  1. In related news, as The Thaiger would say, a colleague got stuck in his shower at a hotel in Dubai. The door just wouldn't open. He had his Do Not Disturb light on and could have been trapped there for a day or more, but eventually he managed to climb out over the top. Not an experience I'd want to go through. In a Thai hotel there's a chance he could have smashed the door, I suppose.
  2. And if there were they wouldn't be enforced.
  3. How on Earth is a man dying due to a bathroom accident 'related' to the murder of two backpackers? How far down can The Thaiger take us? It's like their writers live on a different planet.
  4. Something that Thais are highly skilled at is making a mountain out of a molehill. The slightest thing can be blown up out of all proportion. Such as the reaction and demonstration by hundreds over someone hitting someone in the back (a reaction generated only because he was a foreigner. It would have been entirely different if he was Thai). The arrogant Swiss was at fault, but you say "Oi" and move on. If you put it out on social media then don't complain at the attention that you have generated causes you.
  5. Exactly my thoughts. She clearly is unable to deal with stress so should not be allowed anywhere near a hospital. Who knows how she might crack under the strain.
  6. If you read the comment that I commented on, you will see that it referred to the machete wielding thug, not the taxi driver/German-Austrian.
  7. Well, you offered no other solution. Which is.... over to you.
  8. Yet in this case it appears to be a German liable to kill you over being asked not to smoke in another person's vehicle! You think the German/Austrian would have killed the driver?
  9. The majority of the news AN gives us is sourced from The Thaiger. The majority. So, in answer to your question, no. But the quality of the 'journalism' from The Thaiger, compared to other sources we are given, is appalling (I'm writing as a journalist of 40+ years). The best coverage by far is found in Thai Enquirer.
  10. And this was a perfect example of why you should never, ever, for any reason get into an argument with a Thai. They are liable to kill you over the smallest thing - such as asking you to not smoke in a particular area.
  11. I agree. And yet look at the trouble that abuse on social media generates. People sometimes suffer mental health problems and in extreme cases kill themselves over it. After they have given total strangers their contact info. Would we give out our phone number to those we don't know and trust? No. Yet millions do give out such personal information and then get upset when nutters contact them. Any person in the spotlight deserves all they get for their naivety. Those with half a brain use a name that no-one could guess was them and give that to only those they trust, not the whole world. As is the Thai version of Buddhism.
  12. Just another quality tourist. Nothing to see here. Move on.
  13. Telling a passenger that he isn't allowed to smoke in his taxi is a scam?
  14. It's The Thaiger. Better get used to it as the overwhelming news source for AN. We are offered their trash several times a day.
  15. It does indeed depend on the family. I married after knowing her for 14 days. Decided on Friday, married on Monday. No dowry was mentioned. That was 33 years ago. No member has ever asked for money, although I've lent some over time and always got it back as agreed.
  16. The last the rest of us heard was that he had handed himself in. Deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, reported to the enquiry officer at Taopoon police station on Tuesday afternoon, to acknowledge the money laundering charges filed against him. He was granted bail after about four hours of questioning.
  17. The thing is, they might not have known. I'd guess that most countries are not paranoid about employing foreigners. I once stepped in to DJ at a place in Finland when the regular DJ broke his arm. There were no rules there about having to apply for a permit or face arrest because I was threatening the livelihood of locals. The usual mountain out of a molehill reaction that Thais excel so well at.
  18. It generates clicks and that's all that matters, bear in mind this is a commercial enterprise not here only for your benefit. I thought that's what the adverts were for, not inaccurate writing.
  19. The culture being that it is perfectly acceptable to sell your daughter to whoever wants to marry her.
  20. Yes. Me too. But we are not Thai, nor 16 years old. They have absolutely no concept of danger.
  21. He wasn't turning FROM a soi. He was turning INTO a soi. And no doubt the kid on the bike was overtaking on the inside, and maybe the lorry driver didn't signal or the kid ignored it. All are very common here, so we can take our pick. Maybe all three apply.
  22. I suppose sacking the errant staff was out of the question? No, let's resort to criminal assault and then claim the staff wanted her to do it.
  23. She doesn't even try to: The restaurant owner, 33 year old Yuwadee Boonsarn, later clarified the situation with several media outlets. Yuwadee clarified that beatings were the prescribed punishment for employees who arrived late to work. Just more savagery in the land of smiles.
