  1. If you are heading for BKK then maybe check out Chatuchak market there. I have not been for a while, but before Covid there used to be quite a few places selling 'antiques' and older style stuff.
  2. I was in CM for a week mid November. Flights to/from Samui were full. Hotel so so. Walking around the Old City there were lots of tourists. Restaurants and bars were also busy. Nimman are was very lively.
  3. Everything is usually more expensive in the shops, restaurants and bars on the islands. Distribution costs. Both ferry and local costs. (We pay more for gasoline here on Samui.)
  4. I am with Moonlover on this one. I watched my son die slowly over two years. He had brain tumours. The last nine months were awful. He was a cabbage but his wife wanted him kept alive as long as possible. I am not happy dying, but I am not afraid of it. It is how you live that is important to me. If there is no quality in life then - goodbye. I discussed this with the doc when he asked if I was worried about prostate cancer. I said 'not worried'. We all die eventually. Until then, live life to the max.
  5. I have one of those as well. Registered is with BHS before my op. When I check in, I asked if they knew about it. 'Yes' When I saw the doc in the operating room, I asked if he knew about it. 'Yes' Same with the anaesthetist. 'Yes' Three outa three aint bad.
  6. I totally agree but after 7 years of 'issues', drugs, examinations etc etc I risked the side effects. Surgery was only one month ago but so far, the side affect are annoying but liveable.
  7. I pay for my own treatment. No insurance company. My last premium was over $12,000 USD and I had only claimed 3 times in 12 years.
  8. One of our security guards had a hoohah with a 'don't you know who I am' local Thai and punched him. The local called the police. 500 baht fine for the guard (which I paid).
  9. BNH Hospital in Bangkok is a very good hospital and they gave me a good price for a prostate biopsy (I self insure). I was seeing Dr Suntchai Wirotsaengthong back then. I have just had my prostate removed here at BHS Samui (Bangkok Hospital Samui). Good surgeon/staff. Tired and old building. Expensive. They eventually gave me a discount. Bangkok Hospital Phuket might have been a better option for me. Cheaper than BHS and a much better hospital/facilities.
  10. If you decide on KPN, I always stay at Maehaad Bay Resort. Next to a lagoon/beach and Koh Maa. Stunning sunsets. 700 square meter pool. I stay there for 3/4 days every February http://www.maehaadbayresort.com/
  11. So they did not test the software properly. Users found bugs and they are now trying to fix it.
  12. Then I suggest Choengmon or Maenam. Lots of choices at both. Usually good sunsets in February, so Maenam probably better for that reason - especially if you are with your partner. Lots of good restaurants with exceptional views.
  13. Off topic - deleted
  14. My wife worked as a schoolteacher until she died. I retired at 49 and started my own business here in Thailand. I am still working at age 72. Wife and I rarely spent day times together except holidays and some weekends Often, we were in different countries. I guess that absence makes the heart grow fonder as were were happily married for 30 years.
  15. That will be a heck of an increase for many Thais. Thank you PM (not). Stop wasting tax payers money on mega projects and help the millions of folk that voted you in.
  16. Just ethnic cleansing in another communist country.
  17. From the article Mind you. The placement of the drums on top of the deck ..............
  18. That is a very accurate statement. Pool pump costs - depends on how much your unit of electricity is and how long you run the pump. On a private development with electricity at 9 baht per unit and a heavily used pool, yes. 3,000 baht a month is probable. We run most pools here for 6 - 8 hours a day. Lots of tourists. My own pool , only 5 hours a day (4 x 10). I never use it - too busy. I built it for my wife but she died 7 years ago. I keep it going for visitors. Chemicals are relatively cheap but not having a shower, wearing suntan cream and clothes etc all need more chemicals. Water evaporation can be a factor if you do not have government water or a well, as can be maintenance when having to fix problems and emptying the pool. We have been in drought here for 10 months this year and truck water is 200 - 300 baht a cubic meter. Not an ongoing cost though. Those are the down sides. Upside - a pool usually adds value to the property. They look great and make for fantastic photos. It is so good to jump into the pool on a very hot day. Visitors (Thai and foreign) love pools as does some wildlife. I had a monitor lizard in my pool once. For me, the decision was made when my wife said "I do not care where in Thailand we live but I want sunsets and a pool." Happy wife, happy life.
  19. This government has taken a leaf from Prayut. ie get in the newspapers at every opportunity. I wonder why the FM did not go to Burma to accompany the Thais back from there?
  20. Well done that man. Cheapest publicity/advertising ever.
  21. Only Thais can vote. In a democratic country, this is called 'vote buying'.
  22. Same here. I live in a villa and only have a blue book. No name in it. WP and visa, all kosher. A number of bank accounts in different banks. You do not need a yellow book. You may need a rental agreement though depending on the bank. The last bank that I went to to open an additional deposit account wanted a POA from immigration. Immigration here do not provide these any more so I just went to another bank.
  23. But you are not including the price of flights, hotels and Vietnamese visas. Then there are the follow up trips and costs. These things are not a one off. When I had a colonoscopy, there was the pre consultation (with the anaesthetist) plus the follow up.
  24. Glad that you recovered OK.
