  1. What's gotta happen is the guy (or gal) has to hit rock-bottom before there's any improvement.

One of the things I love about Thailand is when a man reckons he's "over the line", he checks himself into the local Wat for an extended stay.

I have a brother-in-law in this situation and he's happier now than he's ever been and doesn't plan to ever leave the Order.

What the ###### of advice is this?? This is a serius post and if you have nothing to say, don't screw the post!!!!

Yes now all the alcoholist in the church becoming monks and all the prostitutes becoming nuns!!! Such qualitity of an advice!!!

Rock bottom??? Was it on a porno DVD???

My Grandpa was alcoholist and I can tell you that there is no rock-bottom at all, the sooner you act the better it is (also for the health).

Only professionals (AA) can do something.

  2. Its also naïve to think there are not injustices, corruption and negativity in the Western, so called 1st world.

What should the wife of the Italian agent say when the US soldier who killed him was found not guilty??

Well, that "agent" fcuked up - plain and simple.

Shouda driven the speed limit and stopped when required. :D

May be ..... but if a naive soldier shoots before asking the car to stop, just because he had no training, I understand now why it's so easy for Iraq resistance to get ridd of all the US chickens ....

Vietnam was a sugar drop, the bitter bite (Iraq) is coming soon on CNN>>>>

    :o

  3. or try Krabi, may be is the right place for you

Ah... hadn't thought of Krabi.... might be a little better than Phuket, just may lack the nightlife you are looking for. :o

    totster :D

.... may be not a nightlife with hundreds of tourists, but if you go there for 6-7 months, you will find nice places, good friends, and a lot of fun, I nicknamed Krabi "MI Casa" (My home) since one day I want to retire there

  4. also because many tourists play with danger here in Thailand ......

    looking for troubles.

If you stay away from drugs, prostitution, gambling and respect the culture of Thai people, then this place is safer than Manhattan!!!

  5. Its also naïve to think there are not injustices, corruption and negativity in the Western, so called 1st world.

I agree, there is much more injustice in the US than in Thailand.

What should the wife of the Italian agent say when the US soldier who killed him was found not guilty??

What should the victims in Iraq jails say, when the female soldier was sentenced only to few months??

come on guys, don't come here to teach us how to pee!!!

  6. I belong to the category of well paid managers from overseas companies ....

but I know LOS very well and my personal point of view in the failure of many business in Thailand is that some foreigners come to Thailand thinking that their experience, knowledge, in a such messy country will make them rich or will make them live happily with 2 hours of work everyday (may be less ....)

So the mistake is not in Thailand itself, but in the wrong perception of this country, which is indeed much more competitive of what appers to be!

Most of the foreigners have to understand that 99% of their expertise (on a 8 working hours a day) will bring them about 3-400 Euro per month!!

If they want to work 2 hours a day and earn 4000 Euro, then they are "the problem" not Thailand.

Most of the foreigners (unsuccesfull ones) I met in the past 4 years were unsuccesfull people also in their own country, thinking that emigrating to Thailand was a "competitive advantage" to boost their loser life in the west: loser in the west means 100% will be a loser also in Thailand!!!

Here people can be happy with 1$ a day and a bowl of rice!

  7. Come on DJ

You're a cheap Charlie, browsing for free every day!!!

Enjoy your life and do not care too much about other's life, indeed if I tell you what those expat ladies told me about you, you will jump from the balcony in Pattaya today:P

  8. Come to LOS

I've just to get used to:

    1) In LOS there is no traffic Jam as in the countryside of Belgium

    2) Also the wheather is different and you will never enjoy anymore the wonderful winter of North Europe, leaving home in the morning when is dark and the road is iced, coming back at 5 p.m. when is already dark and the ice still there waiting for your car ....

Now if you want some fun you have to drive to Amsterdam (unless you've a lot of money to waste in Brux), in LOS you can have fun everywhere, but don't touch the drug!!!!

    It's mine

  9. By the way Dankali, who originated this post wanted to get info on the expat life regarding expatriates living like a Thai!!!!

    Indeed you're a genius!!!

Personal attack, not at all, I always liked you, in bed with me you're fantastic!! :o

I'm sure that a person takes time to open a post to check whether there are expats living like a Thai or just a little bit more .... yes of course it's the dream of everyone to drop the western lifestyle and come here to live with 40,000 Baht (including house rental, car, everything).

