1. It's true (no pun intended) that True customer service knows nothing of this promotion. You have to contact sales directly and I have the telephone number.

No surprises there. In both apartments I've lived in Bangkok, True customer service told me there was no True internet in either building. Both times it was necessary to contact some shadowy 'salesperson' who hooked it up.

Is it possible to set up some kind of wi-fi from the main computer?

Hook a wireless router into the cable modem.

P.S. I agree with the above post on cable internet. In my experience, it's a crap shoot. Usually with the emphasis being on crap.

I forgot to mention that the sales girl talked to me about speeds and reliability and she "guarantees" that a 10 Mb will give at least 9Mb speeds.

  2. Cable internet speeds are theoretical and depend on how many users are hanging off the same node. In a normal cable network there are usually around 100 freestanding dwellings off a single node. In Bangkok who has any clue how many residences are hanging off that node?!?!?

I have a friend who subscribes to a 100mb cable modem plan. On a good day he gets the same download speeds as a 16mb ADSL connection but during busy times the speed is 1/10th of that

I'd give it a wide berth, you would be far better off with the 16mb ADSL plan at half the price.....

You obviously didn't see my earlier posting with the prices. I can see that ADSL 16Mb is 2,299 Baht. For 1,799 baht they are offering 30Mb on cable. These are NOT the prices advertised on the website but a special promotion.

From what I gather this is a new idea from True. They are setting up a special hub with a limited number of users. First come first serve.

One thing I forgot to ask them was whether I could still get free wifi at their hotspots. This is something I would surely miss as I travel a lot daily and use hotspots all over Bangkok.

  3. So hopefully you already have TRUE CATV (cable). You'll need it.

AFAIK TRUE & UBC have had cable internet continuously for a very long time. Most customers prefer ADSL.

I have sat TV & thus cable modem not possible.

yes, I have True cable TV, although the person I talked to from True said it wasn't necessary to have a True cable Tv subscription. Maybe for those that don't have cable TV they will just put the line in.

Incidentally this offer is only open until 28 February 2011.

Just phoned True online customer service. Person I spoke to had no idea when I asked about the 100mb cable product and can i get it installed... sad.gif gave up in the end.

Ok, I have the latest news on this promotion.

It's true (no pun intended) that True customer service knows nothing of this promotion. You have to contact sales directly and I have the telephone number. Am I allowed to post it here?

It seems this promotion is only available in certain areas of Bangkok. I am on Thong Lor and the service is only available on a few sois on Thong Lor. Luckily I am on one of the sois.

I asked about reliability, up times and so on and was told that it is "VERY stable" (but then again what else would she say?).

They also told me that when I use their cable modem I won't have wi-fi. As I use 2 laptops around the house I need this. Is it possible to set up some kind of wi-fi from the main computer?

  5. Apparently they give a free cable modem and Coaxial Cable.

You sure about the cable modem? Didn't know True had cable internet. Anyway, any modem True provides will be worse than useless and should be chucked in the bin.

As far as the connection goes, I'm currently showing this (originally subscribed to 2Mbps connection):

    Status: Up

    Downstream Rate: 9408 kbps

    Upstream Rate: 604 kbps

Not getting anything like that down (from my own server which is on a gigabit connection via FTP multi-thread, so it should be maxed out). More like 500kB max, but on the whole the connection is very solid. I've had no serious cause for complaint with True internet in nearly 4 years of continuous use (Bangkok).

Yes, I am sure about the cable modem. I didn't know they had cable Internet either.

A representative from True will contact me tomorrow with more details.

I am currently on 6 Mbps for 599 baht and just did a speed test. I am downloading at 6.60Mb/s so I am quite satisfied with this.

As I mentioned before I think True have provided a very good connection and their service is tip top nowadays.

I am just considering paying 100 baht (+VAT) more for a faster connection.

