  1. The truth is that moderators are trying to keep SENSITIVE ARGUMENTS out of this forum, in order to avoid fights, offences, .....

This is particulary true for US related stuff (Bush, war in Iraq), politics and in this case also for the Bali sentence (bacause is more a political case rather than a court case).

On this forum there are people who can be against Corby or in her favour, and not knowing each other means fights, offences, statements on Corby, or worst on Bali or even worst on OZ.

This shoudn't happen in a Forum dedicated to Thailand, the moderators consider the damage (possible) higher than the fun inreading that posts and their replies.

So if I post something about a POP singer, it's fine and normally it doesn't end into a fight, but if someone posts: "I LOVE BUSH", of course half of the people on this forum will disagree and many of them (includ. myself0 also in a "pulp way" which doen't mean to offend anyone, but in any case can be rude and misunderstood!!

  2. Normally the shop where you purchased the oil paint has this material .....

at least the tube is widely available, just check any "mailbox etc" office or just enquiry to the local DHL/UPS.

Otherwise a stationery shop with a good variety of stuff, and many times bookstores which sell banners.

I used to buy a cheap banner/poster and use the tube for my paintings, because the poster+tube was cheaper than the tube in the stationery shop!! Of course the paster is now shining in the room of a nice BG, reminding her of the generous guy who cured her sick Buffalo!!!

  3. Taxis in BKK's airport are cheap and easy to get. Just queue 5 minutes, pay 50 baht (1 Euro!!!) surcharge and ask the driver to use the toll way ....... one of the easiest cities in the world!!!

The worst experience in my life was on NY JFK airport, a real mess with coloured big guys talking to you in a language (the say it's slang) they only understand in the Queens, overcharging you, ........

.... ops Miami is even worst, but at least I can speak spanish much better than the NYC slang :o

  4. In every country there are pros and cons.

It's up to you to use properly all these info, anyway the fact that ur wife has experience in HK is a very good thing.

Just last tip: I found very useful to buy on amazon 1-2 books on cultural shock in Thailand/Bangkok.

Most of the info on those books were very obvius, but in any case was a nice recap of all the things to be done or not to be done.

    a few $ ...... which indeed I charged to the company :o

  5. Probably the hardest thing to learn is how to react when you do come off....most people tense up in anticipation...it is much better to try and stay loose and flow with it.

Easier said than done, but I agree, it's the same as having a fall when you're drunk, you're less likely to sustain injury if relaxed.

It is always better to come off when you are drunk. I have done it a few times and I’m convinced it saved my life on at least two occasions.

I bought a helmet in Lotus for 249 baht. I dropped it the other day while trying to put it on (I was sober). The helmet split in two; do you think this helmet was a fake/copy?

$249 baht for a helmet??? I eat dinners over here for more than that!!! :o

You must be one of those rich farangs :D

For such a quality of helmet you just wasted 244 Baht, when I want to ride with lower protection I just use a 5 Baht condom on my head ...... it fits perfectly :D

  6. I gained weight because:

    1) too hot, polluted and humid to exercise outdoor

    2) many business trips (lunches and dinners with clients)

    3) business trips means also vine and beers in the evening

    4) aircon 24/7: I don't sweat much

    5) I don't drink enough for this climate

    6) coffee (with sugar) 5 times a day

    .......

I would love to enjoy some wild nightlife but the "dog" (my wife) is watching me very close :o

  7. well said moebius, in BKK you can live in a very nice and confortable way and if you don't excess in alcohol or "night life" you can save as much as 80% of your salary.

IN Europe I was saving ZERO, here I'm saving a lot and this will be the pillow for an early retirement. I want to retire having still many years to enjoy.

You don't have to live in a eggshell either in BKK, if you come here you must accept the pros and cons and live your life, staying 24hr/7days in a condo/compound is not healty ..... in thic case just kiss the head of a kid and you will go in a US jail for 20 years singing "thriller" to your gay jailmates :o

  8. living in Sukhumvit with a toddler ...... not the best.

It's also true that compounds "US Style" with Houses+garden, security, expats, will cost you much more than 40,000 baht!!

With 40,000 baht = 1000$ you can get a nice 1500 sqft apt in a very nice condo.

