Seems from following the thread that the ENGLISH man at the embassy was trying to be helpful by granting a 'trial; interview for free. That saved about 3500Baht and has let you know what is required, and a reasonable indication of success?

Wht not hang on until September when you come and can at least not be pulling your hair out from 8000 miles away.

Would try to look at all the positive sides here. Your GF HAS NOT been refused a visa, just advised that CURRENTLY isuing one is unlikely. Sounds like a succesful day trip to me.

On a practical note there is ABSOLUTELY NO need to stand all the way to BKK ever. THe buses run from the bust station in Pattaya to BKK for 90 baht and it is all ticets. One seat per person. Nobody satnds!

It is perfectly feasible to buy a one way ticket to Thailand and then choose the next destination whilst here. Just do not overstay

officially the 30 day visa on entry requires a return ticket and funds check on arrival buy have never seen this happen.

What do you need to apply for in US?

the 30 day visa is given freely to pretty well everyone.

I am pretty sure that if you want to gain a stronger visa and employment you will be required to leave the country to apply for it so you might want a return ticket if a saving?

Suggestion::

Go to one of the banks and ask about their terms and conditions.

It is NOTHING to do with the Visa.

The Banks say for example ---you can not close account unless you lose half the cash -- then that would be your choice. Obviously exagerated example;-)

The Visa only requires notification as per your quote.

Bank rules are what you need to know.
