  1. Sad to see Governor Sethaput leave. He stood up against the government and did what was right for Thailand. Please, please let the next governor be another person who understands world economics and finance and not just another trough-feeding sycophant.
  2. I believe that to be just an excuse. Wait for the 'we need help' plea to the government. Here on Samui, there are a lot less visitors at the moment and our bookings are also down. And there was no earthquake here. Just low season started a bit early.
  3. Sadly, many tour operators and tourists do not listen.
  4. A couple of Pakistani's called Iqbal and a friend apparently.
  5. Road awareness seems to be missing from most drivers mentality. Old school driving instructors back in the UK used to teach us about being aware of what everyone is doing. Do not watch the vehicle just in front of you - look beyond that one and you can work out what he will do before he does. People that I know wave at me when I am out and about, and moan when I do not respond. I am watching the road. Not looking for friends. Yes, the songthaew driver should have slowed down when the out side vehicle slowed down, but that rarely happens here. I think that the outside vehicle hid the pedestrians from view until it was too late.
  6. Totally agree, but usually things change for the better. I first came to Thailand in '93. On the whole, Thailand has changed for the better - even Koh Samui, where I have lived for the past 25 years. However, Britain??? It does not look like a change for the better to me. I suspect that I will never be going back.
  7. Not sure that the 'thumbs up' vote is the right one on this article. Maybe ✊
  8. Back to the subject (ignoring the Muslim digs than that have taken over the thread)). Non drinkers have a choice. No one forces them to drink or not to drink. So mind your own business and do not tell other what they can or cannot do. Same with vegans - do not tell others what they can or cannot eat. Same with religion - you choose your religion, but do not tell others who or what they can believe in. It is supposed to be a free society, or did that die out when the woke brigade tried to take over.
  9. This could also apply to some folk who comment here on AN. AN is a public forum after all.
  10. as Thai authorities investigate them very, very carefully. Many, many times.
  11. I have heard that Bangkok Bank sometimes say yes. Friend of a friend managed to open one. You may have to try in a couple of different branches though.
  12. Oh dear. The blinkered few have woken up. These laws are flouted every day, not just at Songkran. They just weren't looking in the right places.
  13. A few subliminal messages here methinks. Red light, exit, cemetery. Those very lucky folk should buy a lottery ticket.
  14. Whilst I agree that it is a dumb thing to do, this has been happening for years. The first (and last) time that I did Songkran in Pattaya one guy was being driven around and spraying everyone whilst sat on top of the truck. And he was a Brit. That was back in 2000. I suppose that what happens in Pattaya is not allowed in 'hallowed' Bangkok.
  15. I have just been informed that Steve Green has passed away. Steve was the Chef at Oliver's steak House here in Bangrak and before that, older Samuians will remember him from the Premier Bar, again in Bangrak. I understand that there is more info on Facebook. RIP Steve
  16. Alcohol is always the scapegoat. What about the continuing increase of drug-fuelled violence? Never mentioned. Rarely tested for. There are no published numbers for the drug issues in Thailand but in the UK for example, in many areas, drug driving is more common that drunk driving. Especially among the younger population.
  17. From the official immigration website According to section 38 of the 1979 immigration act, “House owners, heads of household, landlords or managers of hotels who accommodate foreign nationals on a temporary basis who stay in the kingdom legally, must notify the local immigration authorities within 24 hours from the time of arrival of the foreign national.” https://www.immigration.go.th/?p=14721
  18. It depends on how incapacitated one is. For the worst case scenario, I have a living will with a DNR statement in it. I have registered it at the local hospital. Just to confirm things, I have told the cashiers that if I am completely incapacitated, no one will pay the bill. They got the message and it is recorded on my records.
  19. It is only a very large 'tax loss' because of Thailand's extortionate tariffs.
  20. I totally accept that there are 7 levels of heaven. Two young ladies in a Nuru massage place in Phuket once took me to level 5.
  21. It looks like this company is going for a 'grand slam' in fraud and other illegal practices.
  22. And the nasty, entitled little git who killed that policeman is still running around, as free as a bird. It is now nearly 13 years after he did it.