    Difficult choice

  9. As said a trip should be made but let it be long enough to see life outside of the 5 star hotels.

For this reason I was suggesting him at least 1 week, 2 would be better not for house hunting but to understand how's life in BKK

Regarding wife: this is true, Thai girls are very beautiful, slim, smooth skin, ...... probably the most beautiful girls in the world ...... and your wife (with no job) would have plenty of time to elaborate silly thoughs against you, but it all depends on your wife and how you behave.

Having a 21 years old secretary (as I have) makes somethimes the work day very long, and if you dream of her, before standing up to get a cup of coffee, you must be sure that noboby can spot something like a banana pushing out against your trousers!!! It's not just a joke.

Temptations will be huge, I saw many wifes going back to their home-country giving the hubby a deadlock: "I go tomorrow, If you love me you come with me", and the hubby: "sorry honey, but my contract and my company are not allowing me to move, bloooooody company :o:D:D

  10. As for DOT, you know that manufacturers determine for themselves whether a helmet meets the DOT specs, right? It's based on the honor system. :o

    sorry

    sorry

    sorry

    ............

But the international specs are not based on honor system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are independent laboratorie which test these helmets before granting a certificate and they keep testing from the shelves on a sample base severel times every year.

Competitors matching the requirements will keep an eye on that, so that they might spot a manufacturer producing not good quality stuff.

The problem of Thailand is that a serius shop will be selling you a real helmet with a true specs, a small shop will have an ARAI for sale @ 2000 baht, fake ARAI and FAKE SPECS.

But this is a CRIME also in BKK!!!

Your head is inside that helmet and if you are thinking to buy ARAI for 2000 baht, then your brain was already damaged before buying that helmet!!!!

I see many people posting BS, with no eperience nor expertise at all, just willing to post something and hidden by the nickname giving wrong advices and writing totally wrong things.

This is pretty common on TV, probably is the side effect of the Viagra in the morning.

Let's give this guy a fair advice, he has to put his head inbside that helmet. a 65GBP helmet purchased on Ebay might be a deal or a fraud, since custom painted HD helmets are generally dangerous for a real accident:

    1) you don't know which kind of paint has been used, and the wrong paint will totally screw the helmet making it stiff and no more protective anymore

    2) Was this helmet a regular one or not?? Which brand/safety mark was carrying??

I would never buy an helmet air brushed on Ebay (may be to keep in a crystal cabinett yes), because later on I'd have to buy a wheel chair on Ebay, and shipping costs will kill my deal!!

  11. Dude

If I had no experience of overseas living (even if you're Brit in CT or NJ) and had to decide for any Asian destination, I would take 1 week off and jump on the first flight to BKK and have a look.

Pollution is a problem, cultural shock is another problem (mainly for expats spouses), food is another problem (I love Thai food).

If you have no colleagues to give you a fair advice, come to BKK and have a look.

In the range of 1000$ per month you can find a nice 1500 sqft apt with all facilities you can imagine to dream (pool, gym, tennis, squash, ....).

But living BKK is not just staying in a "golden cage"!

My advice is that LOS (or BKK same) is a wonderful place and that you will love it.

But this is only my advice, you don't know me and may be we are totally different and what I like, you hate!!

Would you live in Manhattan?? If no, then don't even come here! If Yes, then BKK is a mix between Manhattan and a messy (and funny/wonderful) Caracas.

For sure you have to rent an apt near a skytrain (or subway) station and not too far from your office, since driving or taxing in BKK is a mess.

Don't choose BKK just for money, choose BKK because you like it, otherwise will be a disaster for you and your family.

The first impression on BKK is negative (almost always), then after a week you will love it or hate it. If you fall in love for LOS will be forever, like a bug eating your brain and you won't leave it easily, but if you cannot accept and understand the cons of this city, better to stay in US.

Thailand is a wonderful country, but is messy, polluted, and you have to learn (will take about 6-8 months) a long list of unwritten rules and laws on how to live and solve day by day problem.

  12. What's gotta happen is the guy (or gal) has to hit rock-bottom before there's any improvement.

One of the things I love about Thailand is when a man reckons he's "over the line", he checks himself into the local Wat for an extended stay.

