I wonder how many of us following this thread would grudgingly admit that we too were "old geezers"? -

Who got bored in Thailand and went back?
blazes replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
One solution of boredom is to do the 6 months here/6 months there routine. But for me, the main attraction of LoS is the weather. I come from the Pacific Northwest (Seattle/Vancouver) and hate the persistent rain of winter, and so the ever-present heat of Thailand is just what the doctor ordered. Back to British Columbia for the summers, where the heat is just right. The great advantage of modern technology is that you can entertain yourself no matter where you are by reading any book from any time or culture. Boredom banished. PS why is it that many people on AN are shy or embarrassed or secretive about where their "home" outside Thailand is? What psychology is at work there? -
BREAKING NEWS US tourist brutally stabbed to death in Phuket hotel

Surely a gay rendezvous gone bad? -
from a British Columbia newspaper this morning: A B.C. public safety coalition including “well-known B.C. retailers” will call for tougher policing on Monday. On Sunday afternoon, the coalition said it would release its platform on Monday morning in Vancouver and that it comprised “community and business groups, citizens, and well-known B.C. retailers.” According to a coalition release, it “wants governments to work together and act without delay on the growing crime and violence crisis in communities across British Columbia. “More and more British Columbians are afraid to walk in their own streets and shopping districts, employees fear being assaulted at work, and local businesses are losing millions from brazen in-store theft that leads to higher prices for B.C. families.”

I find this statistic very disturbing…something out of Brave New World…it used to be that Sweden was the leader in this kind of thing, but how did Canada come to this pass? Begin forwarded message: Date: 25 October 2023 at 15:40:23 GMT-7 View this email in your browser Curated by the National Post's own Tristin Hopper, First Reading is a Canadian politics newsletter published Monday to Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and noon on Saturdays. Sign up your friends here. Canada just released its annual report into the state of MAID (medical assistance and dying). And as expected, assisted suicide deaths went up last year ... by a lot. In just one year, what the government refers to as "MAID provisions" increased by 31.2 per cent. Assisted suicide is now Canada's fifth leading cause of death, and that's before the practice is dramatically liberalized next year to include everything from mental illness to drug addiction.

Good old ChatGPT missed out the much more famous novel, The Quiet American, by Graham Greene (1955), set in Vietnam and influential in critiques of American foreign policy in the 1950's. Also made into a movie. The subject matter of the novel deals with all the themes mentioned above (Lederer and Burdick).

In Asia, there is generally no problem with obesity (so, yes, this may just be an opportunity to gouge further). In the US of A on the other hand....

The worst mistake one tends to see on comment sites like this is: "would of" when they mean "would've". There is no such construction in English as "would of been proud of...." Of course to be absolutely correct, one could simply add two more letters and say "would have".

If Thailand refused you, where would you live? And why?
blazes replied to sidjameson's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
One of the great benefits of living in LoS (or indeed ANYwhere in Asia) is that if, like me, you don't spika de Asian, you don't have to hear people talking WOKE as they do in the Anglosphere. Alas, this benefit is too easily cancelled out in these unsocial media days by simply going to an Angloshere media website to learn the latest news. But to answer the thread question: Defo Spain (except for June to August). Cheap fruit and wine and wonderful cities and trains (FAST trains) to whisk you between cities. Seville or anywhere down south. #2 would be Penang, Malaysia, but the local religion is not exactly hospitable to alcohol. -

Totally agree. This gives hope for us all, especially as we get older and deportation seems less catastrophic. Natural death may come before the Immigration boffins knock on the door.... -

You mean, they did once "have" the plot? -
Excellent analysis. Totally agree. Amazing how well the analysis also fits virtually any modern government, including of course the US of A. Your mention of the Covid response and the way governments used it to exercise Soviet-style power would apply to the UK, Canada and many many other so-called democratic countries. Perhaps Thailand is a latecomer to the feast of the power elite.
