  1. I think schoolboy humour is funny too. It doesn't belong within a news organisation.
  2. The juvenile 'reporters' at The Thaiger think their school humour is funny. Not the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last.
  3. If you read again carefully you'll see that he didn't claim that ALL are crims and scumbags.
  4. I remember him doing a tour of the new airport in Bangkok before it opened and demanding to know why there were so many signs in English. And on the day he had demanded it be ready for opening, and it wasn't, he took a flight from there to Don Muang to demonstrate that the airport was indeed open on time. Even though it was closed again after his flight.
  5. Thanks for the experience report. I would never, under any circumstances, run the risk of having both eyes done at the same time. Why would I? And I'll be paying 50,000 plus 3400 for the room over two visits. I can forgo salmon and a de-luxe omelet. The doctor I consulted, the surgeon, spoke good English and explained everything very well and I have no doubt she'll do an excellent job.
  6. Of course, there are some who are more comfortable in a place with lower standards than they have to live up to at home. That's why they reside in a place where they don't have to try too hard.
  7. Are you seriously equating the official purchase of a license through the local authority with paying a Mr Big a bribe to have a jacket?
  8. Just proof that corruption exists in Thailand not only at the very top but also the very bottom, even to lowly motorcycle taxi drivers who have to pay for their place at the curb and even for their right to work at all by having to 'purchase' their jacket. Wonderful society, built on greed, corruption and - as a result - violence.
  9. Seems this imbecile isn't fit to be among society. A serial offender and still too young to be named, Just lock him away. He's no use to anyone and what are the odds he's just warming up in his offending. The article mentions that his guardian was informed, not his mother who is one of the people he's attacked before. What's that about? And despite numerous acts of violence, the police did what they are best at, which is nothing. Just to let him know he could attack others with impunity as long as it was members of his family.
  10. They don't pretend the UK is the land of smiles, as far as I know. And you think attacking a lone taxi driver because he was near 'their' spot is good reason? If I was a potential passenger I'd think it was up to me what mode of transport I wanted to use. And after seeing a mob attacking the taxi driver I know which I'd choose. Which would you choose?
  11. In some ways it's still in the 16th century, so it might take a while.
  12. Ah, don't you just love the land of smiles. Maybe it should be land of savages.
  13. I don't think any responsible person would operate on both eyes at the same time. From comments on here, the time between seems to vary from doing the second one between one day and one month after the first. A couple of weeks after the first, combined with an appointment to check the first one, seems to be the norm.
  14. It's a shame these huge lorries are so hard to see, isn't it. This a 10-wheeler and the related story an 18-wheeler. Neither seen by the motorcyclists.
  15. It's pretty frightening how many mentally ill people walk the streets in Thailand. My wife's car was hit by a large wooden plank as she drove by one of them. There seems to be very little care taken of such people. I wonder if it's like the Thai aversion of helping the disabled, some thinking that to be in that condition they must have been bad in a previous life so don't deserve help.
  16. Yes. But it's so normal that they consider it - well, normal.
  17. What is the point of the photo of the accused when it doesn't show the accused? Anyone? Anything other than showing the gallant five involved in the detention, some of whom look as if they've slept in a field.
  18. I'm up-country where choice is limited. I did also try a government hospital though, same price, same alleged need for a stay.
  19. The thread was about why an overnight stay is deemed necessary in Thailand, and no mention was made by me about insurance. The room is only 1700. The cost wasn't a factor, only why the hospital wanted me to stay at all. Provided free with the room charge, plus food which I might make other arrangements for. Normal with any medication. Always cheaper elsewhere.
  20. I don't have insurance. At 75 the cost far outweighs what I'd probably need to pay in future years. I keep the money for when I might need it, rather than give away large sums each year for nothing in return. The 50,000 for the two surgeries isn't a problem.
  21. No. Just their rule. The cost of 1700 for a private room isn't an issue, comfort is. And it isn't a great hospital. When I was there with food poisoning there was no water one day as the pump failed and they carried water to my room in buckets, and the emergency call button didn't work. Someone could die in that room and no-one would know the hospital was at fault.
  22. I'm doing the opposite. I'll get both cataracts done within maybe a month and then will deal with the glaucoma. That's a 'slow burner' that takes many years to progress. It hasn't been a significant problem by any means, and the second doctor said I don't even have it. A month delay isn't a problem