  6. These links give other prices than the leaflet I was given by True employees at Co-op Ekamai (Under California Wow).

    The prices I have are:

    10Mbps/1Mbps 699

    20Mbps/2Mbps 1,299

    30Mbps/3Mbps 1,799

    50Mbpd/5Mbps 2,799

    100 Mbps/10Mbps 4,499

Free connection fee (normal 2000 Baht)

Free Cable Modem (value 3,000 baht)

Free Coaxial Cable (value 2,600 Baht)

    Cannot cancel for 12 months.

Tel. 089 113 1256 (am I allowed to post that?)

  7. I've just received a leaflet with the above promotion from True. Apparently they give a free cable modem and Coaxial Cable.

The condition is that you have used their normal hi-speed Internet for at least 1 year.

I must admit that I've been very satisfied with True for the past couple of years and now have 6 Mbps for 599 baht.

Does anyone have the above promotion? If so, how is it? Are the speeds reliable and is the connection stable?

  8. I sympathize with you and also have experienced something similar.

All the crazy ideas of "move" or do the same thing don't really help you. It's not easy just to sell a condo one has just purchased.

If these people make a mess like that outside the condo what does it look like inside?

You say the condo they live in is owned by a Thai who bought it for investment purposes. Does he ever come there to inspect the condo? I know of some Thais who are very concerned about the property they rent out and regularly inspect the area.

If you know who the owner is why not try to contact him and talk to him about the problem? It's also possible has other units in the same building and is interested in renting them out. If it's a messy place then people won't want to live there and he won't be able to rent out.

  9. Siemans system could only be used on trains manufactured by them, is probably a good indication of why they work. Another brainstorm to mix different manufacturers for what purpose? We probably know the answer to that question and doubt that monetary saving to the government, public convenience, etc entered into it. Its encouraging that they have hope it will now work properly.sssshhhhhh

Just hope they do not start monkeying with the autopilot system on their commercial aircraft.

So just because the Siemens systems only work on Siemens trains, the BTS should just continue to buy Siemens trains, instead of putting in a system that works on any train.

All new electronic and computer systems go through teething problems. They are just ironing out these problems. Now they are back in testing phase, and rather than put the 4 carriage trains back in peak hour, they are FIRST testing them outside peak hour. When they have proved themselves there, they will test them again during peak hour. This should ensure that passengers are not inconvenienced further.

I understand that the new trains were manufactured in China- probably at a considerable cost savings. I wonder though if Siemens could still manufacture additional cars for the existing trains. Expanding the 3 car trains to 4 cars would boost capacity without purchasing many new train sets.

I just read in another newspaper either yesterday or today about all the pirated goods that are made in China and the list said nearly everything is pirated from CD's to trains.

Let's hope they haven't bought pirated trains!

  10. This high season is pretty low, increased competition for money, police owned jet skis, corrupt police everywhere, why is anyone surprised this shit is happening? These Irish guys will go home and tell their friends, who will tell their friends, etc etc , next high season even lower, blah blah.

This is not Disney Land people, pay attention.Give then what they want, the police are in on it, and live to play another day.

The best thing to do is: don't rent jet skis (or any other equipment) in Pattaya and Puket. If you're an expat who is living here, educate you're friends who are visiting to the types of scams that are being run here. You can eventually put these jerks out of business by simply boycotting their services. Maybe and even better idea -- find a different location other than Pattaya or Puket. There are many other beautiful places to visit in Thailand where the service providers are relatively honest business-people trying to make a living without ripping off tourists. Just don't play the game.

Slightly off topice but I have just read in the newspaper that a Chinese couple were killed yesterday in a jet ski accident in Phuket. Apparently the woman lost control and hit a yacht.

