Phuket Governor Addresses Rumors in Swiss Expat Alleged Assault Case
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
And if it had been a Thai that kicked her none of those would have been involved as she would probably not have demanded that he be charged. Certainly, it would not have involved the Governor. -
Some info about the victim would be interesting. She was living in one of the most expensive places in London.

Ripping up Beach Road Walkway After the New Tiles are Laid
Bangkok Barry replied to Banana7's topic in Pattaya
The OP has to realise that the work on Beach Road is a rich local tradition, rich in that it has provided income for many over several decades. If it isn't the promenade, it's the constant replenishing of sand which gets washed out to sea. TAT should promote Beach Road as one of the wonders of the world, a job that is never finished, constantly renewed. They could even set up viewing platforms for tourists to see the work in progress. For a fee, of curse. -
I get my tea from Ireland. For ages I wanted to try Barry's tea - for obvious reasons (see my name). One day when I checked their website they had a nice anniversary tin, so I ordered. I get their black-boxed Classic blend (now says Masterblend on my latest box), 80 bags for less than 9 Euros including delivery, which takes about 10 days or so. Now I'll say something that will draw scorn and insults, The tea is so strong that I use the bag twice, and it's still strong. It's fine for me, so keep any insults to yourself, please.

Lipton is the tea equivalent of McDonalds. Available everywhere but not that good.

An interesting exercise for you, I guess. The problem I used to find when I booked flights with a third party was, if I had to change it, I had to contact that third party. This could be difficult if I was in a different country at the time, especially if it was urgent.

Why was this waste of space allowed to walk the streets. He has proved over and over again that he cannot be a member of society, that he is a danger to others, yet they let him walk free over and over again. Insanity is.... -
Thaksin Shinawatra’s ‘secret’ health scandal
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why is this still in the news? Everyone knows the entire situation is corrupt and Thaksin is nowhere near as sick as those who suck up to him say he is. No-one is fooled by the play-acting, everyone knows the truth, so why keep bringing people out who pretend otherwise. No-one believes them. -
Thai doctor offered bribe to drop lawsuit in Swiss scandal

And what is 'real justice' for kicking someone? She wasn't injured, and most people would have shouted in protest at him and moved on. But he was a foreigner so there was an opportunity to milk the situation and blow it up out of all proportion. So she spread it on social media, complained when she became 'stressed' when it received the attention she wanted, and now she's like a dog with a bone and won't let go. Now, and all along, she's just being vindictive. Anyone who thinks otherwise, would any of us act the way she has in our own country. I very much doubt it. We absolutely would not get the PM's office involved. I am not supporting the arrogant bully in any way, and we all know how 'justice' works in Thailand (who has the biggest wallet wins). But you know and I know that if it was a Thai who kicked her, we would have heard nothing about it. Maybe now she can enjoy the 'fairness' of her country's corrupt justice system. Seems that it's already begun. The system is unfair, but so was her decision to pick a fight with someone she thought was fair game as he was a foreigner. She made a mountain out of a mole hill, something very common in Thailand where common sense is absent. -

The bill was 'around 1000 baht', his wife says he 'gets enraged' after six beers, we can assume that she had a drink or three too, so 1,000 baht seems to be reasonable. So your speculation doesn't really hold water, does it. -
Something that seems to pass people by is that, guilty or not, the man has absolutely no class. He is an ignorant (comparing himself to Nelson Mandella the last idiocy) loud-mouthed tasteless American who is interested only in himself and no-one and nothing else. I've posted this before but it's worth putting up again, because it sums him up perfectly: Someone asked "Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?" Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England, wrote this magnificent response: "A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief. Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty. Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down. So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: * Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are. * You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man. This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of <deleted>. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: 'My God… what… have… I… created? If being a <deleted> was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

It's a strange custom, isn't it. Wide open to misuse, which no doubt is why some bars embrace the system. In the real world you pay for each drink as it's served, but Thailand always has to be different. -

Like everything in Thailand, it will probably be short-lived and they'll move on to something else. Hopefully. They might even take a moment to reflect on why Thailand manages to attract so much foreign trash. Do foreigners act the same way in many of the neighbouring countries? I'm sure there are some who contribute this site from elsewhere in the region could fill us in. Meanwhile, look in the mirror, Thailand. -

Maybe. Such is the deep-rooted culture - and reputation of Thailand worldwide - that if a foreigner is with a Thai lady then there's a pretty good chance that she's a 'public relations worker'. Especially at 2 in the morning. That attitude justifiably annoys my wife, but that is simply the way Thais are thought of by many. Including hotel security staff, who more than once have challenged my wife when we have returned from an evening out. -
I found that out the hard way. Thought I needed new glasses, was 'tested' in the Top shop and progressives were ordered for 20,000 baht. They made no difference. Advised on an AN thread I started to get checked at a hospital and found that I had cataracts. Had one done, the other will follow. Totally wasted that 20,000.
