  1. I now have my age against me as I am now over 50.

Rubbish, I took up my last position at the age of 62 and that was 4 years ago. I had been retired for 3 months., Money was not nor is a problem, however boredom and social contact was lacking. I love my wife and our three boys but I must have mental stimulation.

Believe in yourself, there is no such word as, ''can't.''

    It's a case of, ''I can, I will, I am , I have."

Oh, I believe in myself but it seems to me that many places here in Thailand now set an age limit of 50.

  2. Might one possibly suggest that you are at the wrong university! Most the ones that I have worked at start out on lowish salaries but their is an increment every year.

Yes, you are right. I work at a government university and every year they talk about being privatized and that the salaries will go up so I keep hanging on. Only last week they talked about making the university "an internationally recognized research university" but this seems to go on and on.

I now have my age against me as I am now over 50.

  3. I often wonder why we see non native English speakers employed in schools to teach English.

55,000 a month for a qualified English or general class teacher ?

Good qualified staff do not even get out of bed for that salary.

And schools with EP/MEP still provides a Thai-style environment, so students do not adopt "Western values".

Therein lies the cause of failure, one needs to understand the culture of the language and the adoption of those Western values so as one can actually enhance the use of the language one is learning so as to become proficient in the use of the target language.

Teachers from other cultures and countries are expected to jump through hoops via the T.C.T.

Sad to say the quality of the T.C.T. Thai lecturers is very poor, a poor command of English an inability or reluctance to actually answer question when posed as it is seen as an insult to the lecturers ability and of course standing. The idea of teaching is based on an information exchange system, that information which a lecturer gives out returns as an answer or a question to actually drive home the salient point.

The ability to dance, the inevitable question do you like Thai food the inane conversations, questions that are indeed far removed from the reality of the classroom all combine to make the T.C.T. course even unworthy of being implemented in a kindergarten programme.

Yet again another example of ''squeeze as much money out of a foreigner as you can'' mindset.

55,000 per month, please tell me where. I know of some universities that only pay 25, 000 to start and then really lousy yearly increases - after 6 /7 years you might be lucky to be paid 35,000.

I have been at the same university for 11 years and am still receiving the same pay.

  4. pobably not enough changes in temperature to warrant wanting to know them.... hot hotter and hottest with major humidity...

moving to bangkok forum maybe someone there has more of a clue...

    maybe this will help http://www.jaycar.co....x=0&SUBMIT.y=0

obviously avail cheaper in Thailand, or ex HK / China

Yes I have seen them on English websites and thought of ordering from them. They aren't expensive so what I'll probably do is get one delivered to my friend in England and let him bring it over when he comes here.

I thought about having it sent directly to me but there are so many horror stories with the Thai customs. (I myself had to pay a fortune to import my own old books and CD's)

Yes, you are right. Actually one of the reasons I would like to have one is that we have just insulated the roof of our house. I would often come home to 37 or 38degrees indoors and 33 outdoors. Since insulating we are getting 30 degrees indoors but....... the weather isn't so hot these days so it's difficult to see if the insulation has really helped.

You are right about it always being hot, hotter and hottest.

  6. I have one on top of my computer case (33.2oC) with the 'outdoor' sensor inside the case (39.1oC) - Atech, but I can't remember where I bought it; the little hardware/electronics section in Tokyu, MBK (level 4?) comes to mind, but not sure.

    Cheers,

    K.

Ok. MBK is one of the few places i haven't tried yet. Thanks for the tip.

  7. I brought my indoor outdoor thermometer over from Europe 10 years ago but now it has packed up. I miss waking up in the mornings amd glancing at the temperature each day.

I have searched high and low in Bangkok but cannot find a replacement. Has anyone ever seen them in the shops here or are Thais just not interested in knowing the temperature?

I know I can order online but I'd rather buy one here if possible.

  8. How effective are police revolvers against M79 and AK47?

    How effective are the checkpoints???

All I ever seem to see is a group of police officers sitting around talking. How do they know who to stop?

Same on MRT the actual security checks are worthless as the security staff never really check the baggage.

I think it's all show just to say that the police have done their part in the security operations.

  9. How can people on this forum claim this to be such a terrible thing but claim to see it on a daily basis and do nothing about it. Please don't plead ignorant as if you don't know what to do. There are NUMEROUS things that can be done to stop this without worrying about yourself since a number of your claim such outrage but are willing to risk nothing to stop it.

