. The idiots who can't drive probably learnt how to drive from cousin Somchai, who had no idea himself how to drive properly.
  5. I think that it is more likely that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel BEFORE his minivan ploughed into a roadside guardrail. More great Thai reporting.
  6. That's a good thing. Because you could write it another way and say being pregnant will condemn her to spending the rest of her life enjoying the delights of a Thai jail. A much better punishment. At the same time it raises an interesting point. There are those who say that executing someone is inhumane, but those same people would see spending 20-30 years in a squalid jail as a humane alternative.
  7. Yes, I was misinformed. Two companies own pretty much all the outlets in Thailand (Lotus's, Makro, Big C, 7-Eleven, CP Fresh) though.
  8. And we'll never know, will we, because we never get an update unless it's about a serial killer or a particularly crooked policeman.
  9. This is one of the reasons why, when friends overseas have asked me whether Thais drive on the left or right I answer "Yes."
  10. I don't know about you, but I've been to plenty of weddings in my native UK and not one person got shot.
  11. The only reason legal casinos are not allowed to operate in Thailand is because it would hurt the profits of the illegal ones operated by 'untouchables'. Notice how the news a few months ago about possibly opening up casinos in Thailand has all gone quiet?
  12. They point to finding nothing and claim their raids are working, rather than admitting that there was nothing to find to begin with.
  13. Check on-line for Ritter chocolate. Lazada, perhaps. Some sell it at a reasonable price. Great stuff.
  14. An interesting post and, regarding the quote, I think much of the explosive behaviour is because every Thai has to know their place in society and not stray from it. Eventually the frustration and anger builds and then they erupt like a volcano. It's a very unstable society, just like a volcano that could erupt at any moment and without warning.
  15. Your local government hospital is a good starting point.
  16. Bearing in mind that BigC and Lotus's have the same owner and something like 84% of the market (which the monopolies office decided was not a monopoly, no doubt after incentives were handed out), I would doubt very much that the company is struggling. They can charge customers whatever they like as there are few other places they can shop. They might be running down certain BigC branches if there is a Lotus's nearby, as happened in my area.
  17. I suppose she could plead insanity. No normal person becomes a serial killer.
  18. A friend of mine died here and I strongly suspect his wife was behind it. I got his daughter who is half-Thai and lives in London to ask the hospital to check for poison and they said they do as a matter of routine (?) but found nothing. In other words, they couldn't be bothered.
  19. Life in jail will be far more of a punishment.
  20. My little village hospital is always open, 24 hours, and if necessary they consult a doctor on-line after asking relevant questions. Quite impressive.
  21. Election promotions.... Does that matter, if prices fall? Every government in the world makes promises before elections. May starts today so the reduction is in place from now.
  22. One of the weirdest questions I've ever seen on this site.
  23. The government has announced lower prices from May until, I think, September before another review.
  24. You make a good point about solar power, but at the same time I'm not aware of any tropical country that has invested massively in it. Very odd. I am ready to be educated to the contrary, though.
