  1. Marriage to a Thai makes a non immigrant O (other reasons) visa available. Extension of those married to a Thai woman may be marked "Thai Wife" but that is the extension of stay reason (which is not a visa).

For first extension of stay the money only has to be in bank for two months.

I read that is 2 months. Never mentions 3 months whether first, second or more extensions. It was an excerpt and may have been misquoted.

  2. Thank you too Mizzi, I always notice that you are an enormous help for those applying for US visas. The forum is fortunate to have guys like you, burymac, Pib and Gotlost

I have been told is nearly impossible to get a tourist visa to the US for a Thai wife. Therefore she has applied for an immigrant visa even though we never intend to stay there.

What do I need to know?

  3. I get the point of your post but if you value your life and/or don't like pain is anywhere safe?

I appreciate info on traffic blackspots, also I understand people cant all afford cars, and there'd be much worse traffic problems if everyone used a car instead, but it seems to be that many car drivers have this "I'm bigger than you,so I can kill you if you dont keep out of my way" attitude, which is perhaps the reason that there are so many motorcyclists killed and maimed.

So if that attitude is acknowledged to be wrong, end of problem

It is naive to imply that car drivers are responsible for bike deaths. The truth of the problem is that there is zero education in learning to drive either, the driving 'test' is a complete joke and of course there is the ability to bribe your way to a license (if you even bother to procure one) in both cases.

The driving in Chiang Mai is truly appalling, but to condemn just those in four wheel vehicles is somewhat disingenuous.

I'll agree that blaming car drivers is naive. In Thailand, but in the USA I am convinced they aim for you.

  4. I dont want to deal (with) the American embassy in the least to invade my constitutional privacy... Well as we Americans also say ' No harm ... no foul."

However, the best embodiment of your 'constitutional privacy' in this case is not to seek an income statement from the US Embassy but just do the 800k aged for 2 months-in-the-bank routine and then you never have to set foot on US property or make any statement to the US Government in order to obtain your extension of stay in The Kingdom of Thailand

I doubt the 'invasion of privacy' has much to do with this but I personally abhor having to deal with any government agency for anything.

    Prime example:

I needed a certified copy of my wife passport so I could apply for an ITIN for tax purposes. Easy right? Oh no. First I had to go to the foreign ministry so they could certify that it was an original document. (Nevermind that entire earth recognizes it as a valid document for travel). Then I had to take it back to the consulate so they could certify that the guy at the foreign ministry that certified the passport was in fact an individual that was certified to certify the document. All told: $100 USD

  5. There is no holding of passport (the longest time would be Pattaya where they keep overnight) and at most places it is about a 20 minute process.

Cost 1,900 baht for one year extension of stay.

Cost 3,800 baht for matching one year multi re-entry permit or 1,000 baht single entry.

If you do not have initial non immigrant visa 2,000 baht for that.

Is that 3800 for the Reentry permit only or the total for the extension and reentry permit?

  6. No one can tell you the answer without knowing the volume of air space of the room to be cooled.

The answer can be calculated once the maximum amount of current drawn is calculated. When the aircon is working at maximum, that's it. I just can't find information (that I trust) from shops or internet.

As a background I want to be able to close the bedroom windows at night. The aircon is probably going to be used as an air filter at night mostly, never during the day and only when it's very hot will the cooling actually be used. My walls are 25cm thick insulated blocks, the ceiling has 6 inches of insulation above it and the 2 windows are only 2 sq m each. The room is actually a comfortable temperature already but to buy an air filter / dehumidifier comes in at about the same price as aircon (with filter and dehumidifier), so aircon seems the best idea, especially as I would have to shut the windows to benefit from an air filter. If anyone knows any different.......

I can say the I had an uninsulated bedroom that I kept a 24 during the day and 22 at night. It was not a big room but the electric bill was ฿1000 per month.

  7. What was the final outcome to the H1N1 vaccine Thailand was developing/trying to manufacture in-country? I remember several delays/setbacks then it seemed to kinda drop off the news map.

There is one. Got it in Chula 390 thb, in Bumrungrad it s 1200 thb.

Got mine for free in the US; available to anyone working in the public sector or with children. Apparently Thailand doesn't care enough about its citizens to implement similar policy. Personally know 4 people who have contracted it this week.

No true. My father inlaw got the '2009 virus' injection for free in Nong Bua Lamphu just last month.

  8. Inequality isn't just measured in land owned or wealth .

One of the worst examples I see in Thailand is how a person's contribution to society is valued.

For instance someone who builds a house for others rarely seems to earn enough for a house of the same quality for themselves.

Similarly those who produce the food or catch the fish often live in terrible conditions with little hope of ever seeing any improvement to those conditions.

Most of the people at the bottom I am sure don't want a hand out just a fair return for what they do and the respect that their skills deserve.

There is also the aspect that no matter how much some people get they will never be able to do anything but squander it.

A great example is the Mrs's sisters husband who has a good job but spends all his money on gambling and drinking, very rarely takes any of his money home, is around 300kB in debt has pawned his wifes gold and emptied the kids money boxes and today I hear that yesterday he pawned the family car for 100k and gave the money to a friend.

The car isn't yet paid off (8000B per month) and now they haven't got the use of it, any money given to him and his ilk would be wasted immediately.

Thailand has a 'caste' society. It cannot change a lot until that goes away. India is a prime example.

  9. Something like what is being done in the west at this time could be suggested , billionairs have been asked to give half of thier wealth to agencies for the poor , billions of dollars have poured forth to aid the poor since the requests started and it seems more is to follow . Who needs that much money any way ?

One problem with that is, if you give something to someone, they tend to not respect it and squander it because it was free and there will be more.

If the 'agencies' would set up programs to assist it would be better. Raising price barriers on the farm products so the poor farmer can get a better profit, would be one thing. It would be that he actually earned the money, not just given a handout.

Everything must be gradual or it will upset the economy.

My wife and I can eat for around ฿100. This is too cheap.

  10. I am not really interested in politics. But I do believe all countries are the same....... power corrupts and thus it is hard to have honest people in power.

Thailand currently is not a democracy, but a police/military state. Under this condition Thaksin would be crazy to surrender himself to the will of his opponents.

I read all the posts painting him as an evil person who harmed Thailand. These people obviously know nothing of the recent political history of Thailand.

Thaksin was elected & re-elected by the people of Thailand, he was & is popular with the majority of Thais. He was ousted while he was out of the country by his opponents with the backing of the military.

Was he good for Thailand? I believe he was ... he is a good businessman and Thailand was prospering. Was he corrupt? Probably. Are there any honest politicians taking his place? Not likely. If all politicians are the same, isn't better to have one that does good things for Thailand?

His party got re elected by the poorer people because they were bought off. He had gazillionz to buy anything which is not much in reality. In other words he was elected illegally. He got caught. Not for that but other things.

  11. There will be a new spa opening at Klong Muang Beach In Krabi Province. It is past the Sheraton but before Sofitel.

All the ladies that will be working there have training from 5 Star resorts.

The opening day is not exact but probably the first week in September. The prices are reasonable. It should be a very nice experience.

Klong Muang beach has several hotels from 3 - 5 star and has grown very popular in the last couple of years.
