    It was eighty yeas ago.......

    So.

The ingredients, equipment and process required to operate a still are still the same today as they were back then. You can even buy a ready made still today on line from Amazon.

The Thais could improvise with some plastic tubing, copper pots and a Camping Gaz stove!

Gin, vodka and whiskey can easily be made at home.

I truly believe that if McArthur had been ok'd to drop the bomb in China 70 years ago, the entire world would have been much better off now.

China would then have nuked Japan and other allied nations in Asia.

If they did not have nuclear weapons back then their chums in the USSR would have helped them out. It was the time of the Cold War.

We in Europe lived under the threat of a nuclear holocaust and we realised how fragile the peace was. It was not worth the risk, that's why McArthur was told to behave himself.

Yes, and Churchill also died an irredeemable drunk and was a vile racist who was fanatical about violence and imperialism. Not exactly a great person when you examine his life and history with a rational mind.

Winston “"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes," Churchill. That’s a direct quote. NOBODY should ever look to Churchill as anything other than a complex monster who happened to lead his nation competently, although flawed, through a crisis.  He is not a hero or an inspiration at all. Any historian will tell you this.

Those uncivilised tribes were in the Middle East where poison gas has been used comparatively recently. Look at Iraq and Syria. Their leaders had few qualms about using it against helpless civilians just a few years ago. WC had merely suggested its use.

Churchill also considered using poisoned gas against Germany in 1940 especially as Germany had earlier introduced the use of gas as a weapon in 1915.

When the concentration camps were discovered in 1945 many people wished he had especially Jews and Freemasons.

Chlorine gas and mustard gas were and are chemical weapons. As is the substance that started this corona virus.

As for his being a 'vile racist' it was under his leadership that Britain invited thousands of West Indians and people from the sub continent to come and settle in the UK. Hardly the actions of any kind of racist especially a 'vile' one.

He'd warned of the threat that China might one day represent. It now seems he was right. That does not make him a 'racist'.

If everyone were to do like you, you would have the same problem again. So the fault is still with immigration. You just been street smart.
A tourist is supposed to shop on flip flops, shorts and t-shirt actually, even that might look funny to us expats. Expecting otherwise is actually strange.
It is just what comes with tourism, curse of the spell (cow behaviour, complaining as its holiday time lost, poor clothing, hangover, shaving less etc).

If it were not for tourism and tourists there would be hardly any ex pats.

The vast majority of ex pats discovered Thailand as tourists. They liked the cheap prices, the weather and the women and decided to settle there.

I don't think Churchill envisioned a world shaking with fever due to negligence.

Churchill realised that China with its huge population, an authoritarian leadership, its production capability, its lust for global power and it's political ambition would one day be a force to be reckoned with and probably feared.

Many believe that he was correct. Coronavirus has helped to reinforce that belief.

China was already a communist country when Churchill issued that warning.

You're going a bit far back. China really did not get set on the path to its current economic status until Deng Xiaoping introduced economic reforms in the 1980's, which included opening up China to world trade, and freeing up capital internally. He was really the architect of modern China.

One could argue China was producing more steel than the US as far back as 1967. However, the steel they were producing then was absolute garbage.

    Many years ago Churchill said,

"Beware the sleeping dragon, for when she awakes the Earth will shake.”

That dragon he was referring to is wide awake now.

Asked my Mrs and 21 yr old step-daughter who was boss of USA....No f...ing idea, or boss of UK, France, Canada, Russia. Same

They don't even know which is N, S, W or East.

How many falang wives and 21 year old falang women know who is the boss of all those countries? Let alone who is the boss of Thailand.

I'm getting a bit tired of the Trump admirers who use "Trump Hater" as a label. Fact is, his initial downplaying of coronavirus is going to cost a lot of American lives and American jobs. COVID-19 cases in the USA are double that of any other country. While one can argue China is concealing the real number of infections, it's still a damning statistic.

Harry Truman kept a sign in his office saying the buck stops here. About time Trump was presented with one.

COVID-19 cases in the USA may be double that of any other country but their population is much larger than most other countries as well. More than quadruple that of most other Western nations.

  9. I recently had a fellow come to my door and as I live in London I don't normally answer my door but on this occasion I did.

He said in a polite manner, "I am doing a survey on TV licences, can I ask you a few questions?"

I replied "I don't have one neither do I have a TV set" in an equally polite manner and with that he said "thank you very much", turned around and left.

I thought no more of it until a few weeks later I realised I'd not received any warning letters since his visit. I used to get them on a regular basis each month.

So it seems that pretending to be conducting a survey is a new ploy their inspectors are using.

Yes i agree, but as i wrote before if a member posts a link where one can buy them online for a low price he 'll get banned so i won't post the link of my friend but i did put an order there for 100 N95 masks.

Informing people about where to buy the masks is performing a good deed. It's an important public service and should be encouraged

Such information can prevent the reader from contracting a disease and where this virus is concerned from possibly dying!

hahahahahaha, you actually believe the reported numbers coming out of Asia is accurate ?.

I'am selling a bridge if your interested, low mileage 1 owner etc etc

And do you actually believe the reported numbers coming out of Europe is accurate.

If the Prime Minister and next in line to the throne have contracted the virus it's more than likely that thousands more have or are expected to as well but we're not being made aware of it.

Why do you think that in the UK temporary morgues and hospitals are being prepared?

They are all useless... the masks that is.

Take a mask and lay it on a dry surface.

Sprinkle some dust from a vacuum cleaner on it.

You will find that very little or none at all of the dust will penetrate through to the dry surface. Shake the mask to remove the dust.

Then do the same with a spray of water from a trigger operated liquid dispenser on the same scale and of the same volume as particles of spray would be expelled by a cough or a sneeze. Bear in mind few people would actually cough or sneeze into someone's face.

Again very few particles would find their way through the mask to the dry surface.

While they are not foolproof nor totally effective the aforementioned experiment will demonstrate that they are hardly 'useless'. It takes but a minute or two to attach some sticky tape to the sides of mask where a gap could appear as that seems to be a major concern regarding these masks.

The plague is spreading like wildfire in Europe and the USA where few people wear masks for whatever reason!

    Total nonsense again

    How is it 'nonsense'.

Look at how rapidly the virus has spread in Europe where people seem to be reluctant to wear mask probably because they are unavailable.

And then compare how the virus is spreading in Asia where mask wearing is more common.

We know masks are not totally effective but I'd wear one if I could get them.

    Thank you for your concern.

FYI, it was mentioned in a number of posts above the one you quoted that I was helping my wife's family. If I'm helping a large family that is my wife's family, does that not count as help? Saying I'm helping my wife's family does not mean I don't help others too. There's no need to make assumptions. After a major typhoon I sent help for hundreds of people, so I don't always restrict my aid to family members... and I don't normally talk about it either, but another member suggested that I should get out and help people.

Who and how are you helping out Amy?

If she's anything like my Aunt Amy she's probably more than doing her bit.
