Brit pensioner repatriated after Bangkok romance scam

British retiree Simon Charles Hill, 68, has returned to the UK after a romance scam left him homeless in Bangkok, unable to pay rent or buy food.

Hill, from Luton, had lived in Thailand for 11 years after retiring from his work as a UN flight operator. He had been living on a state pension of about GBP500 a month when he was contacted on Facebook by someone calling herself Emily Smith.

The supposed American woman, whose photographs showed her in sportswear, said she was due to receive a US$3 million inheritance. She told Hill that fees were needed before the money could be released and transferred to his bank account.

Hill said he made seven or eight payments over just under five months, sending his pension when it arrived and then exhausting his savings. He was eventually evicted from his apartment and spent several nights in the lobby of a hotel in Bangkok's Surawong area.

"I was able to sustain myself for a while, but it wasn't going to last," Hill said. "And that's when it dawned on me that I was actually homeless."

Charity found him weak and frail

The Bangkok Community Help Foundation (BCHF) found Hill at the hotel on July 9, describing him as "very frail and weak". By then, he had also overstayed his visa and was in Thailand illegally.

Hill said he had been advised by the British Embassy that he could be sent to immigration detention. The charity instead took him to its Centre of Dreams shelter, where he stayed while staff arranged fundraising and travel documents for his return.

Friso Poldervaart, 34, a Dutch national and BCHF co-founder, said Hill had sometimes suspected the online relationship might be a scam but did not want to accept it because it made him feel cared for.

"He lost essentially his entire pension," Poldervaart said. "Every month when his pension arrived, he would send almost all of it to the scammer. He then could not pay his rent, electricity or buy food, and was eventually evicted from his condo."

Visa problems can compound financial crises

For foreigners in Thailand, the case underlines how a sudden loss of income can quickly cause both housing and immigration difficulties. A visa overstay remains an offence, and those unable to fund onward travel may face detention while arrangements are made.

Hill praised the shelter's staff after initially fearing he would be on the streets. "The conditions on the street are absolutely horrendous," he said. "I was extremely worried I was going to end up there, but it never happened, thank God."

BCHF worked for nearly two months to repatriate him. Hill is now in a homeless shelter in London while waiting to enter assisted living.

Report made to Yannawa police

The scammers are reportedly believed to be in Nigeria, while Hill's money was sent to a Thai mule account. Poldervaart said the case was reported to Yan Nawa District Police and the bank received details of the account, although BCHF was unaware of a wider investigation.

Acting Police Major Loetchai Phiwlongchai, an investigation officer at Yannawa Police Station, said Hill made an official report in July and that it had been recorded as evidence.

"It is unlikely that Mr Hill will get his money back," Poldervaart said.

Very sad to see people still fall for these scams. Loneliness in old age is a terrible thing. I guess the only mistake on his return he should have stopped of in France and got a dinghy back as free housing and pocket money is provided on that route. I wish him well.

Crikey, he looks 88yo and beat up, did he get assaulted?

Looks obese and a bit old to be looking for romance.

Anyway, back to the UK, plenty of chicky babes back there 😂

So if he was in a shelter for 2 months being looked after he would surely get his pension still , so would have 2-3 months pension which he could use to leave and return here if he was allowed by immigration.

True. But his thing between the legs was clearly still very active! The brain went south.

Just like the earth is flat, immigrants are destroying the UK, BREXIT will make things right and Trump is doing amazing things....

And this incredibly good looking woman is interested in me, not my money. 🫪

Sounds legit!

If you read the whole thing... SHE was supposed to come into $3 Million...so I'm wondering who the grifter really is. I know which one the crook is, but as the old saying goes: You can't cheat an honest man.

have this down to an art form !

Not really. It's so obvious in most cases. There English sounds so African/Indian :How many American/British women start their missives with "hello dear". And that's just the first red flag. Stilted, colonial English from a bygone era.

He is 68, not 88.Unless he is suffering from some form of dementia, he should still have his wits about him.

Probably just very lonely and desperate.

Thai women are not impressed by 500 quid anymore. The days of "you farang you have money too much" are over.

I had a few similar requests on SKYPE but there is only one thing to do...report then delete.

You can take the p.. s out of them. I once offered one of them 3000 Riel, and he wanted to know how much that was in dollars. I said it would be dollars without the s.

Yeah but the stupid bit is that he didn't even get any boomboom which he could have had for a better price on Walking Street.

Walking street would be way too expensive for him.

The "COCONUT BAR" more likely.

If a state pension I would have expected it to be higher as it got frozen later than mine. Maybe missed some contributions.

Some thing wrong here. The standard state pension is £241.30 per week. I get more that £500 every two weeks. So unless for some reason he is not on a full pension because of lack of contributions then some thing isn't right.

Also the state pension is not a monthly amount, it is weekly and paid as 13 equal amounts through out the year. I elected to get it paid every two weeks, easier to budget for things.

Some people don't age well. Back in 2010/09 was the time that the Government first announce the increase in pension age. I was 59 at the time and the increase in age was after I would have reached 65. Any way the guy I was was working with who looked at lease 10 years older than me started complaining that he was not going to be able to retire at 65 now. Mind you you should have see how many cigarettes he smoked in a day.

That´s pure stupidity! No excuses!

On the other hand, the guy was living on 500GBP per month. That´s sounds like a bad situation. Assisted living will probably be more suitable.

Sum of it all. Just another in a sick situation!

Stupidity and naivety, simple as that.

Period.

It's pretty sad, and shameful for a once proud country like the UK, that a charity needs to step in because the embassy can't be arsed to lift a finger to offer meaningful assistance.

They should help him get back home, but refuse him a new passport once there, at least until he has paid up for his repatriation. He doesn't seem to be the smartest guy I've ever seen.
