Passenger fined $1,874 after two undeclared McMuffins found in luggage
moogradod replied to Scott's topic in World News
I was always under the impression that Australians are easy, friendly persons. Obviousy not everybody. And Thai custom officials are very friendly as I have experienced. When you really want to be scared travel to Vietnam and meet the fiercest looking IOs I have ever seen. I even had the pleasure to witness by chance a change of duty with music and salutes etc. Really scary stuff that was. -
Pelosi expected to visit Taiwan, Taiwanese and US officials say
moogradod replied to Scott's topic in World News
Unfortunately you seem to be right. From what I read in the Swiss Press (Blick) it is not unlikely that a war will follow between China and Taiwan. They say that "Chinas army would consider options to not only perform military exercises but to attack as well military targets in Taiwan to end the tacit cease-fire with the Taiwanese army". Source (in German): https://www.blick.ch/ausland/scharfe-schiessuebungen-nur-wenige-kilometer-vor-taiwanesischer-kueste-china-will-taiwan-von-sechs-seiten-mit-militaermanoevern-einkesseln-id17759243.html and from the Global TImes (China): https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202208/1272075.shtml -
Passenger fined $1,874 after two undeclared McMuffins found in luggage

This is now the second case I know of. Not long ago a teenager took a Subway Sandwich with her but did eat only half of it and then got in the fangs of the Australian Custom Creeps for the rest half because it did contain chicken meat. Fine US$ (or Australian $, I dont remember) 2'000.--. I understand they want to protect the country but this is way too much. After all this meat is all cooked already. -
Why did you marry? And maybe why did you do it again?
moogradod replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Purest prejudice. I guess you did not even listen to the lecture - how can you make a judgement then ? You have to admit this sounds a bit like: "He is a republican, how can he be a good person" or even worse like "he is black, so ....". I am neither a strange believer only person nor new age disciple nor anything else which I would myself regard as not acceptable. How could I propose something if I am not sure it would benefit you which you could easily verify by confining some of your precious time ? -

Have a look at this guy - he will give you the answer. And on top it is quite entertaining, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RrCjzi74BA -
The visit of Nancy Pelosi is not as irrelevant as some posters here seem to think. Otherwise China would not have been reacting the way they did. Its about politics and sensitivity and Xi is tremendously sensitive. And if it is really true that Biden has indicated that the "One China" principle would be observed (not sure if I should believe this news) while at the same time meaning that it would be perfectly OK that China annex Taiwan without the US interfering he speaks with a forked tongue. For he did explicitely point out just not long ago that the US would at least assist Taiwan with its defense if not help directly in a conflic with China. If he would deviate from this then the US looses its last bit of credibility. Taiwan is an independed state by the way. As was Tibet.

Confusion reigns as EXAT announce new speed limits on expressways
moogradod replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Same thing for not wearing a helmet. You pay per day, not for the event. How does this match with the proposed "point" system ? If it is per day and you are in a hurry just drive as fast as you like, pay eventually the 500.-- if cought only to continue your race after that. Sorry Mr. Policeman, I did pay already for today ..... One time the slogan "Amazing Thailand" is as true as can be. -
There is a saying that goes (approximately) like this: If you want that raw rice sticks to a wall, someone has to throw it against it, but the wall must as well be sticky, otherwise the rice will fall down again and its all for nothing, so not worth the effort then.

This is not common knowledge. And I do not believe it. The only thing I can definitely confirm personally is that the danger of diarrhea increases if you eat soup from a street vendor. Might be because of the water they use which is maybe not the best because of cost (just my guess).

Terminating 12-month room contract
moogradod replied to topswijaya's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
I was told once by a brooker that it is commonplace here (not necessarily lawful) that a tenant is walking out anytime and looses his deposit and thats it. He further said that that many times the tenant does not even pay outstanding utility bills, let alone outstanding rental fees as stipulated by the contract. If you have rented via a broker maybe you ask him. Besides I feel it is always a good thing to part with consensus. So you might get approval from the Landlord if you talk to him. If the above is true then he would maybe not be happy but at least not furious. I believe (but do not know exactly) that this would not be a case for the court. Like the other way round: You leave and do not get your deposit back. This obviously happens as well at times. -
I think that has to do with prejudices and even some sort of xenophobia (maybe). People want to put you in drawers. Many Japanese believe that foreigners must love bread and not rice. So if someone refuses bread their worldview is shattered. This simply cannot be nor do they like it to be true. "lets have some bread" they say repeatedly and in despair. After all he is a foreigner and not Japanese (thats the xenophobic part). Maybe a bit like in Thailand ? I have even heard: Do you drive in Thailand ? (thinking maybe: how strange, this guy is a foreigner and not supposed to behave like a Thai, even if it is only such a simple thing as driving). But your experience makes absolute sense and you are not alone experiencing that.

Correct if you look only at the writing. This is the same in French and Swiss German. But the pronounciation is different. "Billet" in Swiss German may even not only mean "Ticket" but as well "Driving License". Languages are sometimes confusing and the source of misunderstandings. I recall the naming of one of the new Rolls Royce models years ago. They wanted to name it "White Mist". But Mist means "Dung" or "<deleted>" in German. They choose another name. (Comment: The <deleted> came up by itself from the aseannow website)

It is "Fahrkarten". "Billet" is a term from Swiss German, I am not aware that it is used in south Germany, but could be. Maybe close to the border. Swiss German by the way is a language so different from German that in the German TV subtitles are used, although some portion of it may be understood by a native German. I may say that I can speak Swiss German without any accent which I believe is quite rare for a German. Did sometimes invoke misuderstandings with authorities. Would be the same if you would be a foreigner but look like a Thai, speak perfect Thai and go to Immigration to ask about a renewal of a visa. In the first instance this would confuse the personnel.

No. Plattdeutsch is a dialect spoken in the north of Germany. Bavaria is in the south of the country. They have their own distinctive dialect, Bayrisch. If spoken to the extreme as well not easy to understand for a native German who grew up with High German, but Plattdeutsch is really like from another planet. Has its own dictionary.

No wonder. This is reflected in the school fees, here in Pattaya there are some schools that demand just for the basic school fee THB 800'000.-- per year. As for the qualification: I have been teaching both English and German (my mothertongue) as a small side job in Japan to some engineers and to a couple of hi-so daughters. I found it very much more difficult to teach my own mothertongue - because it is so natural for me that I did not know what the students needed most and in what order. I never learned German myself the way they needed to. So not only command of the language is of importance, but teaching skills specific to a language teacher as well.

No idea where that is but I will try to find out. No prob. Thanks.

Thanks but could you help me being a bit more precise ? Where in Pratumnak and what expat shop do you mean ? To my knowledge there are none on Jomtien itself. We live at the end of Na Jomtien and shop in Villa, Friendship, Tops especially for Japanese food,, Big C Extra, even at times at Siamburies and at the Time Out Bistro and rarely in this shop on Thepprasit opposite the bus terminal (forgot the name). For Indian ingredients in a soi opposite Soi Diamond near the Hindu temple. Then some markets like in Sattahib. A secret tip if the strawberry season arrives. ????

OK, Thank you. I know Hemingways. They have good Cider, too.

???????? Thank you. How about your Speckled Hen ? Any hint where this could be tasted in Thailand ? On a side note I regard Weihenstephaner Vitus to be one of the best beers available in Thailand. It is also available for sale - at least in Pattaya Central Festival (TOPS on the ground floor).