  11. Although my story has no revelance to the jetski scam it has with the knife incident.Only this weekend I got into a fight with a group of Thai scum over a car accident in Rayong. To cut a long story short I was punched unprovoked by the one Thai that was involved at the time. After retaliating and giving the lowlife a hiding the usual scenario of Thai cowardice evolved. He'd got on the phone and a couple more lowlifes turned up.At this point the thing escalated to where I was being threatened with a machete.Luckily for me the police (I use that term lightly) arrived.I'll add that I also had my G/F and her brother and sisters young daughters with me.After making statements at the station and the police omitting the machete incident they were allowed to walk free. This is only an outline of the full story but gives an insight to what use the police are here in Thailand. What I find unbelievable is not just the fact that if the police hadn't turned up when they did I might not be here to post this reply,it's the fact no one's concerned that scumbags such has these are able to brandish machete's around when young children are about. The place is lawless.

You're lucky the police did something to help you. I saw an accident last night where a car hit a motorcycle. A group of 10 - 12 motorcycle taxi boys just attcked the driver AND passengers but the worst part of it all was the the cop who was there at the scene just turned his back and walked away until the fighting had died down.

In the case of the Jet ski scam the cops are involved as I have seen the same cop come to the scene in a space of 1 hour and take away the farang victims.

I would also say that many of the food vendors are involved because every time I have seen this going on, the argument starts between the jet ski owner and the farang toursit. As soon as the tourist protests a whole group of vendors show up, surround him and shout "farang gohok! farang gohok"

  12. I posted an article about this a couple of years ago.

It was exactly the same place ... Opposite Mike's shopping mall.

The police came twice to take the farangs away. This scam will never stop as long as the BIB are involved.

The police in Thailand have no interest in doing their job of stopping crime unless there is some kind of financial reward. I witnessed that about 10 minutes ago and am still contemplating on starting a new thread describing what I saw.

  13. Yes, ball scratching is not all that popular in Thailand, I wonder why?

No, but sticking a finger 2 or 3 cms up the nose is.

Yes, I've seen waiters do that too.

I think one of the worst things is when they go to the toilet and don't wash their hands afterward.

I've mentioned somewhere here before that I once saw a street vendor peeling and cutting fruit. She then took the very same knife to gently pick at her teeth. Needless to say I've never bought anything from her.

  14. The Ipad has 100 times more Apps available than the Android based tablets. This is my reason for not buying a Galaxy, though its hardware part is much more appreciating than the Ipad.

The Android tablet procucers have really been sleeping their days away. First they did not have the hardware ready, when Apple launched the Ipad and still they don´t have proper software ready. Most newspapers and magazines only support Ipad and not Android.

C'mon ... 100 times more apps than Android. Do you really need 300,00 apps? An app that says "bang" when you shake your phone. An app. that appears to be a glass of beer that slowly disappears as your drink it. Who needs all that crap?

I would buy Galaxy S. any day and probably only install a few useful apps.

    Flash is a must nowadays.

Anyway I read that Samsung will be releasing some new Android tablets soon.

  15. What policy do you have? I am not aware of any BUPA policy that has such low coverage.

Note that the amount covered for an operation is listed in several parts, not just one category, in the benefits schedule.

    Hi Sheryl and OP,

can I ask what the symptoms were like? After I run or play sport I get a bit of a bulge in the pubic region (no jokes on bulge pun please) left side, that I can sort of push back in, not painful.

My other guess is that when I run I am not using proper support and I wonder if its not tissue inflammation as I injured the area diving in hard sand playing beach volleyball about three months ago, unsure.

    Thanks GOM

That happened to me twice now. I had one operation back home and one here at Bangkok Hospital about 5 years ago.

The treatment here was excellent. I went in one morning, had the operation and went home the next morning.

Cost 60.000 Baht but my insurance paid for it all.

I don't think the surgical fees were so high but there were a whole lot of other expenses.

  16. oh..i'm sorry you just now noticed...but mickey d's has been using these warming drawers all over..for..AGES!!!!! :P

love it or leave it!! but if you really want something hot..u have to be picky like say "no ketchup" or something then they have to make a new one....which will mean...microwaved to order..... >.<

Yes, I know that but I don't think I made myself clear. I don't mean the warming drawers where the finished burgers are stored.

