  1. So the tourists had the nouse to send the GPS location, but they could not read a map.
  2. How many people for a 20,000 baht ferry? It's not 20,000 baht each. From what I can see it is 2,500 baht each way.
  3. Overnight ferry from Bangkok? https://www.facebook.com/fb.theseahorseferryofficial/
  4. One main reason that there are no public bins is because most people who live on Samui do not pay the garbage collection tax. (This is a country wide tax.) There used to be bins on the streets and they were heavily used, but the local government was loosing a lot of money on it . (The garbage trucks are contractors the last time that I enquired.) So they removed the bins. Most Thais burn their garbage or just dump it. Most foreigners just dump it at the places where those of us who do pay the tax have a collection point. All of our customers are registered with the Tessabaan and we pay the tax for them. We then take the garbage to a steel cage, on land that we rent, and it is collected by the trucks every day. I often see 'strangers' dumping their garbage in our cage. (I drive past it daily.) There are about 100 properties on the development where I live. Apart from the 20 or so that we look after, most , if not all of the others, do not pay the tax. The worst offenders are the large 4 -6 bedroom properties. The owners have lots of money but they have short arms and deep pockets. How many folk reading AN pay the garbage tax? The last time I asked, many said 'I only rent - it's not my problem'. But it is your garbage! We moved to Samui in 2000. Stayed in a hotel for a while and the hotel put bottled water in the bathroom for us to wash with and to flush the toilet. For a shower, we went in the sea. There was a water shortage. As Paul wrote - it is not so rare.
  5. Calm down with the 'anti' speech. There was a similar thing in the news recently about a Thai guy being fined after driving his car on the beach. Lots of reporting of Thais being arrested for sexual abuse, murder, theft etc infinitum.
  6. Liar, liar pants on fire! Neutral is not when you help the military generals to move their illegal money through a Thai airport yet you stop and arrest Burmese citizens when bringing two drones into Burma.
  7. And how did the guys get the lighters through security before boarding. They are banned.
  8. People's views on Samui differ depending on their lifestyle. Many people trash Samui as all that they see is Chaweng and Lamai - which are the main tourist towns. My D-I-L and grandchildren are here for their fifth Songkran over the last 12 years. They think that Samui is great. They love it. Quiet beaches and beautiful scenery. Stunning views from many restaurants. Good food and lovely local folk. They never go to Chaweng, Lamai or Fisherman's Village.
  9. Not sure about that. I am a director in a Thai company that I do not own but I did set it up 20 years ago. Originally, the company paid the SS but then, some years later, as a director, I had to set up a recurring transfer in my private bank account to pay the SS. Company can no longer do it. I still pay 432 baht every month. Pink id name is usually in Thai - show your passport or Thai driving licence?
  10. One might be bright and cheerful if it save one's life.
  11. We have a couple of small Thai rental units that we use for storage and a 'rest place' for staff when they are tired or lunch and their home is further away. They were on government water until recently. Now none. Nothing in the press though.
  12. And after the surrender, the bombing and shelling by the junta will start? And Thailand arrests folk taking drones into Burma.
  13. Well done. So do I and my conscience does give me a bit of a kick up the backside at times. Then the old head in its twilight years says, but Thailand is a lot better than most other counties at the moment. The real people are lovely. The food is great and the beer is cold. So here I stay. But Burma is a very sad situation for its people - who are just as lovely. I have no idea about the food and the beer as I will not go there and 'support' the corrupt military.
  14. Well done. Here on Samui I cannot find any a/c company that will give me scheduled maintenance on the units in the villas. When I ask, 'what's wrong with it' is the reply. We try and keep a schedule of when they were last serviced so that we can book the next one but then the a/c folk are 'too busy' when we call them. In reality, they want to install new ones in new builds, of which there are a lot on the island.
  15. So hypocritical of this government and they will do anything to help their military friends to stay in power illegally.
  16. I was always told that they flee the scene until the families of the two parties can come to a financial agreement. This is seen as preferable to taking it to court. (Lawyers costs etc.)
  17. A previous article on this story from a couple of days ago, said that they were draining the pond and 'cleaning' it up. Possibly, that is how they managed to find the bodies. They were already looking for them.
  18. And the government want us to believe that legalising casinos will stop illegal gambling.
  19. As long as Red Bull aren't involved On a side note - when guests are leaving Samui, airport or ferry, I advise them NOT to use GRAB. It is unreliable. But guests know better of course. Guest went to go to the airport a short while back. He called GRAB. Plai Laem to airport - 5,315 baht. (That is not a typo.) All of the taxis and vans were at the ferry terminal picking up guests from a cruise ship for island tours etc. 40 minute wait for our normal taxi service (depending on traffic). Other guests have missed flights because of cancelled GRAB bookings.
  20. At Samui airport, if pilots cannot see the end of the runway from a certain distance out (2 K's?) then they have to 'go round' a few times until they can or they re-route. This is usually during very heavy rain storms or low cloud.
