Immigration April Holiday Closures
Bangkok Barry replied to george's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Agreed. How can they accuse you of being on overstay when their office is closed? I was once given a weekend day to do my 90-day report. The IO even took my passport back and crossed out the date it showed and changed it to when they were closed. the mind boggles. -
Air India sacks pilot for boozy flight from Phuket
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Shouldn't tests be conducted before a flight, rather than after? That's what happens in the real world but not, it seems, in Phuket. -
New tax laws
Bangkok Barry replied to superal's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I am exempt form UK tax as my pensions are below the taxable level. So I would have no such proof of tax paid as I haven't paid any. That'll confuse them, because all farangs are rich so I must have paid tax. -

Maybe when you apply for your next extension? I'm sure that some will bring it up, even if it is irrelevant to your application. -
NY judge issues gag order on Trump in hush money trial
Bangkok Barry replied to Social Media's topic in World News
If he is convicted everyone knows how each juror voted. That's the threat. Are you saying that in the USA the name of each juror and how they voted is made public, so that they can be tracked down and 'dealt with' by aggrieved parties? Really? -
NY judge issues gag order on Trump in hush money trial

I don't think you understand the jury system. No-one knows who voted for what, outside of the jury room. Not even the judge. -

Maybe being shot was karma for him doing something bad 100 years ago. Perhaps the Lumpini police in Bangkok can explain it to him if the Phuket police can't. -
Thai lawyer uncovers police-linked bribery network
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The public don't care. They expect it, if it doesn't directly involve them then they have no interest in it, and if it does concern them directly then they are resigned to it being one of the privileges of living in the self-proclaimed greatest country on Earth. -
Pickpockets theft of Norwegian-Thai couple was karma, say cops
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Normally the police don't explain why they do nothing when a crime is reported. Now we have an interesting insight as to why that is. The crime is always your own fault so there is no need for an investigation. Unless the perpetrator is a foreigner, of course. -

I guess you were unable to understand what you read, if you bothered to read the article at all. At least you're consistent. -

There was one day I tried to buy the BP and the shop owner wouldn't let me buy it as he hadn't sold out of yesterdays yet. Just one of those TIT moments, as Trink would say.

I know Stick well and he has always written his own column. There was a short period when he was 'cyberly stalked' by a notstickmanbangkok site during which he stood back a bit, but he was tracked down by Stick and he fled the country (not only because of his on-line harassment of Stick, as far as I remember). As for the look of the site, at one stage he did think of changing it but reader opinions were divided on whether he should do so, so he didn't. For several years now he has been writing from his native New Zealand, largely gathering info from his contacts while making occasional visits back to gather material in person. It's a decent read, but sometimes too reliant on photo lead articles.
-
Different world then. Look at what happened at the BBC, for example. To me, his column was a must read, along with the weekly Data Post section. I saw him once when I visited the BP building, but didn't speak with him. These days, and for the past 20 years, I suppose you could say that Stickman has replaced him.

Cataract Operation - Good to know information?
Bangkok Barry replied to ravip's topic in Health and Medicine
I wish mt visit to Thailand's Top glasses chain had done the same instead of selling me a useless pair. Clearly didn't have a clue, or they didn't care when there was 20,000 to be made. -

Cataract Operation - Good to know information?
Bangkok Barry replied to ravip's topic in Health and Medicine
I just had mine done on Sunday and the difference is astonishing. Got to get used now to things having so much more colour and being so bright. Someone said on the previous thread on cataracts that I started that it was like changing from a 40-watt bulb to a 100-watt, and that is the best description I've seen. And the op was completely painless. After, they also put a drop in my 'good' eye which left my sight in it like looking through frosted glass, and my pupil nearly filling the eye. It was also quite painful, but by the morning it was okay. Still not entirely sure why they did that, despite asking the doctor. Retina was pretty much all I got back. This morning, we had an address on what precautions to use, dos and don'ts etc that lasted nearly an hour. I've often noticed that Thias can take an hour to say what we would say in 10 minutes, and my wife's translation pretty much confirmed that. They required an overnight stay and there wasn't really an opportunity to get out of it. I was told to ask the doctor, who was one of the rudest people I've met and who said a total of six words to me. He certainly didn't invite conversation, but to be fair he was working as if we were on a conveyor belt. I was number 13 and there were at least three after me. The stay wasn't too bad though. With no appointment system I was there from 10.30am and the surgery wasn't completed until 6.30pm, and with the aforementioned frosted glass vision I had a boring evening. The room was supposed to be 1700, but I wasn't charged and I'm still not sure why. The op was 25,000 with three meals of very limited appeal, and free dark glasses that broke in less than 30 minutes. Having previously completely wasted 20,000 on a new pair of glasses which made no difference to my sight, prompting me to get a hospital test, I now bought a pair for reading for 100. But I've written this without with no problem. Next visit is on the 31st and I'll probably get the second eye done in a month. -
Cataract Operation - Good to know information?
Bangkok Barry replied to ravip's topic in Health and Medicine
You might find this thread that I began a couple of weeks ago useful. I plan on having the first eye done tomorrow. I was told 25,000 each eye at my nearby-ish private hospital and 20,000 plus 5,000 'tip' demanded by a doctor at the government hospital. They tell me an overnight stay is needed but I'll argue against that to return the next day to be checked. I'll take an overnight bag containing essentials such as my laptop if they insist otherwise no op. From all that I've read, the procedure is no big deal and takes less than 30 minutes. Friends that have had it done in the UK went home on the bus after tea and biscuits. Why does cataract surgery require a hospital stay in Thailand? - Page 6 - Health and Medicine - Thailand News, Travel & Forum - ASEAN NOW -