I have a brother-in-law in this situation and he's happier now than he's ever been and doesn't plan to ever leave the Order.

What the ###### of advice is this?? This is a serius post and if you have nothing to say, don't screw the post!!!!

Yes now all the alcoholist in the church becoming monks and all the prostitutes becoming nuns!!! Such qualitity of an advice!!!

Rock bottom??? Was it on a porno DVD???

My Grandpa was alcoholist and I can tell you that there is no rock-bottom at all, the sooner you act the better it is (also for the health).

Only professionals (AA) can do something.

Have you been drinking too duke? Boons responce was resonable and going to a Temple here can help many people.Just because your grandfather was an "alcoholist" dosn't mean that everybody is the same!

OP, try taking a hidden video of him when he is drunk. If you show him it when he is sober, it might make him seek help. :D

Alchoolism is a srius/true sickness, unless inside the temple there is a AA branch .....

May be we should suggest this wife to ask her husband in Europe to seek for a Buddist temple (or a church) and pay a visit, ......

We are talking about his health and life, not his soul

    Bud...you don't have a clue... :o

Both!!! May be you don't have that clue and just feel pissed cauz you feel like a little baby caught with the hands in the jar!!!

  13. your husband is a selfish man.

he chose the road he now finds himself travelling on.

if he wants to stop he will.

if he doesnt want to stop he wont.

he is responsible for the sorry state he is in.

i dont go much on counselling or sympathy for those addicted to alcohol , drugs or tobacco.

    you married a weak man.

if he has will power and can appreciate and accept the support of a wife then he will stop.

if he doesnt stop then get out.

dont let him drag you down into a depressive existence with no way out.

he only thinks of himself , there must come a time when you have to think of your future.

You are right! Only weak people fall into that.

But we are all weak in some moments of our life, some are luckier some others are not.

When you have a beloved fallen in such a s h i t the only thing you can do is to help him, no need to know why and what. Just help him with professional approach, books, movies, suggestions from friends are only delaying his recovery. If the situation is bad (as described), only a medical/psicological approach can restore him to a normal life.

  14. Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will bring a couple of decent lids from UK

    ( better safe than sorry)

a little tip: when you fly and may be your luggages are already overweight or more than 2, how to bring the helmets??

Simple: you declare the helmets as sport gear (like golf clubs) and they do not count in terms of weight and pieces of bags.

It's a "small" extra that all flight companies use to grant to traveller with passion for sport (snowboard, sky equip. golf equip, surf board all travel for free).

Check with your airline, the only hassle is that probably you have to check them in in a different counter and fill a form in which you ease the company from responsability.

    ..... same for music instruments

  15. It's cool, Meadish. I'm just sick and tired of the same old same old America-Bashing that never ends. That "agent" was driving at a "high rate of speed" from ALL accounts. Proven by satellite. He did not alert the authorities that he and the Italian "journalist" were going to be coming thru AND, he refused a legimate command to halt.

There is this small thing called WAR going on over there... :o

I would say that I'm sick of all these lies.

There is no proven that the car was high speed, bon't bullshit with satellite, this is invented by you right now.

No Halt was given and this was confirmed by US authorities.

Yes there is a WAR over there and war has to be made by soldiers not by recalled unemployed americans ....... (this is a fact)

Having said that and after having visited the Museum of WAR crimes in Ho Chi Min City, I fully support the resistance and the battle for freedom, the terrorists are the ones who can act like in Abu Gravi and being sentenced to "candies"

  16. Have a look at the Little Mermaid in Kata Centre (Taina Rd).  They may be closer to your price range.

    Try here:  http://www.littlemermaidphuket.net/

Go to Asiahotels.com and search for the Hotels in Kata, then just check the order by customer feedback (at least this is the real fedback from real clients).

I will be in Kata on 25th June and I'm booking the Jiva resort and Spa for me and my wife (about 1500 baht), ..... if you want cheaper Serene Resort should be OK for you but the price is 1100 baht.

Kata is not cheap and negotiable as Patong, with 18 US$ per night is not easy to find something nice in Kata

  17. I am from L.A.  Here I can actually walk outside at night and there is food.  I've never been shot in Thailand.

don't listen to these hater posters.  Thailand didn't work out for them and they have to goto a board and try to bring others down.  Like any of us rather be in North Korea.