Something sounds awful fishy. But if this story has truth and these posters are credible ... the reason this is happening is because of the people who pretend to be outraged but do nothing ... same folks we see posting here.

So what are the "numerous" things one can do?

The most obvious is to report to the police but the Thai cops just turn a blind eye. I can't understand why, when the International police forces all work together to stamp out child porn. Someone very big must be behind the scenes here.

Maybe the International press should be informed.

Some Thai people don't seem to have any feelings regarding child porno and only care about money.

I was in Pantip once looking to buy hardware when some Thai man approached me and asked if i wanted a young girl and showed me a picture of a little girl of about 10 years. I just told him no and walked away. He followed me and grabbed my arm showing me a photo of a young boy and asked if I wanted a boy instead. I think I was more annoyed than shocked and i just shrugged it off. I didn't bother to report him or anything because i am pretty sure nothing would have happened to him.

  10. We've had a dreambox for 4 or 5 days now and I can't get the dam thing to work.

I've tried so many different things. Today I bought a "4 hub box" or whatever it's called but still cannot get it to work. I get the information about the different channels but there is a yellow key on most of the channels ... Oh I get all the education channels and TNN but that's all.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try the freezer. If that doesn't work I'll throw it on Klong Saen Saeb.

  11. Some sites, like TheBox, TheEmpire require you to keep a certain ratio of upload to download,

otherwise you go into Ratio Warning and are liable to be banned if you do not upload enough.

To be fair to others you must be prepared to keep downloads on disk for a while so that people

can share. Alternatively you can make new material available for upload.

I've been using TheBox for sometime now and recently joined TheEmpire but the last 2 weeks or so I get a 404 Not found every time I try open TheEmpire. Is it blocked? I am using True in Bangkok.

  12. You break the law you pay the fine...what's wrong with that whether you are a thai or a foreigner....

otherwise " DO NOT LITTER " if you want to then do it in your home country.... :ermm:

I agree with you but the problem is that these guys target foreigners. They will follow a foreigner for a hundred meters or more if he is smoking, just waiting for him to drop the but. Do they follow Thai people smoking on the street?

A little off topic but still about breaking the law is that I have noticed on the MRT more and more people are eating and drinking. Last week a group of young Thais pulled out a big box of KFC and sat on the platform in full view of MRT staff and started eating. No one said anything to them. They got on the train and the whole compartment stank of KFC. Only a few days earlier I saw a tourist take a sip of water while waiting on the platform. The staff immediately rushed forward with sign language that drinking wasn't allowed.

  13. Any tips for a flyer coming in a few days? I really want to try it, but need to get to Sukumvit asap...no luggage to speak of:) thx.

Take the airport train to Phaya Thai, then the skytrain to where ever on Suhkumvit you need to be. Quick, easy, and cheap

Sorry I haven't read all the posts yet (for some reason TV seems incredibly slow) but late Tuesday afternoon I went to the MRT at Petchaburi and just outside the ticket office was an elderly farang lady with two large suitcases and two other small bags. he looked pretty hot and sweaty after probably dragging the bags all the way from the airport link to the MRT.

There were two MRT officials talking to her and refusing to let her use the underground. I didn't stop to listen but I could hear her saying that she came from the airport linkand wanted to go to Sukhumvit Road.

I can see her point that she didn't want to take a taxi when the subway went to Sukhumvit. (Apart from that I wonder if she could have got the two large suitcases and bags in a taxi )

  14. I do wonder how places like Cal Wow can stay in business with their cashflow. A few years ago they offered lifetime memberships (maybe they still do) and since then the number of "users" has gone up significantly while the cashflow has slowed to a crawl. I'm sure the rent in places like Paragon, Esplanade and other malls must be quite hefty given the large square footage these places take up.

So how can this company stay in business?

If you look at a chart of the shares it looks like many believe their prospects have declined over the last few years, it now trades at 49 satangs when it used to trade over 5 bt per share. The value of the whole company is now less than 270 mil bt with debt of 400+ mil bt. They may not be with us much longer!

I know of 4 or 5 students at the university on soi 23 who pay 2000 baht a month for 2 years to use Cal. Wow and only at the Soi 23 branch. They are committed for the 2 years as they submitted their credit cards (or parents' cards).

So if this the new sales method then I'm sure cash flow won't be a problem. Just walk by any branch especially in the evenings and see how many people are being "captured".
