  1. How many responses would an email written in Thai get from Western companies in the West?

Learn Thai, or at the very <deleted> least have a Thai PA if you're doing business here, in order to contact Thai companies you're looking to deal with. It's simple common sense of the lowest level.

And the international language of business is?????? Thai??????

I have done business with companies in S. America, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Japan. All correspondence was of course in English.

Thai people are generally afraid to use English for fear of making mistakes. Try calling a Thai company and speaking English ( I don't mean the big international companies) and see how many times your call is forwarded to someone else. I know a Thai company very well where all the managers love to use English words and the staff have no idea what they are talking about and ask me the meanings of the words.

Apart from that try sending an email in Thai and see how few responses you get. Yes, I have tried that too.

I might also add that many European companies don't always answer emails.

Last Friday I sent an email to Panasonic Thailand. Surprise surprise I received a very full reply to my inquiry Monday morning.

  2. I use size 11 in shoes and yes, it can be a problem finding shoes in Thailand. Usually I go to Paragon, Central Chidlom, Emporium or even Robinson Asoke. Be prepared for a low selection of shoes and high prices.

    Sandals are easier to find.

  3. I did notice that since I had the HD reciever I can now access all programs for the day for all the channels by pressing the'guide'button on the handset.(Humax)...dont know if this is specific to the HD/Humax though.

I am still using an analogue decoder so no possibilities there.

  4. Thanks guys. It works perfectly with Internet Explorer but not with Firefox.

I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 from Vista. Installed Firefox but not all the plug-ins. I didn't want to install the plug ins because I was fed up with Firefox crashing. Looks like I'll have to do it anyway.

  5. I'm on True too.

I can connect to other sites without problems although I cannot use my VPN. I have sent a log file to the VPN host and they claim they've never seen such a problem.

Maybe True are up to something or have problems with the international connection.

  6. Me too. I've been having the same problem since yesterday evening. They are intermittently available though.

Yes, I noticed it started yesterday morning. I thought maybe I had a bad connection.

  7. I am sure I read a few weeks ago in another newspaper that anyone who saw an elephant in Bangkok and reported it to the police would get a reward. I forget the figure... maybe 1000 baht or something. At the same time any policeman arresting the mahout would also get a reward.

Mind you if a tourist is threatened with a 10,000 baht fine then the cops stand to make more money by turning a blind eye to the elephants but keeping an eagle eye on the tourists.

Seriously though I agree entirely that elephants do not belong on the streets of Bangkok. The same goes for gibbons, eagles and other animals that people keep so that tourists can take a souvenir photo.

  8. I feel completely for the OP.

There are so many of you saying things like "in America you'd get 3 points for parking..." "In England if you did that...".. bla bla bla. This is NOT England or USA and even though there may be similar laws you can forget anything about them being enforced.

There is a crossing right outside Thong Lor police station. Try crossing that on a busy day. First there are no cars that stop (even though they can get fined for not doing so). Then when you arrive on the opposite side from the police station it's impossible to get to the footpath for motorcycles parked there. Oh did I forget to mention that often one or two of the motorcycles belong to cops who are eating at the restaurants?

It's also impossible to walk on the footpath right there because of the vendors so I took the liberty of walking on the road. A cop came running out of the restaurant and "ordered" me to walk on the footpath. I noticed he didn't say anything to the 2 or 3 Thais also walking on the road.

Yes we are "house n*ggers" as mentioned by another poster. We just have to put up with it sometimes.

  9. An old time bar-owner in Chiang Mai used to tell everyone how he'd gone to a village where he'd never been before. They trotted out all the single women who stood in line and he'd pointed to one and paid cash on the barrel-head for his wife.

They were together for years and had a lovely daughter. Eventually she left him for a younger man, but I can not say that I blamed her.

    What a load of rubish.

It's bullshit stories like this that gives Thailand a bad name!

I think your "old' time bar owner" mate has had a few too many in his time :whistling:

It's not such a bull shit story as you make it out to be.

I also saw a TV documentary in Denmark about a couple of Danes who came over to buy wives. They were quite disgusting people, dirty, never fully dressed and always had a cigarette in the mouth. They came over bought wives and took them back to Denmark. The wives couldn't speak English, the men couldn't either.

The TV interviewed the girls and they said that they didn't love the men but that they were happy to have someone take care of them. Later when they learnt to speak Danish they developed some kind of affection for their husbands.

The girls managed to get decent jobs and divorce the men but still remained friends.

I personally know a guy who bought 2 wives here.

He came over, looked through a catalogue, paid money to meet and marry a girl. He took her back to his country but after a few years later he was bored with her and threw her out.

He came back to Thailand and bought another wife. He decided to stay here but after 2 years he died suddenly of a "heart disease" or whatever they called it. He was in his mid-thirties.

  10. So lets see now I often arrive on an A380 holding about 500 people, lets say 2 arrive at the same time after my 13 hour flight and if Im not in business class (which I do often book on 1 segment just to avoid any delay when arriving) how long will I have to wait??? Thats about 1000 people hitting the desks at once.

As I understand it, it is the passport control when LEAVING the country not arriving at.

Last time I left bangkok at midnight and it took over an hour (about 1 hour 15 minutes) just to go through passport control so 24 minutes or less would be a blessing.