The actually burgers are fried (or grilled) and then put into some small "steaming drawers" at the back - out of sight. I think this is done to save time when making burgers to order.

When I complained they made a new burger for me using the meat from these drawers. The bun was hot but the meat inside was still lukewarm.

The McDonalds where I have experienced this are at Major Ekamai, J-Avenue Thong Lor and Robinson Asoke.

  17. What a load of <deleted>!!!!!! eat somewhere else.

Did the draw say dick head on it?????

The reason Burger King was hot was because they have no aircon

If you go to chilly burger you will get much colder birgers, despite the name. You should try "Eat it while it's hot" a new chain in Thailand. They sell original Thai burgers that that have chillies in and are hot all day

    Thanks for the friendly reply.

I mentioned that I don't eat at McDonalds very often and wanted to know if they served cold or lukewarm burgers everywhere.

I'd eat Thai food any day instead of Mac. but sometimes I get dragged along in a group of people who decide on eating at Mac's.

Incidentally Burger King did have aircon.

As for "Eat while it's hot" I have never seen one but if I find one I'll give it a try.

  18. I find it quite strange that the fact that the CRES is canvassing transport companies for information on chemical movements is being disseminated on national media by - the CRES!!!

Now, I'm no anti-terrorist expert, but even I know that when a national security agency is on the tracks of potential perpetrators, the last thing they want to do is blow their chances of arresting the culprits by letting absolutely everyone in the entire country know what lines of investigation they are following.

So we are left with two possibilities which could explain this bizarre anti-leak:

    1) The CRES doesn't know anything about how to conduct a proper investigation.

    2) They are using scaremongering tactics to achieve their ends (whatever they are - a desire to maintain themselves as a relevant organization springs to mind as one possibility).

Can someone who finds this approach logical please explain the reason behind this announcement?

I think point nr. 2 is the most likely.

It's not long ago that there was another thread on the lines of "Terrorist attacks expected within the next 20 days". I was only thinking yesterday "Thank God the 20 days have gone without any episodes".

Let's see what happens at the end of November if there hasn't been any trouble. Maybe the next headlines will be something like "New Year celebrations canceled due to terror threats".

Maybe CRES has cried "Wolf" just too often.

Don't get me wrong. I am wary of bomb attacks but the general Thai public don't seem to care any more. Yesterday I went to a Starbucks Coffee shop and someone had left a bag on a table (most likely to reserve the seat) but after one hour they hadn't come back and when I mentioned this to the staff they just smiled and carried on with their business.

  19. I am posting this topic in this forum as I think it will get more coverage but if the mods want to move it then they are welcome.

Normally, I don't eat at McDonalds very often but over the past two or three months, for various reasons, I have eaten there.

I have noticed that the food (burgers) are lukewarm. The first 3 or 4 times I complained and they gave me a new burger but it wasn't really any warmer than the original one they gave me.

Last time I went there I happened to notice that the burgers are now stored in some kind of warm cupboard or drawer. I am not sure if they are stored in warm water or not.

Anyway, today I went to Burger King for the first time in a couple of years and was surprised to find that the burger was hot.

Oh.... I often go to McDonalds for a coffee and a corn pie. Last year I had to wait several minutes before eating the pie as it was so hot. Now that is also lukewarm and I can eat it within seconds.

I'd like to know if the lukewarm burgers (and pies) exist all over Thailand or even in other countries or only at the 2 or 3 branches I visit.

I must admit that now I don't feel like eating McDonalds at all.

  20. Something wrong with this poll.

How can you vote "no" without voting on the second part?

Oh... now you all know my vote. I wouldn't report it to anyone. As it is I don't know anyone claiming illegal benefits at the moment and no, I wouldn't "bubble" on anyone. (Sorry I've never heard that expression before.)

I do, however, think it's wrong of people to claim various benefits from their home country whilst living here.
