To address the OP question, if accurate, could well be the poor social services for the less fortunate e.g. Non State pensioners only receive 600 baht pcm for support. It seems US citizens have a bee in their bonnet regards providing assistance to the less well off, whereas nearly all other Western countries provide welfare services e.g. universal healthcare which appears to be anathema to many from the US.