Who asks for expat style of living (no dictionary required) wants to know how much does it cost to have a reasonable (not luxury):

    -- apartment

    -- car

    -- food

    -- clothes

    -- social life

-- may be some trips either domestic or Far East

If I would tell you where to put the dictionary, then I will damage myself having no place to play with you anymore .....

    :D:D

  10. As I mentioned before, I spend about 40,000/month living a comfortable life with my girlfriend. I could live the aforementioned real "expat life" if I chose, but I prefer the way I do things now. I bet there's lots out there like me as well.

    Just my 2 cents.

you can live also with your 2 cents per month but this is not expat life and you're not answering the post ......

Is that humidity to have killed the neuron left in the brain??

Expat life is the life of someone sent by a company to work in Thailand with a proper package in terms of $$ and benefits, this kind of lifestyle costs much more than 40,000 baht per month.

  11. I think someone needs to precisely define "expat lifestyle".

400 baht for pizza and beer? How long ago is it since you had pizza and beer in USA or Europe? You will easily pay twice that amount. What is the problem? :o

NO proble at all ...... just that a good restaurant for 150 Baht are B/S.

I love my pizza @ Lemoncello near Ambassador Hotel, it's wonderful

  12. don't listen to them, they are all pissed off because smoking weed you can enjoy free accomodation (and since you're gay) become the "girlfriend" of many Thai men sharing the same bed and same room.

Than you have 2 meals per day (free) and 1 hour sighseeing every day with the protection of the police in a sary safe yard.

You don't have to work to earn money, just come and enjoy what Thailand can offer to a smart Briton like you :o

  13. GUYS THE POST IS: WHAT IS THE EXPAT LIFESTYLE

You can live in Thailand and be the worn man with 10 Baht a day or you can try to buy Liverpool FC, but the question is about Expat Lifestyle!!!!!

If you're so good to live with 2 kids on a 53,000 Baht/m, this is fine but don't classify it as Expat Lifestyle, pleeeeeeease

    :o:D

  14. desktop and HiFi = it's more expensive and dangerous to ship rather than buy new ones in Europe.

My HiFi (relocation paid by company) got broken during inspection!!

Another solution (for small items and small packages) is to try to use the post service and hope not to clear custom in Europe (in this case may be VAT is applied on the declared value, declared value reasonable but mainly UP 2 U)

  15. Better to use a shipping company (to prepare all the paper work with both customs) and try to bring as much as he can with him in the plane.

Shipping by boat will take about 30-40 days (where in Europe?) and we just relocate an expat with 100 Kg / 1 cubic meter (shipping companies work more on cubic meters than kg) and was very expensive, just for the documents about 300 Euros + shipping, if I'm not wrong 250 Kg (let's say 2 cubic meters) all in all should cost your friend not less than 600 Euros, may be more.

Most of expats take their belongings in different flights (also with the help of some friends who keep the balance @ their homes for quite a while or delivery some of the goods when they come back to home country 4 vacation as well) and try to sell the most locally.

Further expenses are related to the delivery from European port to door and to anti-terrorist law enforced recently by some european countries which apply an additional tax to every shipment to cover the costs of a deep inspection by the custom police (in U.S.A. is about 1,000$ extra each 20 feets container and is killing the export of some european conpamies).

  16. beh Chanchao 10$ to each monk looks pretty much cheap Charlie!!!

I said 200$ in total as Farang, I have only experience on the celebration of the opening of our factory, 10 monks = 500US$, and they probably were satisfied but not dancing on the table at all (may be they were expecting something more).

Can you please give me some address of the factory where you bought the wedding gift for 15 Baht and provide (if exists) of a WEB site where I can check what they have for sale??

In a few months I will have the same problem with my wedding and I would like to give my guests something nice, useful, but not toooooo pricy :o

  17. Yes Mike

just confirming what I posted yesterday: about 50,000 Baht + House rent + car

You have your own house and a car.

Considering the interests you might get from the money invested in your House (should you sell your home and rent a similar one), to have a decent EXPAT LIFE you need from 80,000 Baht to 90,000 Baht per month (all inclusive).

If you're single you spend some more money in pubs (may be girls) and travelling all around Far East, if you're married you spend the same amount of money in Kids, education, dogs. More or less nothing changes is just a different cost allocation.

ps. English teachers are living OK in BKK, but they cannot call it "EXPAT LIFE" and the question was "What is the Expat Lifestyle".