Technically speaking, North Korea is one of the safest places on this planet unless you're from US, Jap or South Korea.

But in LOS there is plenty of fun, nice locals and nice farangs to hang out, just to avoid tourists places.

    I stay here:

    1) money (expat manager)

    2) quality of life

    3) easy life

    4) CAUSE OF THE JET LAG, the mother company's calls are only in the afternoon, so even if I got some extra drinks the night before, I still have till 2 pm to have enough cofee in my blood to kill the "blond Tiger"

  18. I think the OP is a troll.

It might be a troll since the level of this English is too good for a Thai woman (no offence, sorry for the statement), but the argument is interesting and real.

When you have a person coming home totally drunk peeing in the drawer and vomiting on the fabric sofa, then you will understand what alchoolism really is!!

  19. ..... a good quality helmet in LOS cannot be cheaper than 8-10,000 baht.

    Don't play with ur life!!

Another little trick I use to do (most bikers in Europe do), keep inside your pocket always a little card with:

    Name/Surname/age

    blood type

    tel/address

if you are alergic to some medications

(.... and this is common practice in Europe)

    Only for LOS:

(write in this card both in English and Thai that if you're down in an accident, not to move you, to wait for the ambulance ......).

The hige difference between the west and LOS is that if I find a biker down on the road I first check his shoulder pocket (in the jacket) for the "instructions" and I will never move the biker ..... here in Thailand you must manage to give the first one stopping to help you that card (which might save you from a wheel chair).

No matter whether is a 200Kmiles bike or a vespa, I had a friend (I have a friend, since he is still my friend and happily alive) who lost a leg in a stupid low speed accident with a scooter ....

  20. What's gotta happen is the guy (or gal) has to hit rock-bottom before there's any improvement.

One of the things I love about Thailand is when a man reckons he's "over the line", he checks himself into the local Wat for an extended stay.

  21. Its also naïve to think there are not injustices, corruption and negativity in the Western, so called 1st world.

What should the wife of the Italian agent say when the US soldier who killed him was found not guilty??

Well, that "agent" fcuked up - plain and simple.

Shouda driven the speed limit and stopped when required. :D

May be ..... but if a naive soldier shoots before asking the car to stop, just because he had no training, I understand now why it's so easy for Iraq resistance to get ridd of all the US chickens ....

Vietnam was a sugar drop, the bitter bite (Iraq) is coming soon on CNN>>>>

    :o

Well I guess that has a lot to do with why you stay in Thailand. Or probably more accurately you seem to want to turn everything into a negative, you must be a really happy person here.

You know you could start another thread yourself, just a thought.

I was really interested in hearing what the guys who have been here for years, had to say in refrence to what made them long term residents.

Build766 my apologies as you said post 14 nuff said.

    Actually Ray23

I'm the one who is wondering about your reply.

You should have attacked the one pissing me off, rather tha insulting me.

Yes I can start another 3d but I do not understand why, living in LOS gives me freedom .... isn't it??

I was one of the first ones to reply explaining with some examples what everyone else later wrote: Thailand is safe (or unsafe) as any other country in the west!!!

May be Ray, you stay here in Thailand because you never read nor understand what others want to say (me) .... and find it easier if a Thai doen'st speak a single word of english so that it's not a problem if you don't understand ...

take it easy, sun is shining and Viagra is widely avalable also tonight

  22. I ride a Ducati 998 here in LOS (not the only one :o ), so here my 2 pennies:

    1) Buy a good quality helmet in your home country. because also the Shoei or Arai here are too cheap (sometimes) and I do believe they are fake.

    2) If you go to a serius bike dealer the Arai and Shoei (or AGV) cost same of Europe, so the cheaper ones are defective ones or fakes.

    3) If you fall @ 80Kms per hours with a Ducati 998 or with a scooter, it's the same hit. Remember this.

    4) The difference between a quality helmet and a non quality one is not the life .... it's only the wheel chair.

Buy a good one, being expensive you will take much more care of it (than a cheap one) and at the end it will last much more and result cheaper (cheaper than buying 2-3 crappy ones).

ps. I have AGV for myself
