  1. I am not sure if this is of any relevance or interest...
  2. Even if you complain, no-one listens, so you might as well not bother.
  3. 2. The state rights v federal rights was about preserving the right to own slaves, even when the federal government opposed it 3. The South’s agriculture was entirely dependent on slave labour 4. As you say, the president of the USA opposed slavery 5. This is secessionism - we want to be an agrarian slave economy governed by ourselves, not part of a modern free industrial economy, and we are afraid that our agrarian slave economy cannot compete for wealth or power with a modern industrial economy. Tell us again what else it was about.
  4. They were trying to sound posh, like missing out the R in Karzi
  5. Following on from a couple of recent threads, do you practice what you preach?
  6. Last Sunday we’d stopped for cider at a pub we thought we could trust, only to be sent on our way ciderless to Sid’s; they’ll not let us down … you can imagine our distress when our faith was cruelly betrayed, and we ordered Guinness in lieu. I checked in 7-11 next door, and resolved that the following week we’d take photos sat on their steps drinking Apple Fox and Somersby, for the chagrin of the brewery, but fortunately Strongbow is back in the pubs. It was scarcely the Great Kilkenny Drought of 2007 in Dubai, when there was naught but Guinness or lager on either side of The Creek for weeks on end, but I’d been worried how long we might last. Would we have to shorten our rides to limit our thirst, if there was no cider? Luckily, all’s well that ends well, until it doesn’t.
  7. Gentlemen only pull their own pudding, but no offence taken; to take offence when none was intended is theft of the worst kind; or in this instance- wurst kind
  8. My apologies - auto-correct run amok.
  9. If there’s no Lorna sausage or potato scones you might as well be eating an English breakfast
  10. I walked amongst them, back in the day, and what I found surprising about Americans was that they believed their own stories. Call it gullibility, call it faith, but that is the soul of the American Dream.
  11. There’s nothing as over-rated as a bad shag, or as under-rated as a good dump.
  12. A few years back, I was embarrassed about getting ushered to the front of the Covid-check queue at the supermarket as an “elderly” person - particularly since I had cycled there.
  13. My 30 seconds' research indicates that there have been no significant nuclear accidents at the Thai reactor in the years since it opened. That might be 60+ years, or it might be about 50 years. If Wikipedia is to be trusted, there were three fatalities from a radiological incident in Samut Prakarn slightly more than 20 years ago. As far as I can tell, no injuries have been linked to last year's loss of radio-active material from a power station in Prachin Buri. The material was subsequently recovered.
  14. Back in the day, my mate said, pointing “I’ve never understood transsexuals” ”I think if I had tits like that, I’d want to be a woman”
  15. If you only want to go half-way, so to speak, elastration may be the way forward, and simple enough with a visit to your local stationers’.
  16. If you’re considering a sex change, get a competent doctor lined up before you make a final decision - don’t “try it by yourself” for a few weeks to see how it works.
  17. I was heading home from the office - not fanging it, but brisk enough, when I heard a pop that might have been something falling off, but there was no bouncing noise, couldn’t see anything behind me, couldn’t see anything missing… Sure enough, when I got home and tapped round the back wheel, I found a broken spoke - broken (or in retrospect - maybe unthreaded) at the rim end. So I cut it short and carried on to the Post Office. I’d not cut the stub short enough (how hard is it to unlace J-spokes from the hub? All my previous failures were at the hub, and I’d just cut the spoke off immediately above the nipple) Anyway, the stump was fouling, and since the bike shop was open later than the Post Office, I dropped it off for repair, and recorded another Walk en route home on Strava.
  18. I was surprised how pleasant it was cycling on Sukhumvit Road. Although that was in October, so not so hot. SC
  19. Mine sloped different ways, and I could only write with one hand, or the other.
  20. I learnt to write with my right hand. It looks pretty much the same. Back in the day, I knew identical twins, one of whom was left-handed, the other contrary, and their writing was very similar, bar opposite slope.
  21. It’s six years since Remembrance Sunday fell on Armistice Day, and I may be moved on next year, so we cycled to the National Monument today. A few more km round the leafy hills of KL, and then 15 km up and down the Federal Highway saw us to Spitalfields, where we were told - to our distress - this was the last day of Cider - buy one, free one… Last day! If they’d told us “today only” we’d have been happy
  22. 05:44 today. I slept through, this morning. Food is more varied. Kuala Lumpur suffers more from burning in Indonesia. Burning in Thailand does not seem to affect Thailand so much. In KL, you can cycle to hills; Bangkok is as flat as last week’s lager for as far as you can go. I really enjoyed cycling in Bangkok, but I’m not sure that would remain true for long.
  23. Last Thursday I took the advantage of a public holiday to take round some local hills, including Tin Hau Temple (I forgot to turn three times to starboard, so I feel at risk of capsize) and then to the Mayor’s palace for a look out over the city After a few ciders at Sid’s (use your imagination!) I headed home, and back out in the evening to the Bell& for Depavali fireworks
  24. There’s nothing wrong with standing on your short shadow. edit: bar the infernal heat, and a sunburnt pate.
