So the US broker holds 15 percent or 30 percent? I thought it was  30 percent but someone here just said 15 percent

Nonresident aliens are subject to a dividend tax rate of 30% on dividends paid out by U.S. companies. The 30% tax rate can also be lower depending on the treaty between your home country and the U.S.

Example, due to the double tax agreement between the US and UK, the amount of withholding tax on dividend can be reduced to 15% for UK citizens holding US stocks.

The local company who will be installing had a special on Hikvison (promo flyer attached) for 13900 baht. With all included it sounds like a good deal.   Figured it would be nice to have an established local company install in case of problems.  Will ask them about Reolink and see what they offer. As I have gained knowledge I know a bit more about what questions to ask now.  Never had the need for cams before so playing catch up. Read up on Hikvision.

It looks like the CCTV system in the above promotion is using coaxial cable and the cameras are analog. So it most likely cannot record audio. If you need audio, you can ask the installer for the system with IP-Cameras using power over Ethernet cable connected to Network Video Recorder.

    1) Tax on dividends from stocks - how does that work

Your broker will deduct your tax obligations from the dividends.

Your broker is also supposed to send you a yearly statement, Form 1042 showing total dividends and also the total withholdings.

If the withholding is correct , you dont have to do anything. If not you will need to get a tax identification number from the IRS and file Form 1040NR for a refund or to make up the difference. Schwab International and Interative Brokers accounts come with a US based bank account. The balance in the bank account is the cash you have in the brokerage account. YOu can use the bank's routing number and account number on Form 1040NR for a refund. Easy. You may be able to pay the IRS from the bank account if you owe.

    2) Tax on profits from selling stocks - how does that work?

As your capital gain is tax free, you will get any sales proceed in full from the broker. Lucky you.

I believe OP question is for tax in Thailand for the earnings in foreign stocks held oversea.

On 8/29/2020 at 8:05 PM, CrossBones said:

I assume 1) is taxable in Thailand and 2) is not taxable

Tax deductions by foreign brokers are for the IRS (US tax authority) so unless double taxation agreements between US and Thailand is in place, OP may still need to pay tax in Thailand. One way to avoid paying tax in Thailand is to keep the dividends or profits in foreign brokerage account and bring them back into Thailand one year after it's earned.

Thanks for your informative and clear options.  Can I call those numbers on my Thai mobile without skype? Less importantly, are they free to call on  my Thai mobile? I just need to know what numbers I can call on my mobile since it is so difficult to connect to a business due to the time difference and being placed on hold for a long time.

Free calls to toll free numbers above are only by using Skype.

You will not be able to use Thai mobile to call those toll free numbers directly.

Mostly doesn´t work, for me anyway. I just call the direct number all the time.

If you wish to call cheap to America from Thailand you can do that with Skype. They have great subscriptions starting from unlimited call for one month from 3 usd. Also includes unlimited calls to Puerto Rico and Guam. If you wish to include Canada as well. The total cost will be about 4 dollars. That includes unlimited calls to both mobiles and landlines.

The business model at CP-All (the owner of 7-11 in Thailand) goes something like this...

"We currently have a store in this area that does 1 million baht per month. If we open another store 500 meters away, we think we can do a total of 1.2 baht per month. That's a 20% increase in revenue!"

Of course, the poor sucker that bought the franchise for the original store will now see a 40% decline in his revenue, but CP-All will be selling 20% more product.

The guy who bought the franchise for the original store is normally given the choice to open second 7-11 nearby if sales consistently over the target. The franchise for the second store will only go to new comer if the original store decline to take it. The saying is the real competitor of a 7-11 store is not a Family Mart or Lotus but another 7-11.

So Thai prawns found to be fake, contain rusty Thai nails. Then Thai nails found to be fake, contain no actual Iron. Vendor found to be a liar, can't believe anything he says. Just another day in paradise.

The story itself makes no sense, I would suggest that he's been doing this for years, but was generally sober enough to remember to remove the nails after cooking. Hence now he gets caught.

It looks like vendor doesn't know there are nails in the prawn.

They normally buy prawn from local fishermen or prawn farms.

One of the fisherman may come up with the idea to make more money when selling to the vendor by adding nails to the catch of the day.

He know he will not get caught because vendor cannot inspect every single prawns from every single fisherman.

Having said that, vendor is still responsible for quality control of seafood they are selling and need to inspect more thoroughly.

  8. HIKVISION CCTV system is quite popular in Thailand.

It is not very user friendly to setup but it is cheap and also meet all the check boxes below.

Once it is setup correctly, monitoring using IOS app is a breeze.

-Live view via an IOS app on iPhones.

-Network Video Recorder with 2 TB capacity can record on loop and still have enough capacity of hold about one month recordings.

-UPS is needed to ride out the short power outages a few times a week

-Cameras are network cameras and don't need to climb up to remove SD cards.

-Use power over Ethernet cable to deliver power and data to network cameras.

-Installation service is recommended as set up is not user friendly.

-User menus is in English language but not very use friendly to use.

  10. You may need a safety release valve in case of pressure build up. If you accidentally shut off manual valve while air pump is running, you will have compressed air inside the PVC pipe. Water is not compressible and cannot store energy in the same way that air can. When air is compressed inside of PVC piping, the pipe can swell and burst at a high pressure, sending PVC shrapnel outward, potentially injuring anyone within close range.

Probably because they are illegal migrant workers and couldn't go back through official channels such as air ports due to fear of arrest.

Yes, hotels? Two posters have asked. Anyone? Ive seen signs at the low end short time/overnight "resorts" round here saying closed until 1 June.  And proper resorts and hotels? I don't know. Haven't been near any of any kind since February. On line those I've looked at say closed until 1 June also. The wife and I would like a couple of nights from home ( and her family!) in a nice place!!!

I just spent a week at the Hotel Kantary Bay Rayong. Beach in front of the hotel is public beach so you can find usual beach chairs and restaurants. Hotel pool is open but gym is close.

    And what is this area?

An area where you can travel freely back and forth to other provinces, where hotels are open with their pools and restaurants, where movie theaters and entertainment places are open, schools are open, in short where life is back to normal???

Almost. I am now staying at Rayong. My hotel pool is open since 17/May. Nearby beach is open with usual beach chairs and swimmers. Restaurants are all open. It is only 3 hours drive from Bangkok. No check points along the way to and from Bangkok.

You don't need to load money into True money app. True money wallet allow directly charging your credit/debit card for the purchases that you made.

Do you know that the charges are, if any, assuming there are charges, e.g. nothings for free

No additional charges for paying with True Money wallet linked to Thai bank issued credit/debit card.
