The "scary" reality for Thailand, is that the neighbors are making a real effort, improving, progressing, and creating a better environment for tourism. While here in Thailand, the environment is one of stagnation, regression, a total lack of vision, xenophobia, fear of foreigners, confused and muddled visa policy, and a baht that is far stronger than it needs to be, should be, or deserves to be.
No effort is being made to address tourist safety, or public safety in general. No effort is being made to address traffic safety and the horrendous amount of bus, mini-van, car, truck, and motorbike accidents on the road. No effort is being made to improve the highway patrol, or even get those incompetent clowns to patrol the highways, and pull people over for reckless driving. No effort is being made to address the understaffed immigration counters at DM, or Swampy. No effort is being made to tackle corruption on the part of the RTP franchisees. Quite the opposite. They are being deliberately protected. No effort is being made to address the myriad of environmental issues Thailand faces, whether it be the water quality, the air quality, the burning by farmers, the plastic epidemic, the extreme lack of trash cans throughout the nation, and a vast host of other issues. And finally, no effort is being made to reform the tourism ministry, separate it from the sports ministry (hair brained to the extreme), or improve the TAT. Nothing.
The army is doing nothing, to benefit the people, or tourists. Absolutely nothing. Perhaps even less than zero. Perhaps the name should be changed from the Thai Army to the Nothing men. Of course tourism is dropping. Why would it not be dropping?
So, all down hill then!

All true Garybaldy. The thing is, many have strong roots here now and would find it very difficult to up sticks and go elsewhere.

The fact that kitchens don't have hot water even pushes me more towards getting one (as washing greasy dishes is a PIA with cold water).
Can cold water clean dishes?
This is for all the germ conscious folks that worry about using cold water to clean.
John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Georgia.
After spending a great evening chatting the night away, John's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking, "Are these plates clean?"
His grandfather replied, "They're as clean as cold water can get them. Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!"
For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again, John was concerned about the plates as his appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, "Are you sure these plates are clean?"
Without looking up the old man said, "I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you fret, I don't want to hear another word about it!"
Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass. John yelled and said, "Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car".
Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted .
"COLDWATER, GO LAY DOWN!!!!"

You mean those Buffaloes are the local hooligans ?
I certainly do. They are almost as bad as the extinction rebellion mob, blocking the road. They are not fussy about who's car they dent either, so yes, Hooligans.

I've lived in Khon Kaen province Esaan for the past 15 years, having moved up from Phuket It is the wife's home area and we enjoy a very easy life here. The other family members are not to close but close enough to visit on a day's outing from time to time. We have a small business which keeps us occupied and earns a reasonable income. It wont make us rich but keeps the wolf from the door.
It used to be a nice quiet area until the road was paved over.
Now we get the local hooligans disturbing the peace twice a day.

I'd call that B.S. I don't think I've ever cleared incoming Immigration in 50 seconds of the time from handing over my passport, and that was BEFORE they started their fingerprinting scheme, which clearly is making things longer.
Agree. And whats this about interview? Never happened to me.

Hmmm. At which point did Andrew Briggs call Thai people hell? He said the queues were hell for tourists, you idiot.
The obvious solution is manage it better and it can be done, with some common sense and planning and listening to others.
Common sense, planning and listening to others????... Never, never, never going to happen. On the other hand if it ever does. perhaps someone could lift me out of the box and prove it.

The pink ID card was very useful when I had a Vascular ligature operation in a large general hospital two weeks ago. Private room for two nights, one before and one after the op. Service was exceptional and many of the nursing staff spoke English. When the bill was presented, I asked if I could stay. Cheap as chips was an understatement, I've spent more in a 4 star hotel for two nights.

It all depends on where you live and what you personally want.
I live in 'my own' house in a a rural village but only 30km from Phitsanulok City where there are the usual Tesco, Big C, macro, Immigration, restaurants, etc. Go there twice a week. Also go to local vegetable markets twice a week
My day usually begins at 5.55 am, turn phone on for BBC midnight news. Check emails, currency, blood pressure, and have a pee. Take dog for walk/shit, back home to make a cuppa for me and coffee for gf. during which time I log onto TVisa to see who's dissed me !!!!! LOL
My day revolves around cooking, wine-making, watching catch-up telly or downloaded movies, listening to music, Popmaster, Countdown, playing Scrabble online. I used to be a professional musician so spend quite a bit of time recording on my PC, write some songs sometimes. Maybe mow my lawn and cut the hedge now & then. I am happy with my own company and my gf has so many friends I sometimes only see her morning and night....peaceful.
I would like to know a little more about the 'wine making'. Where do you get the yeast from?

I find soi dogs can be very aggressive, but they are only defending their territory in most cases. Also, dogs can become aggressive if they have food and see the intruder as a threat. I usually carry a walking stick when out locally. It just needs to be pointed at the dog to make it back off. No point hitting the dog, which will only makes it more aggressive. On the other hand, you have a means of defense if required.

why does it flash at night time in one room. In other room at the hotel it doesn't flash
Could be due to a fault, Can't be sure as ours do not flash, they are always on. However, in the room which doesn't flash, is the WiFi being used?

The larger one is a Wi-Fi access point. We have five of them to cover three floors, work a treat
The smaller one is a smoke alarm.
Sent from my ZX Spectrum using dial-up.????

Buddhist holidays and alcohol bans always make me smile.
The same old miserable drunks trying to rationalize how it's not fair for the non Buddhist's or tourists on holidays or small businesses or how they can beat the law and buy from Mom and Pop stores, or sadly sit in a dimly lit bar drinking beer from coffee mugs.
It's like a Groundhog Day thread.
I think you will have to explain 'Groundhog' day.

All these prohibited times of being able to buy alcohol and the nut case bans on Buddha days, is one reason why Thais get drunk so much.
